College celebrates wellness at eventTo call attention to the importance of
personal health and safety, Lincoln Trail
College hosted its annual Health
Awareness Day for the public from 10 a.m.
to 1 p.m. Feb. 6 in the LTC gym.
The free event featured booths that
focused on: blood sugar and blood pressure
testing, massage therapy, counseling, hear-
ing, lifting, eye protection, vision and den-
tal care, mental health and stress services,
and more.
Health Awareness Day is presented by
community health care providers and
LTC’s career/technical and health care pro-
grams. Door prizes and giveaways were
awarded during the course of the event.

Doug Beach, the Elmhurst
College Jazz Band and the
Lincoln Trail College Jazz
Band performed Jan. 17 as
part of LTC’s annual Jazz
Day festivities.
Beach is a performer,
publisher, arranger and edu-
cator. He currently serves as
the director of the Elmhurst
College Jazz Band and the
director of jazz studies. His
company, Doug Beach
Music, is a leading publisher
of educational jazz music.
Beach has won awards
for composition from the
American Society of
Composers, Authors, and
Publishers (ASCAP) and, in
1996, the Count Basie
Orchestra and New York
Voices recorded his arrange-
ment of “Cottontail” on a
CD that went on to win the
Grammy Award for best
large jazz ensemble.
The 19-piece Elmhurst
College Jazz Band has
toured 17 nations and twice
been honored with invita-
tions from the U.S. State
Department to tour Europe.
Performances with well-
known guests artists are a
staple to the band’s sched-
ule. Recent artists have
included: Bobby Shew,
Louie Bellson, Pete
Christlieb, Conte Candoli,
Diane Schuur, Terry Gibbs,
Denis DiBlasio, Chris
Vadala and Frank Mantooth.
The group also participates
in a number of jazz festivals
nationwide.

Elmhurst Jazz Band will
conduct master classes and
a clinic for select area high
school and college band stu-
dents.

Score big on the ACT as Lincoln Trail College presents
math and English preparation courses this spring.
Instructor Lisa Maple will lead the English prep class
from 6 to 8:50 p.m. Mondays March 11 through April 15.
The course will help prepare students for the English and
composition portions of the ACT. Course content will
include reviews of: punctuation, grammar and usage, and
sentence structure; writing strategy, organization and style;
and practice ACT-type tests.
Instructor Danielle Zerkle will lead the mathematics
prep class from 6 to 8:50 p.m. Thursdays March 14 through
April 18 in Williams Hall 118. These sessions are designed
to help prepare students for the six math topics covered on
the standardized test: pre-algebra, elementary algebra, inter-
mediate algebra, coordinate geometry, plane geometry, and
trigonometry. Course content will include test-taking strate-
gies with an emphasis on vocabulary, recognition of prob-
lem types, and solution strategies unique to each section.

Several National Safety Council Defensive Driving
courses (DDC-4) will be offered throughout the Illinois
Eastern Community Colleges District during March.
Classes will be offered from 6 to 10 p.m. March 11
at Wabash Valley College Science Building Room 55;
March 13, Frontier Community College Foundation
Hall; March 19, Olney Central College Wattleworth
Hall Room 114; and March 21, Lincoln Trail College
Harry L. Crisp Educational Center Room 106.
The DDC-4 course is a classroom “face-to-face”
course. It is accepted as an assigned driving course as
required for traffic-related court supervision. Some
insurance companies will provide a discount for suc-
cessful completers of this course. Participants success-
fully completing the one-night course will receive a
National Safety Council, DDC-4 Certificate. The cost
for this class is $50. Special rates are available to sen-
ior citizens wishing a refresher on safe driving skills.

fifth annual Admissions and FAFSA
Completion Night from 4 to 7 p.m.
Feb. 21 in Williams Hall.
The free event will give parents
and students an opportunity to get set
for college in a single night. At the
open house event, participants can
complete and submit the Free
Application for Federal Student Aid
(FAFSA) form online, receive schol-
arship information, discuss LTC’s
technical programs with lead instruc-
tors, get assistance completing the
application process for admission to
LTC, and get answers to college-relat-
ed questions.
Participants are asked to bring
student and parent 2012 federal tax
return and W-2s. Visit

College for Kids program on March
23.
College for Kids is a morning of
unique enrichment courses for stu-
dents in grades kindergarten through
six. The classes offer students an
opportunity to use their imaginations
and socialize with students from
other area schools.
