    Baseband processing subsystems cannot be designed in isolation from the environment with which they interact. With this in mind, Xilinx and Wintegra, Inc. have collaborated to optimize the interaction between the Layer-1 and higher layers, which is critical to meeting the stringent end-to-end system latency goals of 3GPP-LTE.

    A message-based application programming interface (API) supports the facilities and procedures defined by the 3GPP-LTE specifications, while shielding developers from the details of low-level IP interface tasks. In common with the rest of the LTE Baseband Targeted Design Platform, the API supports the full range of basestation form factors, bandwidths and frame structures. Initially implemented on a Xilinx Microblaze soft processor, the API is portable to any processing element and is designed to adapt to all common connectivity options.

    Xilinx also works with a select network of systems integrators to accelerate delivery of turnkey products and services as part of the LTE Baseband Targeted Design Platform. In addition to platform expertise, these companies offer value-added IP as well as extensive wireless systems integration and validation experience. All Xilinx baseband processing elements have been designed for use in production systems and tested at the system level using LTE test equipment from Agilent Technologies.

    The LTE Baseband Targeted Design Platform in conjunction with the Xilinx Multi-mode Radio Targeted Design Platform creates an end-to-end LTE basestation design encompassing radio, baseband, media access control (MAC), and transport functions. Together, these modular platforms simplify development and reduce costs for both frequency division duplex (FDD) and time division duplex (TDD) variants of LTE. With a common platform for the design and development of programmable LTE baseband processing and digital front end (DFE) radio subsystems, developers have the flexibility and scalability to meet evolving product and time-to market requirements of next-generation 3G and 4G basestation architectures.

    With easy-to-use graphical user interfaces, developers can configure LTE Baseband Targeted Design Platform LogiCORE IP components to optimize for cost and power regardless of the target basestation configuration. For example, the LTE Turbo Decoder can be generated with either 1, 2, 4 or 8 parallel decode units resulting in resource-optimized implementations across the full range of form factors from femtocell to the most complex macrocell systems. Developers can integrate production-quality LTE baseband functions from Xilinx into existing designs or customize the Xilinx LTE Targeted Reference Designs to leverage their own value-added technology.
