System Information Broadcast in LTE

System information parameters are broadcast to UEs..

• for cell selection and cell re-selection– UE must camp on best cell to be ready for service(s)

• to receive paging information from network– MT call or MT packet session setup initiated by network

– to inform the UE (user) about Tsunami or Earthquake warning (ETWS)

• to access the radio network via UL (DL) common channels– access parameter and access scheme to start a connection

• System Information provides

– Access Stratum information▪ eUTRAN related parameters

• e.g. RRC setup Timers and Constants

– Non – Access Stratum information▪ Core network related parameters

• e.g. Tracking Area Code, MCC, MNC (PLMNId)

• UE shall consider received BCCH information valid for 3h.

System Information Broadcast in LTE

• UE knows where to find Master Information Block

– MIB is broadcast in the Physical Broadcast Channel (PBCH)

– in MIB UE receives basic system information

• On receiption of System Information Block 1

– UE is able to receive scheduling information for all other SIBs

– SIB 2..SIB 7 supported in RL10

– SIB 2..SIB 7 are scheduled on PDSCH similar like other user data or signaling – so UE needs to know where to listen and receive

System Information Structure

• Master Information Block (MIB) Primary System Information

– Sent with high repetition rate for fast aquisition of BCCH

– Most essential parameters to quire System Information

– MIB is broadcast in 1st subframe of 10ms radio frame▪ together with primary and secondary synch channels (P-SCH, S-SCH)

– Broadcast via PBCH physical channel

• System Information Blocks 1 .. N Secondary System Information

– RL10 supports SIB 1,2,3,4,5,6,7

– SIBs with same repetition rate can be mapped into a single SI▪ RL09 and RL10 supports mapping of a single SIB into a SI

– all SI Information is scheduled and broadcast via PDSCH physical channel

• System Information Block 1Information relevant when evaluating if a UE is allowed to access a cell and defines the scheduling of other system information blocks.

• System Information Block 2contains common and shared channel information

• System Information Block 3contains cell re-selection information, mainly related to the serving cell

• System Information Block 4contains information about the serving frequency and intra-frequency neighbouring cells relevant for cell re-selection (including cell re-selection parameters common for a frequency as well as cell specific re-selection parameters)
