CLUB BULLETIN SI POOLE
MARCH 2018
Quiz
Dear ladies, Spring is here—I can see the flowers of my camellias peeping out of the snow drifts as I write! We are coming to the end of the Soroptimist year—financially and of course for our President. Liz has asked members if they can contact her with some memories of her time as Presi-dent—and this is a gentle reminder! Our next club meeting on Monday, 12th March will have a different format as it's Liz last club meeting as President after 2 years and will be combined with whatever we can salvage from the cancelled Teenage Cancer Trust music fund-raiser. The programme for the evening is: Salterns Hotel, Ground Floor Function Room 7pm - welcome from President Liz Performances from Musicthon musicians Fund Raising Auction - Brittany Ferries Travel Voucher Fund Raising Cake Sale - please bring along the cakes baked for the musicthon (Though please note these are not for consumption at the hotel - takeaway only) A celebration of Soroptimist International 2016 to 2018 8pm - Finger buffet supper (only charge is drinks from the bar) 9pm - Any guests depart Quick business meeting for urgent items 9.30pm - Meeting closure I wish I were there with you all—will be in spirit! From Helen
Guests will still be wel-
come to our March meeting— can anyone
who is bringing a guest please let me know.
As Liz says, I'm planning an exciting, informative and
very enjoyable year ahead. Please could everyone
renew their membership by 9 April. As agreed, the
cost is £138 for full membership .
FROM LIZ RODGERS, CLUB PRESIDENT
I've nearly completed my 2 year presidency and the meeting on
the 12th will be my last club meeting as your president so I do
hope that you can come. We have a lovely celebratory 'end of
term' evening in store!
Helen has a great year ahead lined up and Ana's programme
action proposal is really exciting so we can be very confident
going into our 66th year that we'll make a difference to the
lives of women and girls, learn much at our meetings and have
fun doing so.
Now for a personal plea. Once again, my role at Brittany Ferries
is changing plus I'll be spending each Saturday working on my
music in Wiltshire. I've stepped down as Chair of the Purple
Teardrop Campaign Ops Group - please can a volunteer step
up. I shan't have the time to do this role for the foreseeable
future.
With many thanks for this and look forward to seeing everyone
on the 12th. I'll email beforehand with the final detail.
Kate and Liz had the honour of representing SI Poole at Barbara Rockett's
funeral on 22nd February. Barbara's membership of Soroptimist International
began in Swindon and was clearly of great importance to her until she retired
from the Poole club due to ill health.

Purple Teardrop Campaign
Pauline's emailed regarding the brilliant opportunity we have to promote both SI Poole and Purple Teardrop Campaign at the BIC on 14th March.
Thank you to the two members who've volunteered. However, it's not enough woman power for Pauline to be able to confirm to the organisers that we can go ahead. It's a great chance to get both names in front of an audience of approx 400, in fact, we've wanted to have a stand at one of the conferences at the BIC for some time. Please can you get in touch with Pauline . Stand set-up is at 0830 and stand break-down is 1500 so all and any
help you can give between those two times would be super. Thank you.
What have we been up to?
Jackie went to the Annual Lunch of S I Plymouth on Febuary 12th and
took items for their Bissary Project in The Gambia ,

The jumpers were passed on to S I Tiverton , for their local CHAT

Well done Jackie and the knitters!
Our next meeting is courtesy of Mary Cann on April 11th . Marion has
passed Jackie a VERY big bag of knitted squares , so we will have a go
at turning them into blankets . Thanks to Liz's mother-in-law for her
donations .
Book Group Review - February 2018 I always knew Carol’s choice of novel, “Eleanor Oliphant is Completely Fine” by Gail Honeyman (her debut novel) was going to be an interesting read – not only from the title, but the fact that it is displayed in the window of every “Waterstones” and “W H Smith” throughout the kingdom. We in the book group do not appreciate being told what is a “good book”, we like to find out for ourselves! However, it has to be admitted that “Eleanor Oliphant” is an interesting and intriguing novel right from the opening pages. The central character, Eleanor, is a well - drawn character, for whom we develop a sympathy, with more than a few eccentricities, but who amongst us hasn’t eccentric traits? Do you have a favourite mug you prefer to drink from? Do you favour certain clothes from your wardrobe? Would you wonder at your fellow workers being “shirkers and idiots”? Do you talk to plants? Discussion was lively, two hours long with many cups of tea and cakes consumed, but still all the aspects of the novel were not exhausted. Topics such as loneliness, autism, memory loss, child protection, the foster care system, were all discussed. Although not top of our chart, “Eleanor Oliphant is Completely Fine”, it has to be admitted, is a “good book” and can be recommended. Many thanks to Sue for hosting our February gathering. Our next one is at my home on Friday 16
th March at 2.30pm when we will be discussing another novel of the moment, “How to Stop
Time” by Matt Haig. All welcome. Marion
