ALL ABOARD! Alumni Escolarians, welcome to the M/S Philippines Floating Hotel and Restaurant! Come, let’s sail down memory lane and reminisce the good ol’ CEU days. Come, let’s float to the future, envision what the next 100 years will be like for our dear Alma Mater!

The Clarion’s fearless forecast: CEU’s next century will be like the flowers on our Luau costumes: bright and colorful. The days to come will be abundant and sumptuous, like our luau buffet. We will have years of merrymaking, of singing and dancing, yes, like a luau!

Now you know why the CEU Alumni Foundation led by our president, Dr. Paz I. Lucido, thought of Luau as our theme for this year’s Homecoming. We will look at the future with optimism, because we have everything going for us. We have our officers, faculty, personnel, students and their parents, and yes, our alumni—all united in our pursuit to uphold Science

and Virtue—the dream principles of our founders, Dona Librada Avelino and Dona Carmen de Luna. We have our buildings, our state-of-the art facilities, equipment and instruments to be used for our noble purpose. We have the education community which has recognized us as a Center of Education Excellence. We have a country to live for, to bring to First World status as the tide of development

opportunities is shifting from the West to the East.

Yes, it’s an exciting century! So come, let’s party! Welcome home, alumni!

GLOBAL economic crisis, dreadful flu virus, calamities, suicide bombings, massacres-- plus our own personal tribulations. Yes, we experienced the worst in 2009. But it is often said that the darkest hour is just before dawn. And I believe a new dawn has come as we start 2010. Leading economists, business executives, and entrepreneurs say that since we’d been down, there is no way but up. After the meltdown, there will be economic recovery. After the devastation, there will be reconstruction. After the gruesome crimes, justice will eventually prevail. And every trial we faced had a reason which we will later realize was for our own good.

So, whatever it brings, we welcome 2010 with hope and faith and, yes, with rejoicing, for that is the best way, the only way we must look at the days ahead. Our

motif for our Homecoming manifests our optimism. We are having a Luau!

Our Homecoming theme is CEU: 100 Years and Beyond because we are optimistic that our noble institution shall stand the test of time and shall keep alive the vision of our founders, Dona Librada Avelino and Dona Carmen de Luna: that every student who will pass by our pink halls shall emerge a person of Science and Virtue. And today, we will see such persons in our alumni, especially our jubilarians.

Yes, in every successful alumna--or alumnus—we see the fulfilment of our founders’ dream. And through the loyalty and support of our CEU administratrion and alumni, we see that CEU’s next 100 years, and beyond, will always be bright!

A Grand Pink Ball for CEU’s TOP 100ON MAY 30, 2008, Centro Escolar University capped the yearlong celebration of its 100th Founding Anniversary with the Centennial Awards and Pink Ball.

Led by President Ma. Cristina D. Padolina, Escolarians dressed to the nines—yes, in pink!—to honor the top 100 achievers in the university’s first 100 years and then celebrated with the Pink Ball —a grand event like no other.

Here are the pictures of those unforgettable moments....

“I HAVE a feeling she set the tone for the kind of service we now see among our personnel—that of being multitaskers,” she said.

These were the words of CEU President Dr. Ma. Cristina D. Padolina, in her inspirational message, honoring Dr. Concepcion A. Aguila, cited as the most distinguished CEU alumna, during the school’s Loyalty and Service Awards held at the Librada Avelino Auditorioum.

The Loyalty and Service Awards is an annual CEU celebration to honor the birth anniversary of Dr. Aguila, who held many positions in CEU, including Dean of the Graduate School, Moderator of Extracurricular Activit ies, University Legal and Educational Counsel, and Executive Director.

Dr. Padolina added that it’s “fitting to celebrate loyalty and service in honor of one true pink Escolarian,” noting that Dr. Aguila started her romance with CEU as a high school student back when it still held the name Centro Escolar de Senoritas and cont inued to serve the Universi ty until her death at which time she held four posts: Executive Director, Legal Consultant, Dean of the College of Education, and Dean of the Graduate School.

Dr. Padolina then noted the loyalty of Dr. Aguila’s service in the work of the event’s awardees, especially those marking their ruby anniversary at CEU this year: Virgilio R. Apostol, Library Department; Rosalinda Armea, faculty of the Physical Science Department; Rhodora Bautista, also of the Library Department; Soledad Llavore of the Registrar’s Office; Evelyn Vallido of the Registrar’s Office in Makati; Arsenia Villaester of the Office of the Assistant Vice President for Malolos; and Fe Sagun, “my boss.”

Although the awards given that day to CEU’s faithful employees are largely based on years of service, she said that service must be measured more in terms of the quality, the excellence of the service rather than simply in years.

LOYALTY DAY 2009

Tribute to Dr. Concepcion Aguila

Dreamer and Doer

“But then, how do we measure excellence?” she asked. “The true measure of excellence, I wish to suggest, can only be made by the individual upon assessment on whether one has done one’s best and that includes developing oneself to the fullest. In our case as administrators, it is incumbent upon us to bring about the best in others—to provide the necessary

environment, for other students so they can develop and grow to their full potential and for our personnel so that they can give of their best to their task. As a higher education institution we are in the business of bringing out the best in people. We seek excellence in the virtues we wish to inculcate in them.”

Meanwhile, Dr. Cecilia G. Valmonte, former Dean of the School of Arts and Humanities, in her tribute to Dr. Aguila, described her as someone “who exemplifies anyone’s expectation of a truly Loyal Escolarina.” “Yes, hers was a job that one could easily think was too big for a woman her size—barely 5’1. Yet she was certainly big in many ways,” she said.

Dr. Valmonte, who was a student of the Col lege of

Educat ion, of which Dr. Agui la was the Dean, and who served

as Dr. Agui la ’s second secretary, added, “For wi th her great foresight, she was a dreamer…and a doer, as wel l . ”

Dr. Valmonte also shared some of her fondest memories of Dr. Aguila as well as the valuable lessons she learned from her, including her meticulous attention to details, punctuality, and faithfulness to her word.

“May our students, graduates, faculty, and personnel be ever aware of the Light of Inspiration that our

predecessors, like Dr. Concepcion A. Aguila, have left with us all,”

she concluded. The program began with the

introduction of the CEU Administrative Council and the Board of Trustees of the CEU Alumni Foundation.

The highlight, of course, was the awarding of the alumni who served the university for 15 up to 40 years.

President, ELAMS Alumni ChapterTHE CEU Alumni Chapter for Education, Liberal Arts, Music, and Social Work is raring to implement programs for its alumni, students, and the rest of the University in 2010. ON TO gLOBAL COMPETITIvENESS

ELAMS elected its new officers last March 2009 (see picture below). As soon as they sat together to map out their programs for 2010, the new officers at once approved development programs for our faculty and students to be competitive in the global setting.

Social Work held a Lecture-Sharing from a successful United States based alumna.

Cynthia Balenton, a CEU social work graduate now working as a military social worker at the U.S. Navy who came home for a brief vacation, found time to give a lecture for Social Work faculty and students. She inspired them through her sharing of challenging experiences in working with families in crisis.

A social worker from Asia working in a western country is good news; but the practice of social work in a military setting is definitely something that is worth sharing! And CEU was fortunate to have spent inspiring moments of sharing with Miss Balenton, a Social Work alumna we are so proud of!

CARINg FOR OUR OWNAs they planned for the ELAMS projects for 2010, the officers

realized what they need first was to raise funds for whatever they plan to accomplish. And so, taking advantage of the Christmas season, ELAMS held a tiangge on the sidewalk outside the University building. The project, headed by Dr. Lorenzo Hipolito Jr., was so successful that now ELAMS have cash for the following projects:

Scholarship ELAMS will now be able to continue its scholarship program. In the past,

the program benefitted students in Education, Liberal Arts, and Music. This year, it’s the turn of Social Work to enjoy the privilege. A third year Social Work student will be chosen to receive the grant this school year.

Relief for victims of Typhoon Ondoy The ELAMS board approved the release of P5,000 to assist CEU-

SELAMS faculty and staff affected by Typhoon Ondoy.

ON TO THE FUTURE!SELAMS celebrates its 85th year with its theme 85 Years of Glorious

Feats. Our dream is to have more of those feats in the next 85 years and beyond!

Come, enjoy the journey with us to our exciting future!

DINA DE LA PAZ STALDER: BEAUTy EXPERTA BEAUTIFUL, loyal, and steadfast supporter of her Alma Mater. That’s how everyone regard Dina dela Paz, a graduate of CEU, with the degree of Bachelor of Science in Medical Technology in 1985. A true pink Escolarian, Dina is first a happy wife and mother. She is married to Christoper Stalder, a Swiss national, and they have three children—Paul, Diana, and Ma. Kristina. Armed with advanced studies in facial care in Nottingham, England, Dina Stalder is now president and Chief Executive Officer of Stalder Group of Companies.

Her rise to the top didn’t happen overnight. The young CEU alumna started as a compounder for a dermatologist. From there, she went on to work as a medical representative for a while and eventually got promoted to the post of sales supervisor. Then, she went to England where she landed as an inventory clerk at a home for the aged while on the side, she studied facial formulations.

She came back to the Philippines in the late ‘80s and opened the Beauchamps Pharmacy, a skin care specialty drug in 1989 carrying her own products and some over-the-counter products of the companies. With expertise learned from her stint in England, she established the Dermaline Facial Care Center in 1996. Now one of the leading the skin care salons in the country, Dermaline has nine branches located in Acropolis in Libis, Araneta Center in Cubao, Scout Reyes in Roces, Yabut Street in Guadalupe, Ayala Avenue in Makati, Anapolis in Greenhills, President’s Avenue in Parañaque, Paseo de Sta. Rosa in Laguna and in Tanza Cavite.

Three years after Dermaline was established, Stalder then put up the Stalder Laboratories Inc., maker of cosmetics, medicated cream, lotion, toner, bleaching preparations and its signature Dermablend Papaya Orange Skin Whitening Soap.

CEU recognized her outstanding achievements by naming her one of the Top 100 Escolarians during the grand Centennial Awards and Pink Ball held at the Manila Hotel on May 30, 2009.
