Lubrication System
• Lubrication is a process of fixing the friction by applying any agent which maximize the efficiency of moving parts of machines
• Saves Energy and Losses
What does it function?
• Saves Energy and Losses• Acts like cooling medium. The engine piston is
cooled by the lubricant.• It reduces noise between the striking surfaces.• A highly viscous lubricant is more effective in
reducing noise.• Acts as seal joint. Gas leakage is stopped by
the film of lubricant.
Lubrication in Engines
• Parts such as pistons, bearing and chains exhibits direct metal to metal contact.
• Lubrication is required for smooth operation.• To minimize the heat created by the fuel
explosions.
Lubrication Systems
The engine lubrication is classified as:• Petrol Lubrication System• Wet Sump Lubrication System• Dry Sump Lubrication System
Petrol Lubrication System
• The system is used in two stroke engines in which the crankcase is used to charge the cylinder.
• Two to three percent of lubricating oil is added in the petrol tank where it mixes with the petrol tank where it mixes with petrol.
• Mist Lubrication System.
Adisvantages
1. It does not require extra units, the initial cost is reduced.
2. Gum Deposits over piston, piston rings and ports.
3. Corrosion of the bearing.4. Increased running costs.
Wet Sump Lubrication System
• SUMP?• The oil is stored in the Sump.1. Splash System2. Modified Splash System3. Full Pressure
Splash System
• Pump maintains a constant level of lubricants in the troughs.
• Troughs splashes the oil to the require lubricating parts.
Modified Splash• It is used when the bearing loads are higher.• There are nozzles which direct the stream of
the lubricating oil against the sliding parts
Full Pressure• Used in large and heavy duty engines.• Supply of continuous flow of oil that maintains
lubrication at low temperature
Dry Sump Lubrication
• Heavy Duty Engines.• The oil in the sump is circulated and taken out
for filtration, cooling & flows back to sump.
API GRADINGS• SAE 0W, 5W, 10W, 15W, 20W• SAE 30, 40, 50• SAE 10W-30, 5W-30, 15W-50, 10W-40, etc.
• “W” means suitable for wintertime use (cold temperatures)
• “SAE”- Society of Automotive Engineers• “S” - for gasoline engines (S- Spark ignition)• “C” - for diesel engines (C- Compression ignition)
