Recently, a ormer Luce intern

told me that her time at the

Institute was the most memorable

summer o her lie. Another said, “I’ve grown as

a person and become more condent in my conservative

views and values.” Each summer, I look orward to

welcoming a new group o interns to our Virginia

headquarters.

Each year we receive resumes rom young activists

across the country eager to participate in our highly

competitive internship program. These women know

that Luce internships don’t just consist o making coee

and shufing paperwork—it is a lie changing experience

or young women that will open doors to a lietime o involvement in the conservative cause.

In addition to our internship program, Luce oers

many other opportunities each summer or students to

get involved. In June we host our annual Conservative

Leadership Seminar on Capitol Hill eaturing key leaders

like Congresswoman Michele Bachmann. In July and

August we hold mentoring luncheons or high school and

college students rom across the country. And a select

group o student leaders participate in Luce’s intensive

training seminars.

Thank you or supporting the work o the Clare Boothe

Luce Policy Institute. With your help, we will continue to

reach thousands o young women and prepare them or

eective leadership.

The 2011 Conservative Political ActionConerence (CPAC) brought another year o exciting Luce Policy Institute events, drawing

impressive crowds o students and providing aunique opportunity to mentor the next generationo leaders.

The largest and most anticipated Luce event atCPAC was the annual Woman o the Year mentoringluncheon. This year’s award recipient was MichelleDuggar, whose amily is the ocus o the popular cabletelevision show 19 Kids and Counting. Michelle and

her husband Jim Bob decided early in their marriagethat they would have as many children as God sawt. Today—more than 25 years later—the Duggarshave ten boys and nine girls, including two sets o twins. They live in northwest Arkansas and all o thechildren are home schooled.

The Institute chose Mrs. Duggar as Woman o the Year because by allowing the public a look into heramily’s everyday lie, she shows the joy and blessingsthat children bring to a amily and the God-given valueo every lie. The Duggars provide amilies across America a wonderul example to ollow by teachingtheir children key values like serving others, treating

everyone with respect, being scally responsible andrelying on aith to get through dicult times.

Mrs. Duggar graciously and quietly representsmillions o unsung heroine women across America who choose to ocus on motherhood, knowing it isthe most important job they will ever have. She isa bold leader or pro-amily values—someone young women can look to as an example when it comes toputting amily rst and courageously speaking outor what you believe in.

Mrs. Duggar gave a moving testimony to more than200 women students who gathered to hear her

speech, emphasizing theimportance o aith andamily. She encouragedthe women to stand strongin their belies despite theobstacles they may ace indoing so.

In addition to the Womano the Year luncheon, the Institute hostedseveral Great American

Conservative WomenCalendar signings duringCPAC. Calendar ladies S.E.Cupp, Amanda Carpenter, Kate Obenshain, and BayBuchanan all stopped bythe Institute’s booth in the CPAC exhibit hall to meet with students and sign their page in the calendar.

For the second year in a row the Institute co-hosteda unique panel eaturing leading ladies o theconservative movement. The standing-room-onlycrowd o students and CPAC attendees came to hearrom notable women like Congresswoman Michele

Bachmann, Phyllis Schlafy, Cleta Mitchell, and S.E.Cupp. Topics ranged rom marriage and motherhoodto how to be a successul woman leader. It wasone o the most popular panel discussions o theconerence.

The Institute also co-hosted a student event eaturing  Ann Coulter and the hosts o the FOX News late-night show  Red Eye, Greg Guteld and Bill Schulz.Students had the opportunity to ask questions o the well-known guests and let the event energized andencouraged to spread conservative ideas on their

campuses.

“It is such a pleasure to be able to share withpeople that have my same values.”

“The tour of the Reagan Ranch was magnicentand inspiring.”

“The Summit energized me…hearingconservative speakers and being surrounded by

conservatives is motivating and refreshing.”

“This event was a lovely affair. Not only did I

enjoy the speakers, I heartily enjoyed meetingconservative women from all walks of life.”

Above are just a ew o the comments we received romattendees at the 2011 Western Women’s Summit, theInstitute’s annual gathering o conservative women leaderson the West Coast. The Summit took place at the ReaganRanch Center in Santa Barbara, Caliornia, on March 24-26.

The Summit’s theme this year was “Conservative WomenRising: How to Fight or Freedom and Win.” Attendeescame rom across the country and spanned all age groups, but they shared a passion and enthusiasm or deending theconservative principles that make America great.

Speakers at the Summit included conservative lmmaker Ann McElhinney who exposed the hypocrisy o extremeenvironmentalists; Egyptian-born Nonie Darwish who gavea timely talk on how Islamic extremism in the Middle East iscreeping into American culture; Tea Party Patriots NationalCoordinator Keli Carender who shared how she organizedthe country’s rst Tea Party rally which soon blossomed intoa national movement; and author S.E. Cupp who discussedher latest book about the media’s bias against the Christianaith.

The Summit’s keynote luncheon speaker was the reigningMiss America Teresa Scanlan. Teresa won the pageant in

January at only 17, becoming one o the youngest ever to win the title o Miss America. Not only is Teresa lovely andarticulate, but she has deeply held conservative belies onkey issues which are anchored by her Christian aith. Shegave a compelling talk to the Summit attendees, saying she

was inspired by her grandparents’ escape to the United Statesater suering under communism in Croatia. You can watch

video o her entire talk—and all the Summit speeches—onthe Institute’s website at cblpi.org/video.

The Summit included a tour o President Ronald Reagan’sormer ranch home in the hills o Santa Barbara. Otenreerred to as the “Western White House,” President Reaganspent many days at his beloved ranch during his presidency.

Preserved with the originalurnishings and décor used by theReagans, the ranch is a truly uniqueexperience that gives visitors a lookinto the character and lie o oneo America’s great conservativeleaders.

As the home o conservative women leaders, the Luce Policy Institute is proud that many o the

strongest voices opposing the liberal agenda are coming rom conservative women. This includes

Luce campus lecturers who are making appearances at campuses across the country—rom ArizonaState University to James Madison University in Virginia—to speak out against big government

policies and promote conservative ideas.

Students aren’t likely to hear a conservative perspective rom their liberal proessors or at university-

sponsored lectures, so hosting a Luce Institute speaker remains one o the most eective ways to

create an ideological balance on campus. I you would like to nd out how to host one o the ladies in
