The '08 sailing season is just around the corner. Hope you plan to get down to the club and out on the water as often as you can this year. With that in mind, here's an update on what’s happening around the club: - March work parties are dead ahead. Rear Commodore Kevin Johnson outlines work opportunities in another section of this issue of the Luff Letter. - More than 30 members have attended our two Race Man- agement seminars held Feb. 9 and 23 as the club attempts to provide better and more consistent races throughout the year. Those of you who enjoy running races and the like, you can work off some or all of your work hours for the year with RC duty. Just step up and tell 1st Vice Commodore Eric Nicholls of your interest. - Regattas and social events are on the calendar. First is the annual Commissioning Party Saturday April 19. Tune-up races for the high water season will follow on Sunday, April 20. Rocky Top Invitational Regatta for auxiliaries is a week later, April 26-27. The Admiral Farragut follows and we hope to have a Dutch Treat with multiple classes this year. - Racing, the low water season is currently underway and will continue until April 13, so there is plenty of time to get in- volved, either by skippering your own boat or crewing with someone else. The Sunday races begin at 1:30. Show up about 12:30 if you want to catch a ride. - Learn to Sail classes are being planned for the spring, sum- mer and fall. Details will be forthcoming. The Training Fleet is adding a couple of Sunfish to its inventory and sails for the JYs are being refurbished for the upcoming high school, col- lege, and educational programs, as well as Sail Camp. March 2008 No. 437 2

Forty CYC members attended Race Committee Orientation on February 9th and 23rd and are ready for duty. The race duty assignments for the 2008 season have been finalized and are pub-lished in this issue. Please find your name and mark your calendar or program your computer.

The rules are: 1) Each member is required to serve on a race committee at least once. Failure to fulfill that obligation will cost you $50. Please let me know now if you do not intend to perform race duty. Exchanges may be made freely, but both Principal Race Officers (PRO) must be notified of the rearrangement. 2) Only additional race committee duty can be credited as work hours.

Consider the following regarding race duty.

The PRO should contact the other race committee members at least a week before race day. A full crew is needed to achieve the objective of giving racers fair and safe competition. The objective is lost if races are can-celled due to no-shows. Also, on “heavy” weather days it is essential to have a full committee for safety and to manage the faster pace of the race.

If the PRO does not contact you, then you call them.

Discuss your preferences, strengths and weakness with the PRO so skills and experiences can be matched to the job: Mark Setter and Course Safety, Signaler, Sounder, Spotter, Recorder, and Timer.

Decide on the power boat drivers. The operator of the committee boat and the mark setting/safety boat each need to be reasonably proficient. Operators younger than 19 require a Boating Education Certificate issued by TWRA. Remember, having fuel is a race committee responsibility.

Arrive at least an hour before the start time and agree on a meeting place. It will save time looking for someone you don’t recognize.

Review section K. Race Committee Instructions and section L. CYC Racing Instructions, in the CYC member handbook so you are prepared for race day.

Do not bring alcohol aboard the committee boats. The time to relax is after the races are over, the course is cleared, equipment is secured, and the final horn is sounded.

Let me know if any of the race equipment is not working properly or is missing.

Eric Nicholls - First Vice Commodore [email protected]

I will also need the help of some good kitchen staff as I will be providing those yummy burgers.  I will give work hours to folks who help with the lunch shopping, prep and clean‐up. This is your big moment, sailors.  Remember there is a minimum of 15 required work hours every year.  Most of you put in at least 15 every month and I really appreciate it.  It’s a great time to meet others in the club and fellowship in a nautical way.  And…I don’t want to hear any belly aching in November!

March Work Parties March 1st, March 8th,

March 15th, March 22nd, & March 29th

Well, here we are again.  It’s getting springer all the time.  And the club is in need of a little fixing up.

Those famous work parties are going to take place every dry Saturday in March.  There will be the usual cleaning, trimming, and picking up.  And there will be some bigger pro‐jects too.  Bring all the tools you know how to use for gardening, carpentry, electrical, painting, plumbing, etc.   We’ll need rakes, chainsaws, hammers, screwdrivers, drills, circular saws, paint rollers, single edge razor blades, wheel barrows, shovels, tape measures, pipe wrenches and high powered rifles.  Plus anything else you can think of. Here is a short list of some of this year’s projects.  We are not limited to these, so if there is something around the club you think needs some work, let me know and we might tackle that too.

We look forward to seeing all of you out at the club at the work parties getting the club ready for the 2008 sailing (and social) season. There are plenty of work hour opportunities to get the club ready for the season that do not entail hammering and heavy lifting. Gardens need tending, windows need wash-ing, walls need scrubbing (and maybe even painted) and those picnic tables need sanding, small repair, paint and some TLC.

Don’t forget however that helping out at one social event gets you almost half of your work hours and you get to meet fellow sailors and have FUN!! Please sign up to help at one or more of the work parties, and of course help out at a social event too!

Contact one of us for social event ideas, comments and to sign up! [email protected] Thanks to all of you who have contributed so far… 2008 should be fun!

Thanks! Ann, MaryLeslie & Rhonda

FOUR AREA TEAMS GO TO GOLD Four of our five high school area teams have been invited to compete in the north points Gold Regatta scheduled for March 15-16 at the Lake Norman Yacht Club. The Gold Regatta features the best eight teams from the Inland Lake region and the best eight teams from the Coastal region.

The six top teams in the Gold Regatta will then go to the SAISA Dis-trict Champs in April against the six best south points teams and the two top Caribbean teams. The north half of SAISA embraces some 41 teams from the Carolinas, Georgia, North Florida, and Tennessee.

1. Lake Norman, 2. Farragut, 3. Webb, 4. North Mecklenburg 5. Forsyth Country Day, 6. Oak Ridge, 7. Chapel Hill, 8. Bearden

Congratulations Farragut, Webb, Oak Ridge, and Bearden. Good luck in the Gold qualifier!

UT Sailing Club After a fairly uneventful winter, UT Sailing is picking up speed and looking

forward to warm weather and a raising water level. Over the winter break, 8 JY15 mainsails were restored by Sail-Care and will be put to use in UT’s upcoming home regatta on March 1st. If you would like to come out and support the Vols sailing team, races will start at 10:00 AM and end around 4:00 PM.

The infamous Tennessee Sailing Spring Break trip is just around the corner and I know we can’t wait to enjoy the wind and sun of Key West, FL. We will depart from Punta Gorda, FL on March 15, sail to Key West for a week of fun in the sun and return on the 22nd. This year’s flotilla includes an Island Spirit 401, Lagoon 380, Gemini 105 Mc, and a Catalina 320. New CYC Commodore, R.G. Smithson and long time CYC member, Wayne Cutler, will be skippering boats as well as UT Sailing Club members Alex Stein and Chris Smith.

Four UT Sailors, Adam Bonomo, Andrew Jones, Matthew Wickman and Stuart Johnson, will be working to com-plete their US Sailing Level 1 Certification on May 8th – 11th in Charleston, SC. The course will be taught by Collin Bentley, coach for the College of Charleston racing team. If you see any of these guys around the club, be sure to wish them luck.

If you are looking for crew for any regatta, please send an email to [email protected] and we will see about getting some young whippersnappers onto your boat.

Fair winds and following seas.

Ahoy! . . (nautical salutation) Considered by some authorities to have been an ancient Viking battle cry, the interjection is now commonly used to hail a ship. Alexander Graham Bell suggested Ahoy! As the appropriate salutation for answering the telephone. Although his recommendation was not accepted by society at large, the offshoots Hi!, Ho!, and Yo! have crept into colloquial English. From historical fiction to the music hall. Victorian writ-ers used nautical Yo-ho’s to add atmosphere and salt to their characters and skits. Operettas by Sir William S. Gilbert and Sir Author Sulli-van are liberally sprinkled with such derivatives. The well-known refrain from The Mikado is a case in point: But the happiest hour a sailor sees Is when he’s down At an inland town, With his Nancy on his knee, yo ho! And his arm around her waist!
