Congregational News

May 2012

Dear friends

Recently I heard of the story of the old woman who made and sold artificial fruit. She took great pains to make all the items that were on her market stall as life like as possible. One day a couple of tourists came along looking at the various wares on sale at the fair. They stopped at the old woman’s table, looked at an apple she had in her hand and said – ‘that’s too red for an apple’. To which she raised it to her mouth and took a bite. That apple was for real!

Today, radio and TV often report surveys of large numbers of people claiming that they have religious thoughts. Documentaries on the world faiths and their histories abound. Self help books that focus on our spiritual awareness fill yards of bookshop shelving. Yet unless you take a bite at real belief then you will never know how refreshing it tastes. That is surely the message we as Christians must take out from our Church walls. For we can spend ages discussing how to make our congregations more welcoming, our worship more relevant and our music more accessible yet ultimately we must provoke the response to dive in. And that will only happen when we can demonstrate that we, as Christians, have something others do not.

So this post-Easter time, let’s strive on showing what it means to be children of God, inheritors of the way to life in all its fullness and the benefactors of the gift of being eternal.

Since that’s what will persuade even the most cynical doubter that we have in our hands not a waxen image of perfection but Christ’s fruit whose flavour is just so good.

With every blessing

Graham

Good News

CONGRATULATIONS to Mr and Mrs Bates who have become members of St Luke’s and Queen Street church

BIRTHDAY CONGRATULATIONS to Aileen Adamson and all other members of our congregation who celebrated an April birthday.

CONGRATULATIONS to our Guild for the delightful afternoon tea with the Carnoustie Traditionals. The music, songs, recitations, anecdotes and jokes were much appreciated. The £212 raised for guild funds was not astronomical but everyone had a great time and many expressed a desire to return for a similar event in the future.

CONGRATULATIONS to the Worship group for their input to the beautiful and meaningful Easter services. I was at the door with Irene Butler gathering in hymn books and we were delighted by the large number of favourable comments about various aspects of the service.

WELL DONE to the children who attended the 11 o’clock Easter service. Their behaviour was impeccable and they were obviously enthralled by the anthems.

GOOD NEWS Our church is organising a Flower Festival in conjunction with other churches to benefit Christian Aid. This will occur in Christian Aid week on Thursday, Friday and Saturday culminating in a concert on Saturday, 19th May.

CONGRATULATIONS Margaret and Jim McLuskie on your Golden Wedding Anniversary.

CONGRATULATIONS to Judith Richmond who is a member of the Carnoustie and District Youth Brass Band. The band members, competing at the Royal Northern College of Music in Manchester, retained their title of British Youth Champions.

Church ladies   with typewriters

They're  Back! Those wonderful Church Bulletins! Thank God for church ladies with typewriters. These sentences (with all the BLOOPERS & TYPOS) actually appeared in church bulletins or were announced in church services:

The Fasting & Prayer Conference includes meals. --------------------------  The  sermon this morning: 'Jesus Walks on the Water.' The sermon tonight:  'Searching for Jesus.' --------------------------  Ladies,  don't forget the rummage sale. It's a chance to get rid of those things not worth keeping around the house. Bring your husbands. --------------------------  Miss  Charlene Mason sang 'I will not pass this way again,' giving obvious pleasure to the congregation. --------------------------  For  those of you who have children and don't know it, we have a nursery downstairs. --------------------------  Next  Thursday there will be tryouts for the choir. They need all the help they can get. --------------------------  Irving Benson and Jessie Carter were married on October 24 in the church. So ends a friendship that began in their school days. --------------------------  A bean supper will be held on Tuesday evening in the church hall. Music will follow. --------------------------  At the  evening service tonight, the sermon topic will be 'What Is Hell?' Come early and listen to our choir practice. --------------------------  Eight new choir robes are currently needed due to the addition of several new members and to the deterioration of some older ones.  -------------------------- Please place your donation in the envelope along with the deceased person you want remembered. --------------------------  The  church will host an evening of fine dining, super entertainment and gracious hostility. --------------------------  Potluck  supper Sunday at 5:00 PM - prayer and medication to follow.  --------------------------  The  ladies of the Church have cast off clothing of every

kind. They may be seen in the basement on Friday afternoon. --------------------------  The  pastor would appreciate it if the ladies of the Congregation would lend him their electric girdles for the pancake breakfast next  Sunday. --------------------------  Low Self Esteem Support Group will meet Thursday at 7 PM. Please use the back door.  --------------------------  The  eighth-graders will be presenting Shakespeare's Hamlet in the Church basement Friday at 7 PM. The congregation is invited to attend this tragedy. --------------------------  Weight  Watchers will meet at 7 PM at the First Presbyterian Church. Please use large double door at the side entrance.
