Toronto in the summertime is one of the best places in the world to hear excellent and incredibly diverse live music. With so many festivals, special events and free outdoor concerts, there are many new musical treasures to discover. During our recent Lulaworld festival we were thrilled to hear how many people travelled from other parts of the province, and even from other countries to enjoy the concerts. We urge music-loving Torontonians to support their local live music scene by inviting out-of-town friends and family to visit and experience everything our city has to offer.

Lula’s summer series has something for everyone from salsa, samba, forro and soukous to hip hop, jazz, classical and funk. Where else are you going to find opera, wrestling, spoken word, Cuban son and world cup parties under the same roof?

CBC Radio host Julie Nesrallah and internationally-renowned tenor Richard Troxell star bring us the power and virtuosity of Georges Bizet’s famous opera, Carmen. The production takes the form of sexy, hip and ground-breaking dinner theatre where the incredible drama of Carmen on Tap unfolds around the audience as they enjoy dinner or cocktails in Lula’s intimate setting.

This summer, Carmen on Tap debuts at both the Stratford Festival and Lula before heading to the Prince Edward County Music Festival in September.

For the past few years, Lula has kicked off each weekend with an after work jazz or world music concert. Featured artists have included Hilario Duran, Dominic Mancuso, Jane Bunnett, Michael Occhipinti, Alexis Baro, Quique Escamilla and many more. We’ve had the pleasure of seeing several new projects, such as that of bassist Yoser Rodriguez, develop as a result of the series.

Our Friday World Jazz series continues to highlight emerging artists as well as new projects by established musicians. Our aim is to create an opportunity for Latin, jazz and world artists to present their latest work to audiences eager to listen and to share in the incredible music being created in our city.

We’re pleased to announce that throughout the summer admission to the concerts will be free before 8pm. The earlier 7:30 performance start time makes it easy to join us after work to enjoy cocktails or dinner. Admission includes the salsa lesson at 9:30 and live salsa band at 10:30. For the summer months we are offering a $39 Friday dinner special which includes choice of appetizer, main course, dessert and all the entertainment for the night.

Vocalists Laura Fernandez, Josefina Torres, Eliana Cuevas and Laura Cole, (who recently recorded with Daniel Lanois), as well as trumpeter Alexander Brown and guitarist Roland Hunter are just a few of the artists included in the free summer series. We’ve also invited internationally celebrated Cuban Canadian pianist Hilario Duran to give a repeat performance of the beautiful solo piano concert that was included earlier this year as part of our Lulaworld festival.

Lula keeps the music going all summer long, from classical to funk, from Cuba to Zimbabwe!

Our resident classical band euphonia returns for their monthly Monday on July 14 and for the first time we’ll host a production of the opera Carmen, directed by CBC Radio host Julie Nesrallah for a four night run starting August 24. On the other end of the musical spectrum, our Sweet Trifecta series continues on July 3 and 31 with Chug Bucket, Thunder Funk and Yasgur’s Farm.

A mini-world music series kicks off June 25 with the launch of guitar-ist Wagner Petrilli’s long-awaited first solo CD and continues with a Mexican, Cuban & funk triple bill on July 3. Legendary son group El Conjunto Chapottin y sus Estrellas (direct from Cuba) appears on July 4 and El Gremio (salsa from Chile) touches down July 5. We’re especial-ly pleased to host the spectacular, touring Zimbabwean group Ma-koomba, presented by Small World Music, on July 8. On July 24, two of our favourite Brazilian groups, Tio Chorinho and Aline Morales’ Forro Band return to the Lula stage.

If you’re looking to improve the world while having a great time, join us for a fundraiser in support of anti-war efforts in the Ukraine (July 16), the Gerlandina Orphanage in Tanzania (July 20) or the Humber River Hospital (July 30).

Ambassadors of Lula’s vibrant salsa scene, Lula All Stars features the city’s top Latin vocalists backed by cream-of-the crop musicians. Many members also lead their own projects, each bringing a unique style to create a Canadian salsa supergroup. Showcasing original compositions, many of which are found on the Lula Lounge Essential Tracks CD, this salsa dream team includes such luminaries as Roberto Linares Brown, Luisito Orbegoso, Yani Borrell & Ricky Franco.
