Fleets that are owned and operated by you. A fleet can be anything from 1 small van to 300 hundred vehicles that are a mixture of small cars, vans, trucks and buses.

Vehicles that you do not own, BUT, are used by you or your employees in the course of your business. Do you have any of these vehicles?

What the law says:

The Health and Safety at Work Act 1974 specifically states that you must have a safe system at work in place to protect ANYONE who drives for your

business.

Sustainable Transport.

Whats behind the Eco revolution?

The recognition that we need to take care of our planetThe need to have cleaner air, less pollution and a healthier environment for us, our kids and future generations.

Technology advancements are now at a pace never seen before, in the last 6 months, battery technology has moved further forwards than it has done in the last 60 years.

Sustainable Transport Fleet.

Considerations:

Is your fleet fit for purpose?

Are the vehicles the right size and composition

Do you use any forms of technology to monitor how the vehicles are used

If you are considering switching to alternative fuels, have you structured a plan? Does it include retraining of drivers, how servicing will be undertaken

If you have not, whats stopping you?

Sustainable Transport Systems.

Having Technology solutions is good but not the starting point

80% of business organisations do not have a transport policy that includes driving for work

Ensure that your policy has all the key elements including things like, when a vehicle can be used, when it cant be used, how it is to be driven, use of phones, laptops, wearable devices.

Your technology needs to be fit for purpose and meet your business needs

It should include reporting that you want, not what the technology company wants to sell you.

Its YOUR DATA and that of your employees

What can it do for you?

Sustainable Transport Alternative Transport

There are a number of alternative transport methods that you can access to support your staff and reduce your environmental footprint.

Cycling – there are a number of cycling schemes that are supported by Government Grant Aid.

Walking – Is not only really healthy and helps you improve your employees overall fitness, it’s the most carbon friendly transport method.

Car Sharing Schemes can be set up easily and could include other business organisations if you work on a multi occupancy site.

Public Transport – If some form of transport is needed, then first options should always include public transport

Lancashire County Council Transport Plan 2011 – 2021What we will do

Work with bus and rail operators to invest in new public transport services, includingnew bus routes, stations, and greater capacity, where there is a proven economic orregeneration benefit.

Work with coach, bus, taxi and rail operators to press for clean, well maintained andwell lit vehicles, stops and interchanges with staff that are respectful of differentpeople's needs, local services to run to schedule and local bus and rail services tobe timetabled to connect with principal services to major destinations.Provide discount schemes for young people aged 16 – 23.

Work with operators to introduce a new SmartCard technology which will:be usable across all service providers, at first across Lancashire, and in futurethroughout the United Kingdom; cover multiple forms of transport, including bus, rail and cycle hire; be used to deliver a fare structure that provides value for money including journeys with more than one operator and journeys across local authority boundaries.

Develop local rail services to achieve further growth in patronage through partnershipworking with the rail industry and local communities. We will seek targeted investment,at locations where there is evidence of potential for significant growth in the use of railtransport; measures will include new or more frequent services, greater capacity, newstations and improved quality of stations and trains.

Provide safe and convenient new infrastructure for walking and cycling where it willreduce reliance on private car journeys between home and work, schools, and leisureactivities, and particularly along congested routes, and improve opportunities for regularexercise.

Greater Manchester have announced plans to spend £1.5 Billion introducing over 1000 miles of walking and cycleways in the next 10 years, including areas where people will

get priority over vehicles.
