Honoring Our Heroes Essay Contest

Thank you to the students who participated in the Honoring Our Heroes essay

writing contest. They turned in wonderful entries! All the students who

participated from Haw Creek received special recognition on the morning news

and an Award of Excellence Certificate.

The following students are Haw Creek Elementary School winners and will

have their essay go on to the Forsyth County Council Honoring Our Hero’s

reception and published in their book:

Six Flags Read to Succeed Reading Program

Haw Creek Elementary School is once again participating in the Six

Flags Read to Succeed Reading Program. This opportunity is

available for students in Kindergarten through 5th Grade. We are very

excited about this reading program!

To participate in the program, students will need to complete a total of

6 hours (360 minutes) of reading for fun and record these reading

amounts, along with their parent’s signature, on the tally sheet.

Reading logs are due by February 16th.

Students will receive a free Six Flags Ticket for their tremendous

reading efforts! Good luck, and get busy reading!

Haw Creek Get Green and Grind out Cancer!

Students and staff will wear GREEN clothing on February 16th as we

raise awareness for various cancers. We will be presenting the

top grade levels with a ribbon of that month’s color to hang by the

hallway entrance.

Nominating Committee Members Needed

The Haw Creek PTA is looking for FIVE PTA members who are

willing to serve on the Nominating Committee. The Nominating

Committee works together to nominate a slate of officers to be

voted on in April to serve for the 2012-2013 school year. Want

to serve on the Nominating Committee? Email us at

The Nominating Committee’s job is to fill PTA Officer Positions

for next school year. They will be looking for a President, 4

Vice-Presidents, Treasurer, Secretary, and Parliamentarian. If

you are interested in serving, or want to learn more about any

of the positions, please email hawcreekpta@yahoo.com.

Haw Creek Elementary uses three online resources to support individual

students’ learning needs in the content areas. Study Island(1-5), IXL Math(K-5),

and RAZ-Kids(K-5) are the resources we use. These resources are aligned to

Georgia state standards. Your children have used these programs during

computer specials. To access these programs from home you can use the grade

level links on Clicks for the Classroom from the right side of Haw Creek’s main

page. Your child’s personal log in information should have come home earlier in

the school year. Contact your child’s homeroom teacher or Mrs. Paoletti if you

need a copy of your child’s log in information. Please encourage your children to

use these engaging subscription based programs at home. These programs

provide a great review for all children and are excellent practice for the CRCT for

children in grades 3-5.

New Playground Equipment Coming Soon!

Thanks to the generosity of Haw Creek parents and teachers during this year’s Fundraising and Membership Campaign, as well as the diligent work of our Chairpersons to stay within budget on their endeavors, we were able to provide Haw Creek Elementary with a fantastic, custom-made piece of playground equipment. What a great addition to our playground for all of our children to enjoy!

Don’t Forget to RSVP for the Father Daughter Dance!

The 3rd Annual Father Daughter Dance will be held on Saturday, February 25th from

6:00-8:30pm at Haw Creek. This year, our theme is "Hollywood Nights." We are

looking forward to seeing all of Haw Creek's girls and their dads or escorts for the

evening. Invitations were sent home last week. The deadline to RSVP is February

17th. As in the past, we will have a professional photographer available for photos.

5th Grade Committee Update

Hey 5th Grade Parents! We hope you have all received the flyers that came

home last Friday about the 5th Grade Movie Day coming up on Friday,

February 17th at 9:00am at Movies 400. We’ll be watching Journey 2: The

Mysterious Island in 3-D. The cost is $8.00 per student. Please plan to

drop-off your child at 9:00am. This event is for 5th grade students only. No

parents or siblings please. If your child would like to purchase something

from the concession stand, they will have about 30 minutes to do this prior to

the start of the movie. NO CONCESSIONS are included in the price of the

ticket. We will start the movie at approximately 9:30am and it has a run time

of 94 minutes. Therefore, you need to plan to be back to pick-up your child

around 11:00am in the lobby. The DEADLINE to sign-up is Friday, February

10th.

Don’t Throw Out Your Old Phone Books!

Save them for the classroom contest where we will be collecting old phone books to

be recycled. The contest will be held March 19-23. There will be bins placed at the

front of the school and near the bus entrance for the kids to drop off their

phonebooks. Be sure to write the name of the child’s homeroom on the cover of the

phonebook! The class with the overall most phonebooks turned in wins a movie

and popcorn party!

Last year Haw Creek won 1st prize from Keep Forsyth Beautiful for collecting over

700 phone books! It won Haw Creek a $100 prize!

For your convenience at Haw Creek Elementary, we will be taking appointments for Kindergarten Registration. Please stop by the front office or call 678-965-5070 Ext. 421000 to make your appointment. Parents/Guardians may complete the Pre-Registration application online @ www.forsyth.k12.ga.us prior to attending kindergarten registration. THIS IS A PRE-REGISTRATION PROCESS ONLY. You still have to come to Haw Creek to register your child. Please bring required documents (found on the website) to your child’s appointment. Your child doesn’t need to be present to register.

*Walk-ins are welcomed, but will be taken before or after appointments.
