Greetings Eglin Family, This 2015-2016 school year has proven itself to be a year full of positive and exciting changes! We were happy to have Mrs. Thompson to our team. She joined us from Longwood Elementary. It is hard to believe that the year is quickly coming to a close. The fourth grade teachers feel especially proud as we reflect on this past school year. Our students were given the task of meeting the goals of rigorous and challenging academic standards in Language Arts, Math, Science and Social Studies. We began the school year, setting goals which included increasing individual and classroom reading (Accelerated Reading) and preparing our students for the FSA Writing Assessment, Reading Assessment and Math Assessment. We are anxiously awaiting the results of the Writing, Reading and Math Assessment which are expected to come out soon. Summer is quickly approaching and our fourth grade students are ready to spread their Eglin Eagle wings and soar to new heights with their next academic family. Although Mrs. Jones-Urena, Mrs. Thompson, Mrs. Whiting- Cobb, and I will miss our students dearly, we feel assured that they are prepared to meet future academic challenges with the skills, rigor and confidence they demonstrated over the past nine months. We bid you a hearty farewell. We wish you a wonderful and safe summer. We extend an invitation to you to come and visit us during the 2016-2017 school year. Greetings Eglin Family,

verification for the excused absence in that time frame.

Safety First! Parents, Please use the car rider ramp and the parking area in front of the school for dropping off and picking up your students. We have staff at these locations to supervise the safe drop- off/pick-up of ALL students. Cars are not allowed to use the areas behind the school for dropping off or picking up as this is a safety concern! We do not have staff in these locations to supervise and to ensure that your students are safe. Please help us make this part of our day as safe as possible. Thank-you for your cooperation in this matter. Mr. Dennis SamacPrincipal

Research shows that the average child can regress 3-4 months worth of

learning over summer break. That doesn’t have to happen. Below are

some tips to keep your student in tip-top shape over the summer:

1. Read!2. Write often!3. Practice math facts!4. Turn off the television

and video games, and go explore the world!

Music classes include experiences with singing, playing instruments, moving, listening and creating. The musical concepts that are studied include rhythm, melody, harmony, form, expressive qualities and style. Children will experience traditional American folk songs in addition to a variety of world music, and pieces in many styles. Lessons will lead toward note reading and music literacy.

Music lessons are fast-paced and fun, and students will need to wear comfortable clothing in order to participate fully. Primary students do a lot of moving in order to internalize the steady beat and the intermediate students will need to sit on the floor to perform on the mallet percussion instruments.May: Song of the Month: God Bless AmericaComposer: 1950-1990’s musicUnit: Form- musical selections with sectionsAsk your student what they are doing in Music Class!

P.E.  Notes Tennis shoes are required each day for P.E.. Some students are stilling wearing flip flops to P.E. Flip flops are not safe for any P.E. activities. Students will need to have jackets during the cooler weather as P.E. activities are held outside. Please remind your child to wear the proper attire to P.E. for both their safety and their comfort. Parents are always welcomed and encouraged to come out and participate during your child’s designated P.E. time!

Change for ChildrenEglin students participated in the Change for Children in Crisis campaign to benefit children who are in need. They donated $1, 143.14 in change to help these children. Way to go students!!

Eglin kindergartners and first graders had a great time during their Field Day on May 10. Class Spirit was evident when 2nd, 3rd, and 4th graders took to the field on May 11th.

Coaches will be selling Freeze Pops for 50 cents each on Fridays. Proceeds will go to purchase fitness equipment for the gym.

Piñatas!Ms. Harrington’s third grade class recently completed a Social Studies unit on Canada, Mexico, and the Caribbean. Students then did a research project on cultural items, and they chose Mexico as their area of focus. Students were surprised to find out that the piñata may have originated in China and that in the 16 th

century, Spanish missionaries used piñatas to teach the people about Christianity. The study culminated in each student creating their own colorful piñata.

Pictured here: Ms. Harrington’s class shows off the colorful piñatas they made as a class project.

Lemonade Stand

Lemonade Stand Mrs. Charlotte Johnson’s 2nd

grade class has been engaged in reading a story called Lemonade for Sale by Stuart J. Murphy. The story is about a group of children who problem solve to come up with solutions as to how they are going to repair their clubhouse. They decide to sell lemonade to raise the much needed funds. Mrs. Johnson’s students enjoyed the story so much that they decided to run their own lemonade stand. Their learning has gone across the curriculum as they have worked with phonics, language, and writing and even math skills such as tally marks, graphing, and money. The children really got into character with their name tags, hats, and aprons.

Out of Field Teachers:In compliance with Section 101.42 Florida Statues, the following teachers, Mrs. June

Whiting-Cobb, Ms. Vaneesa Harrington, Mrs. Jones-Urena, Mrs. Heather Pinckard, and Mrs. Carol Kotulan are out of field because they do not have an ESOL endorsement, and they

have an ESOL child in their classroom. They all hold a valid teaching certificate issued by the State of Florida and are working on courses to

satisfy the requirements for an ESOL endorsement.

Mrs. Anderson’s first grade class presented a living wax museum to their families on May 20th.

Each student researched a famous person and learned facts about them and then they prepared a costume to represent their famous person. When

their families came into the classroom, the students were scattered around the room with their heads

bowed. When a round sticker on their shoulder or hand was pressed, each wax figure came to life and told about his or her life. They all did a fabulous

job!!! It was amazing!!!

Pete the Cat Goes to the Beach Kindergarten play

Eglin students, faculty, and staff enjoyed their last school performance of the year on May 26, with Kindergarten’s Pete the Cat Goes to the Beach play. The music was by various artists, and Mrs. Sandy Day wrote the script and directed the play. During the play, a beach ball routine was performed that taught students the beat form, a scarves routine was used to teach the melody, and a seashells routine taught matching pitch. It was a wonderful play and a great ending to the school year!!

On May 6, Eglin fourth graders traveled to Tallahassee to explore the state capital of Florida

following a unit of study. They visited the governor’s mansion, the Florida Museum of

Natural History, and both the old and the new capitol buildings. Pictured below is Mrs.

Thompson’s class in front of the new capitol building.
