CONFESSION AND FORGIVENESS

P Blessed be the holy Trinity, ☩ one God, who stretches out the heavens, who sends

light to the nations, who gives breath to us all. C Amen.

P Let us confess our sin in the presence of God and of one another.

P Loving God, C we confess that we have turned from your way to follow our own ways. Forgive us for the times we have spoken or acted too quickly; we have not spoken or acted at all; we have hurt those closest to us; we have hurt those we have yet to know; we have thought more about ourselves than others; we have thought less of ourselves than we ought. Turn us around, and give us a fresh start, so that we can live again as your children. Amen.

P Even when we have done wrong, God makes us right. Even when we have messed up, God puts us together. God’s love never runs out. God never tires of calling us beloved children. Hear God say to you now: Your sins are forgiven, for the sake

of ☩ Jesus Christ our Savior.

C Amen.

FIRST READING Deuteronomy 10:12-22

A A reading from Deuteronomy

12So now, O Israel, what does the LORD your God require of you? Only to fear the LORD

your God, to walk in all his ways, to love him, to serve the LORD your God with all your heart and with all your soul,

13and to keep the commandments of the LORD your God and

his decrees that I am commanding you today, for your own well-being. 14

Although heaven and the heaven of heavens belong to the LORD your God, the earth with all that is in it,

15yet the LORD set his heart in love on your ancestors alone and chose you, their

descendants after them, out of all the peoples, as it is today. 16

Circumcise, then, the foreskin of your heart, and do not be stubborn any longer.

17For the LORD your God is

God of gods and LORD of lords, the great God, mighty and awesome, who is not partial and takes no bribe,

18who executes justice for the orphan and the widow, and who loves

the strangers, providing them food and clothing. 19

You shall also love the stranger, for you were strangers in the land of Egypt.

20You shall fear the LORD your God; him alone you

shall worship; to him you shall hold fast, and by his name you shall swear. 21

He is your praise; he is your God, who has done for you these great and awesome things that your own eyes have seen.

22Your ancestors went down to Egypt seventy persons; and now the

LORD your God has made you as numerous as the stars in heaven.

SECOND READING Colossians 1:15-20

A A reading from Colossians

15He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of all creation;

16for in him all things in

heaven and on earth were created, things visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or powers — all things have been created through him and for him.

17He himself is before all things, and in him all things hold together.

18He is the head

of the body, the church; he is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead, so that he might come to have first place in everything.

19For in him all the fullness of God was pleased to

dwell, 20

and through him God was pleased to reconcile to himself all things, whether on earth or in heaven, by making peace through the blood of his cross.

A Word of God, Word of life. C Thanks be to God.

THE GOSPEL Luke 6:12-19

P The Holy Gospel according to St. Luke C Glory to you, O Lord. 12

Now during those days he went out to the mountain to pray; and he spent the night in prayer to God.

13And when day came, he called his disciples and chose twelve of them,

whom he also named apostles: 14

Simon, whom he named Peter, and his brother Andrew, and James, and John, and Philip, and Bartholomew,

15and Matthew, and Thomas, and

James son of Alphaeus, and Simon, who was called the Zealot, 16

and Judas son of James, and Judas Iscariot, who became a traitor.

17He came down with them and stood on

a level place, with a great crowd of his disciples and a great multitude of people from all Judea, Jerusalem, and the coast of Tyre and Sidon.

18They had come to hear him and to

be healed of their diseases; and those who were troubled with unclean spirits were cured.

19And all in the crowd were trying to touch him, for power came out from him and

healed all of them.

APOSTLES’ CREED A Let us profess our faith in the words of the Apostles’ Creed

I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth.

I believe in Jesus Christ, God's only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried; he descended to the dead On the third day he rose again; he ascended into heaven, he is seated at the right hand of the Father, and he will come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.

OFFERING SONG Lord, Whose Love in Humble Service ELW 712

Lord, whose love in humble service bore the weight of human need, Who upon the cross, forsaken, worked your mercy's perfect deed: We, your servants, bring the worship not of voice alone, but heart; Consecrating to your purpose ev'ry gift which you impart.

OFFERING PRAYER

P Merciful God, C receive the gifts we bring, ourselves, our time, and our possessions. Through this meal unite us as your body, shining with the light of your justice and mercy; for the sake of him who gave himself for us, Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen THE GREAT THANKSGIVING

P The Lord be with you. C And also with you. P Lift up your hearts. C We lift them to the Lord. P Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. C It is right to give our thanks and praise

P In your Son, Christ Jesus, your eternal light has dawned upon our darkness, and by his death and resurrection you reveal your glory to every nation. And so with the Church on earth, with Simeon and Anna, and the whole company of heaven, we praise your name and join their unending hymn:

EUCHARISTIC PRAYER

P Blessed are you, Holy God…proclaim the mystery of our faith until he comes again to share the feast that has no end.

P Holy God, holy and merciful, receive our prayers and praise…now and forever.

P Make us bold, O merciful God, to address you as our Abba as we pray: (Abba is an intimate word used by Jesus to address his Father – as we might say, Daddy)

LORD'S PRAYER

C Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever and ever. Amen

PRAYER AFTER COMMUNION A Shepherding God, C We give you thanks that you have gathered your scattered flock again this day, feeding us richly with the food of Paradise. Accompany us as we serve you all the days of our lives, and gather us with the saints in the day of our death; through Jesus Christ, our Redeemer and Lord. Amen.

SENDING OF COMMUNION VISITORS A Gracious God, you took the form of a servant, offering yourself as food, comfort, and strength to a sick and hurting world. Anoint with a servant heart those who take your word and sacrament to our sisters and brothers who are sick, homebound or imprisoned. Grant grace, mercy, healing, and hope to those who feast on your body and blood and receive your words of new life. May we all recognize that we have a place and a home in the body of our Lord Jesus Christ. C Amen.

BLESSING P The God of glory dwell in you richly, name you beloved, and shine brightly on your

path; and the blessing of almighty God, the Father, the ☩ Son, and the Holy Spirit,

COMMEMORATIONS FOR THE WEEK:

Cyril, monk, died 869; Methodius, bishop, died 885; missionaries to the Slavs Tuesday, February 14, 2017 These two brothers from Thessalonika, Greece, were monks and were sent to bring Christianity to the Slavic people. In the course of their work they created a written language, inventing the Cyrillic alphabet for it, and translated the Bible and the liturgy. Martin Luther, renewer of the church, died 1546 Saturday, February 18, 2017 Though he began his adult church life as a simple Augustinian monk, Luther challenged the abuses he saw in the church, and his work eventually led to the Protestant Reformation. Luther's accomplishments included liturgical reform, translation of the Bible, and creation of the Small and Large Catechisms.
