Dear Parents / Carers

Welcome to our weekly newsletter. I have just settled the Year 11 students into what is their last examination for the majority of students. The students have worked incredibly hard and you can see this before every examination as the students take their final look at their revision cards and notes. The students look tired and speaking to a student this morning she said that she had sat 28 papers! I would like to thank all parents for your support through the examination period. The students can now look forward to their prom, leavers’ assembly and a well deserved rest.

I would like to congratulate our debating team who did incredibly well in a Leicestershire debating event. Particular praise goes to Alyssa Hurley and Jasmina Kooner who came first in their debates.

Healthy eating has had a high profile across the school this week as students have concocted delicious smoothies and participated in a number of events across the school.

I look forward to meeting many of you at the Sports Awards Evening on Wednesday. It is one of the highlights of my role as Headteacher to recognise the remarkable efforts and achievements of our students. I would like to thank the PE team and all of the staff volunteers who have delivered an exceptional package of fixtures and training over the course of this academic year.

Have a great weekend.

BOOK OF THE WEEK

thought OF THE WEEK

word OF THE WEEK

‘compassion’noun

sympathetic pity and concern for the sufferings or misfortunes of others.

‘Love and compassion are necessities, not luxuries. Without them humanity

cannot survive.’ Dalai Lama

In a world where violence forces thousands of families to flee for their lives each day, the time is now to show that the global public stands with refugees.

To do this, the UN Refugee Agency launched the #WithRefugees petition in June 2016 to send a message to governments that they must work together and do their fair share for refugees.

On World Refugee Day, held every year on June 20th, we commemorate the strength, courage and perseverance of millions of refugees. This year, World Refugee Day also marks a key moment for the public to show support for families forced to flee.

Why is compassion important to the Dalai Lama (a refugee himself)?

Two important teachings in Buddhism are karuna (compassion) and metta (loving kindness), can non

Buddhists also follow these teachings?

How can you show compassion and kindness?

This week’s Book of the Week is How to Drink From a Frog. It’s Healthy Eating Week this week which is a perfect opportunity to brush up on your food knowledge. Don’t know your onions? Unable to suss your sausages, fathom your fruit or get your head around hazelnuts? If so, this may be the book for you! This book is packed with interesting food facts, stories, quizzes, recipes and timelines through the ages. If you want to find out who ate an entire aeroplane then tuck in to this book.

My experience on TS RoyalistHave you ever been away on your birthday? If so have you ever been on a naval boat or any boat during your birthday. Well I have, so let me tell you what happened.

On the Saturday I went to Birmingham New Street (train station) to take the train from Birmingham to Dartmouth. When I got on the train I found more cadets who were going on Royalist so I stayed with them as when we got to Dartmouth we had to take the bus and ferry to get to where we needed to be.

During the time on Royalist we did so many brilliant activities, some of them consisted of climbing up the mast, setting the sails and my favourite driving the ship. Talking about driving the boat on my birthday 23rd April I sailed TS Royalist into Dartmouth and into Brixham. It was quite nerve-racking, but it was very fun and interesting.

After reading my experience on TS Royalist if you would also like to join sea cadets, I would recommend that you go on it. Units around Lutterworth are Leicester South, Hinckley, Broughton Astley and Market Harborough. The best one is Hinckley because that is the one I go to!

The journey I did on Royalist was Dartmouth to Plymouth. You might be saying that isn’t far but it gives you a few days to practice all of the skills you need to learn and gives you time to get use to the ship and the helm (steering wheel). One more thing if you are wondering If the food was nice, the answer is a yes. It was very nice; you get a main and a desert for dinner, soup and cobs for lunch and sometimes a cooked breakfast.

TS Royalist is the flag ship of the sea cadets holding up to 24 cadets. Royalist was built in 2014 by Astilleros Gondan S.A. in Spain costing £4,800,000 to build. The length of the ship is around 32 metres with the weight of the ship at 130 tonnes. The sail plan has a 536 square metres sail area. During the time on Royalist we did so many brilliant activities. Some of them consisted of climbing up the mast which was quite nerve racking but very fun, setting the sails and my favourite sailing the ship. It was quite nerve-racking but it was very fun and interesting because it was the first time I had driven a ship.
