Divider detail

Divider Rail

Used to separate the louvres when panel height increases. The design also allows the rail to be used as a handle when opening/closing the panel and aid easy removal for cleaning purposes.

Available in two sizes defaulted to the chosen louvre size (see below left).

A divider rail is required if the panel height exceeds 1570mm.

• Minimum divider height 64mm Louvre) = 323mm (inc. frame)

• Minimum divider height (89mm & 114mm Louvre) = 423mm (inc. frame)

• Maximum number of dividers in any one panel = 2

• Maximum distance between any two dividers = 1270mm

• 65mm divider - to be used with large sized louvre only

• 94mm divider - to be used with medium & extra large louvre only

Divider detailWhen measuring for dividers, the measurement is always taken from the bottom of the frame up to the centre line of the

divider rail. The below images show how to correctly specify the divider distance.

Divider countThe below text and image show the number of dividers, depending on panel width and height.

Note: If panel configuration is not 1L, 1R, 1L 1R, the Bi-fold table applies for number of dividers in shutter height.

Divider height toleranceDuring manufacture of a shutter panel, the positioning of the louvresin the stiles are dependant on the top & bottom rails being combined

with the appropriate rail cap, size of louvre and divider rail, togetherwith best fit positioning of the divider rail itself (if present). Using theabove factors, the combined top & bottom rails (with cappings) canvary in height by as much as 102mm.

The result of all of this means that there’ll be a tolerance to the centreline position of the divider rail and it may not be possible to locate at the requested height. The below image and text show the tolerances expected for finished divider height position (the +/- mmis taken from the centreline of the divider rail).

Divider height positioningIf wanting to position shutters adjacent to each other, but each having a differenttotal height (typically a doorway next to a window) and a divider rail is requested, thecentreline to each divider rail may not be pos-sible to align due to the necessary rail & cap combinations needed to manufacturethe panel. Furthermore, the top and bottom rails will vary in height and look visually different.

If requesting the same divider height for eachshutter, the (+/-) tolerance to the final posi-tion of the divider rail may be that as shownin 3.9.

Tier on tierTier on tier shutters have the flexibility to either have the top or bottom half panels opened/closed to control the light and privacy of the room.

The following image shows how to measure for this model type.

A) Max panel height (inc. frame) with one or two dividers

B) Split height for doors (always measure from the bottom upto centreline of T post)

C) Max panel height with one or two dividers

D) Total shutter height (inc. frame)

The maximum divider height found on the size tables relateto one door panel only.

Typical example being:

Total shutter height = 2000mm

Split height = 600mm

In this instance, panel A will not have a divider rail, but panelC will, due to panel height with 0 dividers exceeding themaximum.

Tier on tier T post detailLuxaflex tier on tier shutters have a permanent T post that spans across the width of the shutter. This serves two purposes -

• Additional strength to the frame.

• The facility to keep the panels in place when in the closedposition, by means of the panel lock feature.

1. T post alignment blocks (two per side) are secured to the vertical outer frame, located centrally to the split height.

2. T post slides over the alignment blocks.

3. Secure T post with fixing screw. It’s recommended that the installationhole be sited on the highest side of the T post.

Shaped shutter overviewAs well as offering the practicalities of traditional rectangular shutters, the bespoke shaped Luxaflex shutter has the abilityto match both the window dressing and the shutter below for a seamless look.

The louvres are installed horizontally, so as to match in appearance with the shutter below and also allow the user to control light filtration through the use of a tilt wand, clearview® or a combination of the a depending on model type. Available in colours cotton, pearl & vanilla, together with the following frames and louvre sizes -

• Casing (Surface only)

• Deluxe Trim (Flush only)

• L (Flush, recess & surface)

• Trim (Flush only)

• Z (Flush only)

• 64mm & 89mm louvre only

Ranging from 350mm-1875mm wide and only available with arches that have a true radius, the Luxaflex arch shutter willaccommodate the majority of arched windows available. If specifying the S53 or S60 model, it will be necessary to introduce vertical frame supports when the width increases beyond 805mm. This is to help support and stop the louvresfrom bowing.

Shaped shutter overviewLuxaflex arch shutters are only available as a non hingedmodel. To help keep the shutter within the frame and stopit from falling out unexpectedly, spring loaded panel locksare inserted at various positions around the edge, allowingthe panel to snap into the groove of the frame. In addition, a magnet is fitted to the top of the panel for further security.

The image on the left shows this in more detail.

If installing an arch directly above a rectangular shutter and one or more vertical supports are required, it’s important to know that the vertical support and combinedstile thickness will look different. It’s also recommendedthat the shutter fitting below the arch is constructed withthe same number of panels as there are sections in the arch above, to achieve a consistent look when in-situ.

The example below shows an S53 with one vertical supportplaced directly above the centreline of a 1L 1R. For reference, the thickness of two panel stiles are twice the thickness of one vertical support.

The criteria of manufacturing arched shutters state the arc must be true, meaning it can’t have any discrepancies to the radius or be made from a segmentalarch. The below image show a few examples of true radiifound within the circumference of a circle and what is possible.

So long as the base width of the arc is at least twice theheight and it conforms to the above, it should be possibleto manufacture.

Key points -

• 64mm or 89mm louvre to be used only. This needs to beconsidered if fitting a rectangular shutter underneath

• Non hinged with operating louvres

Panel Configuration - Bays

To determine maximum sizes, refer to the following size charts in relation to the shutter style:

• Café

• Traditional

• Teir on Teir

Each facet of the bay that is to have a shutter installed, is to be classed as an individual and should be written down on thesurvey pad as such.

Note: It is recommended that when fitting shutters into bays (angled or square), the same shutter height be specifiedfor each facet, even if the aperture heights vary slightly. This is to ensure the louvers/ dividers align to each adjacentshutter when in-situ.

Surveying checklistThere are numerous things to take into account when surveying for a shutter installation.

Probably, the most important one to consider is the aperture to which the shutter will be installed into.

Check list• Before any measuring is carried out, check the aperture for square using a spirit level. If necessary, measurements will

have to be compensated for during the survey. Older properties require consideration for walls being out of square andmay require extra trimming to obtain a satisfactory finish.

• When products are going to be installed down to the floor, the finished floor level can be very critical to the finish andoperation of the product - always check with a spirit level. If out of level and it is of concern, then suitable alternatives should be discussed with the customer. Any agreed changes should be documented and signed for by the customer.

• Observe existing windows & doors to see whether they open inwards or outwards. If opening in, check to see if the finished shutter location will fall foul/restrict movement of the opening window. Awareness of keys left in window handles should also be considered for clearance.

• Note any obstructions that may affect the installation or operation of the shutters and bring this to the customer’s attention. Discuss alternatives where possible.

• If shutter frame sits down onto the floor, check to see if the property has underfloor heating. If yes, advise of suitable fixing and agree with customer.

• If restricting, check to see if it’s a fire exit.

• Measure a minimum of three positions horizontally - top, middle & bottom.

• Measure a minimum of three positions vertically - left, right & centre.

• Calculate diagonal from dimensions taken and check against actual.

• Check depth of rebate/reveal for both flush & recess fitting shutters.

• Check condition of fixing area to determine whether it is suitable to secure frame.

• Be aware of the window board overhang either side of the window recess. Allow for this when considering finished shutter width and chosen architrave.

• Confirm with customer the configuration of door panels and how they operate.

• For bay windows, measure the angles, depth of window board and any feature that may obstruct the fit. Alsocheck for top/bottom fixings.

Measuring Bay Windows - ChecklistBefore undertaking any measuring for Bay windows, the following points act as general guidelines to help with the dimensions required and ease of install.

• Check bay window area for level and plumb.

• Check for protruding handles.

• Mark Datum line around the surface of the sill to clear any obstructions, i.e. window handles, alarm boxes etc.

• Measure between pencil marks and record each frame width - these will be the overall dimensions on the order form.

• Where possible, make returns same size.

• Depending on level of window board, take front and side measurements, record the shortest dimension anddeduct a further 5mm to avoid shutter frame being too tight during installation.

Measuring - Angle baysSurveying

• Check aperture for level & plumb and build in suitable tolerances.

• Width: Using bay window template, pencil mark outside to outside of L frame & record this measurement. Repeat for each additional frame.

• Height: Measure the aperture in three places, record the shortest dimension and deduct a further 5mm.

• Calculate diagonal of each frame and check against actual.

• Please specify on the order form the number of bay posts required and the heightrequired (PLEASE NOTE IT IS RECOMMENDED TO ADD 20MM TO YOUR HEIGHT WHEN ORDERING. THIS WILL HELP WHEN INSTALLING.

Insert Bottom Screw(s)

• Do this only after the panels have been racked and are square.

• This can allow you to cover inconsistencies with out-of-square sills, and help the aesthetic appearance of the shutter bottom.

• 4 sided frames are best because you can always caulk frame gaps, but panel to sill gaps are always visible, and tough to hide.

Insert Top Screw(s)

• Do this step last, prior to installing magnets or the use of panel lock.

• There is much adjustment that can be made to both lower or raise the frame top to bring it in line with the panels.

• This can make a good installation look bad and a less than good installation look good.

Measuring Shapes - Inside Mount1. Measure the width - measure the insdie width of the window frame

along the bottome of the opening (A)

2. Measure the height

A) Measure the inside height of the window frame at the centre to thehighest vertical point (B)

B) From centre point B, measure out every 230mm and make a mark

C) At each mark, measure vertically to the edge of the opening

D) Note each vertical dimension on the order form or supply sketch and in-clude all dimensions.

3. Measure legs (Tunnels and Eyebrows only)

A) Measure from the bottom of where the arch will be located to the pointat which the radius begins (G & H)

B) Measure both sides and record the smallest measurement.

4. Depth clearance - ensure there is enough depth clearance to install thearch and enough room to perate the louvres (speciality shape clearancesare the same as standard shutters)

5. Create template for any speciality shape that does not have a consistentradius.

6. Framed arch mounted to framed shutter

A) The width of the arch and the width of the shutter below must be thesame dimension.

B) Measure the shutter opening to first determine the width.

C) Measure the shutter opening and determine the height of the shutter, mark this point since this will be the measuringpoint for the arch.

D) Measure the width of the arch from the top of the shutter to the top of the opening.

E) When using the Trim Frame, Deluxe Trim Frame or Z Frame, the arch must include Sill Frame at the bottom and the shutter must include Sill Frame at the top.

F) If needed, decrease the dimension of the shutter below to allow for proper fit of the arch.

G) Trim Frame and Deluxe Trim Frame are recommended due to the size of the flanges which allows the shutter to be un-dersized slightly but ensures the frame will cover the increased gap between the frame and the opening.

Measuring Shapes - Outside Mount1. Measure the width - measure to the outermost desired point to which the arch frame will extend across the bottom

of the opening (A)

2. Measure the height - measure from where the outside bottom fo the arch will be to the highest point at the centre of the opening (B)

3. Measure legs (Tunnels and Eyebrows only)

A) Measure from the bottom of where the arch will be located to the point at which the radius begins (C & D)

B) Measure both sides and split the difference if any

4. Depth clearance - ensure there is enough depth clearance to install the arch and enough room to operate the louvres(speciality shape clearances are the same as standard shutters)

5. Create template for any speciality shape that does not have a consistent radius.

6. Framed arch mounted to framed shutter

A) The width of the arch and the width of the shutter below must be thesame dimension

B) Measure the shutter to first determine the width

C) Measure the shutter and determine the height of the shutter, mark thispoint since this will be the measuring point for the bottom of the arch.

D) Measure the height of the arch from the mark indicating the top of theshutter

E) If needed, adjust the dimension of the shutter below to allow for properfit of the arch.
