relevant today. Great design is something that spurs curiosity,

In the world of design, journeyingin some way, shape or formis a constant. The turn around a showroom corner can lead to an inspiring discovery. An architectural structure rising from the landscape might spur a Moleskine full of ideas. From early September through late June, the pace in our industry is rapid-fire with fresh introductions in textiles, furniture, lighting, home accents and materials. To a large extent, this is what stimulates us, excites us, and nudges the design zeitgeist along.

If ever there was a time to decelerate though, it is summer, when the pace slackens and so many escape to far-flung places (Will everyone be shopping in Europe this summer? Seems so). Taking a journeywhether its as modest as transitioning from your living room to the backyard for an afternoon, or more elaborate, as in two weeks overseasfurther encourages the design dialogue. For those of us with a desire to remain curious, and sweep through life with a fine-tuned eye, the adventure never stops.

palm tree species of any park in Los Angeles, and Ive always drawn a lot of inspiration from these amazing trees.

Christopher Wilcox is the founder and the creative force behind Los Angeles lifestyle brand Natural Curiosities. He owns a prolifi c collection of butterfl y wings and hopes to one day design the ultimate nature-inspired boutique hotel.

    2 THE ARCHITECT RON RADZINER

Happening in L.A.:Im really excited about phase two of the Expo Line, which will extend our new light rail service from Culver City to Santa Monica, meaning well be able to travel from downtown to the beach in under an hour at any time of day.

For the design-obsessed: Checking out Rudolph Schindlers Kings Road House, Frank Lloyd Wrights Ennis House and the Bradbury Building are all essentials to cross o any design lovers bucket list.

Materials of the moment:Recently, weve been enjoying using a zinc paneling material called Anthra-Zinc, which patinas beautifully over time. While weve also worked with lots of metals like stainless steel and titanium, Ive not yet used Cor-Ten steel, and Im very much looking forward to it.

Keep an eye on:Landscape architect Jay Gri th has a great eye for rhythm in the landscape and for using California-native plants and Mediterranean succulents in compelling ways. He surprises me every time.

Luxury isIn Los Angeles, and for myself, luxury means having an outdoor space thats part of your home, whether its a little courtyard o a bungalow or an expansive yard.

1 THE ARTISANCHRISTOPHER WILCOXHaving a moment:It has to be Apple. As I see it, they are Californias ambassadors of creative thinking with products that have awesome multi-dimensionality slowly catching up to the unlimited capabilities of the human mind.

Up next:I am launching a new project through Natural Curiosities in the fall called The Nature Creative. Ill be inviting artists, designers, celebrities and creative thinkers into my design studio to craft products that are all about celebrating nature. Then, theyll be sold through our distribution channels with a percentage of sales going to charities that support the environment.

What keeps you curious about design?Design is a language used for artistic thinkers to express themselves visually without necessarily the use of words. It is pure creative expression, and for me, its the only place to be.

Favorite item in inventory:I have been working with hand-painted golden feathers for many years now, and I just cant seem to let them go. They represent fl ight, which appeals to the freewheeling side of me.

Los Angeles most beautiful building:The Gri th Observatoryor, as we like to call it, the Cali White Houseboasts the citys most impressive architecture, hands down.

For the design-obsessed:Be sure to check out the Jensen Recreation Center, which houses my studio, and then take a walk through the streets of Echo Park. There are so many incredible things to see here. Im also constantly encouraging all of my friends to visit The Museum of Jurassic Technology; its a strange but interesting little place.

Best place to get lost:Elysian Park is one of my favorite spots in the city. It has the most number of

Whats trending?Sustainability. We consistently employ passive and active solar design and water e ciency strategies into our work and always will. We carefully consider the orientation, layout and location of our homes on the site, use energy-e cient windows and glazing systems, and implement low-fl ow plumbing fi xtures and rainwater catchment processes to conserve water.

3 THE OUTDOOR GURUJANICE FELDMANOne to watch:George M. Beylerian, the well-known design impresario, just launched his De Gustibus line in Milan this year. It is an assembled collection of objects created by some of the best Italian design talents of the past 50 years. The personalities and styles of the artists, designers and architects commissioned for this project are easily refl ected in the exclusive pieces.

4 THE PHOTOGRAPHERDAVID TSAYFavorite shopping destination:My husband and I have lived in Highland Park for about 20 years, and we have seen big changes in the area, especially in the last couple of years. Im excited to see this neighborhood fl ourish and fi nd its own voice and unique design identity.

For the design-obsessed:There are probably more interesting and adventurous fl ea market excursions in rural parts of the country, but the Rose Bowl Flea Market is just so much funespecially very early before the sun comes up. Its amazing to watch all the industry people and store buyers shopping intensely with walkie talkies and buying up all the crazy good stu before the general crowd wakes up.

Best place to get lost:Point Dume State Beach. I like to drive right up to the sand at the end of the driveway to watch the long summer sunsets. Most people go there for rock climbing, so the beach itself is always pretty empty.

Go-to spot:I love that the Norton Simon Museum is always kind of operating under the radar. It has some of the most amazing art collections, and its so quiet in there. I like to stand in front of the old masters and be in total awe at how they literally painted light. I eyeball each highlight and shadow through the brushstrokes sometimes so closely the docent will ask me to back o .

Dream collaboration:Kelly Wearstlers work is constantly evolving and growing. Her spaces are so textured and layered and almost chaotic that I think itd be a fun challenge to explain them through a two-dimensional, photographic space.

Up next:I just wrapped a long shoot for designer and blogger Emily Hendersons upcoming co ee table book about styling. Its coming out this fall, and its going to be beautiful. We got to shoot at some really gorgeous homes.

David Tsay is a Los Angeles-based photographer whose portfolio includes shoots for the nations top magazines and lifestyle brands. He credits his mentor Clive Piercy for his love of apartment building sign typography.

Shop til you drop: West Hollywood has a vibrant collection of showrooms and design boutiques, which always show the latest fashion and home concepts, but I love browsing the retail shops in the Upper Village of Montecito and Coast Village Road.

Cant get enough:Loro Piana makes beautiful clothing with exceptional quality and discerning detail, and I adore their Panama hats. I also love the designs of the great Milan-based designer and architect Piero Lissoni.

Great way to beat the summer heat:Its so easy to spend an afternoon at the historic Lotusland estate in Montecito; I particularly enjoy sketching the incredible gardens during my visits.

On your radar:I am looking forward to the opening of the South Beach hotel in Singapore. It is a part of an amazing residential, hospitality, commercial complex designed by Philippe Starck, and we are proud to be outfi tting some of the hotels spaces.

For the design-obsessed:The Wallis Annenberg Center for the Performing Arts is a stunning juxtaposition of historic 1930s architectureit was originally the Beverly Hills post o ceand the design language of today.

Coming up:This year, we are launching several new collections, including The Masters Aluminum Series in collaboration with interior designer Orlando Diaz-Azcuy. Ive long admired his talent, and I am so honored to be working with him.

Brought together by a love of all things textile, Stacy Waggoner and Kate Reynolds teamed up to create a cutting-edge design studio offering fabrics, rugs and wallpaper motifs from top designers around the world. Now, almost a decade later, Studio Four NYC boasts some of the hottest names in textile design alongside emerging talents, with much of the duos success lying in their creative acuity for partnering with artists, innovators and risk-takers. This summer, Studio Four releases three not-to-be-missed lines that fit just that mold.

Designer-painter Rebecca Atwood first burst onto the scenepaintbrush in handcaptivating her Instagram audience one bespoke pillow and dreamy watercolor print at a time. Her artistry soon led to a partnership between Atwood and Studio Four, one that has since developed into a blooming design venture as the Cape Cod native sets to release her debut collection of hand-painted and marbleized fabrics with the studio. Her textiles are so chic and livable, says Reynolds. Be on the lookout for her wallpaper collection to launch soon.

Just when you thought leather had nothing new to offer, Brit Kleinman, of Brooklyns Avo, enters the field, proving the possibilities have only just begun: Her jaw-dropping block-printed cowhides, branded with bold, artistic patterns and daring geometrics, incorporate a touch of modernity into the timeworn material. We love leather and the luxury of something that keeps getting better with age, says Waggoner of the partnership. Brit is changing the way that people use and experience this textile.

Studio Fours next debut proves that the art of plaster isnt lost but rather in a state of renaissance thanks to Celeste Coughlin of Asterisk Designs. This doyenne of Venetian

plaster developed a specialized technique for transcribing waxed plaster onto paper, coining a perfect science to translate this ancient (and tedious) process onto a custom roll of wallpaper. We have always loved the gorgeous, creamy texture of Venetian plaster walls, says Waggoner, and when we met Celeste we knew we were destined for something great to unfold.

With all these exciting collections debuting this season, Studio Fours Chelsea showroom is the perfect spot to garner inspiration for any and all design endeavors. Design is a luxury, says Reynolds. It should always inspire and never intimidate. ph

THE SURF CLUB MIAMIAn infamous, members-only social club that once entertained the likes of Frank Sinatra and Elizabeth Taylor is being boldly reimagined by acclaimed architect Richard Meier. Located in the South Florida town of Surfside, the Surf Club will be a visual dialogue between the old and the new, transforming the original 1930s club into a Four Seasons boutique hotel and residences. Meiers material palette will be simple: Floor-to-ceiling glass will maximize horizontal views of the Atlantic Ocean, while local surfaces, namely fl ooring of porous coral stone, will detail the exterior. Inside, handpicked furnishings will be set amidst the clean backdrop of the architects signature colorwhite. thesurfclub.com

CHICAGO ATHLETIC ASSOCIATION CHICAGO Founded in 1890 by families of American sports royalty (think Wrigley and Spalding), the Chicago Athletic Association has been a fi xture in the Windy City for more than a century. The famed location, originally designed by architect Henry Ives Cobb, has now been revamped into a luxury lifestyle hotel by design duo Roman and Williams. We were devoted to preserving the character and details of this historic building while creating a new language, say the designers. The aesthetic maintains the buildings original fi replaces with bas-relief wood carvings, expansive marble staircases and stained glass, yet speaks to classic Americana with vintage artifacts like wooden gym ladders, Victorian-inspired lighting and leather furnishings. chicagoathletichotel.com

THE PALLADIAN HOTEL SEATTLE The Palladian Hotel, established in Seattle in 1910, was named for the Palladian windows that defi ned the architecture of the time. Today, San Francisco-based designer Nicole Hollis has taken this historically signifi cant building and given it a speakeasy vibe with a sense of humor (pillows printed with Tom Sellecks portrait, for example). Reclaimed-wood headboards juxtapose crisp, white Frette linens in the guest rooms, while brass accents, velvet upholstery and a tufted-leather check-in characterize the lobby, with the hotels original doors standing at the entrance of the gym. Ornamented by custom Ladies & Gentlemen light fi xtures, Hollis warm yet playful interiors program boasts a quintessential Seattle feel and refl ects the pulsating street culture found just outside. palladianhotel.com

    HE SAID, SHE SAID

I WANT MY PIECES TO FEEL LIKE SOMETHING YOU WOULD HAND DOWN TO THE NEXT GENERATION.-WINDSOR SMITH Athena & Atlas Sconces / Windsor Smith Collection for Arteriors / $675 each / arteriorshome.com.

I want my pieces to feel like something you would hand down to the next generation, explains designer Windsor Smith in reference to her new 40-piece collection for Arteriors. Brimming with furnishings, lighting and home accents in a range of tonal golds, mixed metals and varied marbles, the line fl irts between masculine and feminine dichotomies. Case in point: Smiths Athena sconce (shown here in silver) was inspired by the delicate drop of an earring, while the Atlas sconce (shown in gold)

reveals the same caged form but in a more industrial, geometric outline. It is through shape and silhouette, says Smith, that instant sculpture is evoked. Laced with neoclassical and Greco-Roman infl uences, the collection leaves a rich patina in its wake, beckoning centuries past while maintaining modern relevance. My goal was to reinterpret traditional in a beautiful, lasting way with utilitarian pieces that are meant to be used and not thought of as too precious, Smith explains. Mission accomplished.

the Latin american art Museum in Miami will feature sculpture on its expansive cantilevered terraces to extend the experience outdoors.

boom townwhat was once a static cityscape radiates with new energy as miamiand its proliferating skylinegets its place in the sun.

theres something special brewing in Miami. a city known for its sultry year-round summers and pulsating nightlife has quickly become a seedbed for culturati and starchitects the world over. case in point is the proposed Latin american art Museum, whose imposing layered structure, shown here, by New York- and Mexico city-based FR-ee/Fernando Romero enterprise will house the private collection of art aficionado Gary Nader upon its opening in 2016. Joining the grand landmark is a dizzying register of new permanent installations that will soon dot the skyline; the renowned names behind them reading like the roll call for a gathering of modern architectures brightest

stars: Rem Koolhaas (Faena Forum), Norman Foster (Faena house), Zaha hadid (1000 Museum condos), Jeanne Gang (Sweetbird South Residences) and arquitectonica (Brickell city centre), to list a handful. even hollywood heavy hitters like The Great Gatsby director Baz Luhrmann and his set designer wife, catherine Martin, are lending their fanciful design vision to the interiors of what will become the Faena hotel, one of the elements making up the much-anticipated Faena district in Miami Beach, a fantasyland dreamed up by argentine developer alan Faena set to include hotels, residences, retail and an art and culture forum. its safe to say that Miami is architectures new muse.

Your new fine art series focuses on exotic animals in unexpected places. What inspired the collection? Since living in Los Angeles, Ive always enjoyed the quick escape to the desert, and the Parker Palm Springs has been my longtime favorite hotel there. This was a chance to let my imagination run wild, and apparently it ran right into a menagerie of wild animals enjoying the hotel with me.

How did animals become your muse? I have a deep love for flamingos and penguins and couldnt stop envisioning them on the property. Working with them and the capuchin monkey, zebra and baby giraffe was so much funI wish I could live in this fantasy every day.

Any divas on set? We had trainers to direct the crew and myself on how to interact with them to keep them as happy models. Zack the zebra wasnt much of a fan of the balloons, as they kept popping, but he was a professional and we got the shot.

Images of animals in dreamlike settings are one part of your repertoire, but youre also known for aerial shots of beach scenes. How do you capture the perfect composition? When Im in the air, people and objects begin to stand out and

form patterns below. Once Im up there, everything magically comes together visually for me and Im able to capture the natural art that is being created below in the distance.

Whats the most daring stunt youve done to get the perfect shot? Standing on a 10-foot inflatable boat in the waters of Antarctica, shooting beach balls up against icebergs the size of a skyscraper that could break apart at any moment. It was the thrill of a lifetime.

Youve said your favorite part of your job is getting to see the world. Can you offer a piece of travel advice to those filled with the same wanderlust? If youre ever in Bhutan, you must visit the Tigers Nest Monastery, one of the countrys most sacred religious sites. Built in the 8th century on the side of a cliff, it is something of another world.

Photographer Gray Malin journeys to far and away places, capturing eccentric moments that spark fantasy and wonder, like llamas adorned in balloons amidst Bolivias salt flats, or rainbow-hued sheep in Australia. In his new fine art series, Gray Malin at the Parker, he keeps his zest for adventure close to home, shooting at the Parker Palm Springs as exotic animals playfully explore the iconic resort that unites luxury with amusement. Malin put down his camera to discuss the enchanting series, where monkeys are bellhops and giraffes are the guests, temporarily on view at the hotel. With an infectious joie de vivre, he proves the old adage: not all who wander are lost. he

Its fantastic to drift and just let a place wash over you, designer Tracey Boyd says of her approach to travel. Until recently, her chances to do just that were rare. As the creative director of the coveted fashion label Boyd, she was constantly in motion, creating edgy yet feminine clothing. Her singular visionone collection featured fleece ball gownswon her a New Generation Designer of the Year honor at the 2000 Rover British Fashion Awards, along with a devoted international following, but little time for anything else. When I moved into a more organic way of designing, I decided to go on trips for two or three months, she says. I wanted to go deeper. This change of focus yielded Aboydbazaar, a collection of clothing and accessories influenced by her biggest passions: life, travel, art and fashion.

Since then, Boyd has been busy soaking up the worlds sights and sounds, be it the modern shapes of Singapores skyline or the traditional beading practices in Penang. India remains a favorite destination and a constant source of inspiration. Its such a place of contrast, says Boyd. When Im there, I have too many ideas. I have to file them away and then come home to make sense of them. With the luxury of time, the designer can now absorb the lessons from her travels and incorporate them into her work, such as in her latest venture, Boyd, a line of furniture inspired by her journeys and currently available through Anthropologie. Im obsessed with finding out how things are done but looking at them in a contemporary way, she says. Then, I put my own spin on them.

Next on Boyds itinerary? Shes heading to the U.S., where shell launch Boyd with Resource Decor at High Point Market in October. Imbued with color and texture, the line mixes modern and traditional shapes in materials ranging from lacquer and metal to concrete and shells. Before that, however, shell pack a bag with a sketch pad, a few of her Aboydbazaar shirts, a collection of black and white beads and a beloved Dries Van Noten scarf and head to Puglia, in Southern Italy, to a convent that was reinvented as a hotel. Its filled with tribal art, textiles and miles of books on art, sculpture and furniture. Its like having a holiday in the most fabulous library with incredible food and beautiful gardens, says Boyd. Its a mixture of work and play and sums up my ideal way to travel.
