ith any luck, spring will come soon to us anxiously awaiting Ontarians. While we’re still depending on our furnaces and fireplaces to keep us warm, here are a few safety fast-facts to keep top of mind, courtesy of Enbridge Gas Distribution: >>>W

FIREPLACE &FURNACESAFELY

Quick tips to run your FOR YOUR FIREPLACE

• Be careful near your fireplace - the glass window and ceramic surfaces stay hot long after the fireplace has been turned off.

• Teach your kids that touching natural gas appliances, especially a hot natural gas fireplace, is dangerous.

• Make sure your fireplace is cool before cleaning the glass - wiping hot glass with a damp cloth can crack it.

• Never use a fireplace with cracked glass until it’s been inspected or replaced by a licensed Heating, Venti-lation and Air Conditioning (HVAC) contractor.

• If your pilot light goes out, follow the manufacturer’s instructions to safely relight it.

FOR YOUR FURNACE

• Check your furnace filter regularly (every three months), and clean or replace it when it is dirty.

• Have your natural gas furnace inspected annually by your licensed HVAC contractor.

• Keep flammable materials away from both your furnace and your fireplace.

• Make sure there’s adequate air supply in your furnace room. Without enough fresh air, fuel doesn’t burn as cleanly, which could cause it to release toxic gases like carbon monoxide.

That is the power of “cognitive computing”, -- computer systems that can ingest and reason about vast quantities of information as well as learn and interact naturally with people. IBM Watson represents a new era in com-puting history, where systems that learn, as opposed to being programmed, will enable a new partnership between humans and computers that will enhance and scale human expertise. These include advances in the diagnosis and treatment of disease, the management of impossibly complex financial, telecommunications and energy systems, and even deciding what you should have for dinner.

Now, to further demonstrate the power of cognitive computing, IBM has recently launched a quintessentially Canadian project - reinventing poutine.

To kick it off, Watson has analyzed countless ingre-dients at the molecular level, comparing quintillions of combinations and cross-referencing what is known about human preferences to help chefs devise unique poutine recipes – five for Toronto and five for Montreal. The public is invited to try them and vote online for their favourite from each city, at ibm.com/cognitivecooking/ca

Cognitive cooking is a great way to demonstrate the in-credible power of Watson tech-nology, IBM points out. This cognitive computer system responds to natural-language questions, sifting through unimaginable oceans of data in any form. One example is locating symptoms from text books, databases, test results, or physician’s notes to help doc-tors make a diagnosis faster and find the most effective treat-

ment for an individual. Watson assesses all possibilities and responds in plain language with the best option. >>>

. . .cognitive cooking will also be used to promote and maintain individual health.

In the world of food, the world’s best chefs know a few dozen taste combinations that might work well together. Watson looks at a multiplicity of conceivable ingredient combinations, at a molecular level, to find complimentary flavours. A human chef might never consider mushrooms and strawberries, which share similarities on the molecular level, as compatible, but Watson knows. Its earlier kitchen creations such as ceviche fish and chips, Vietnamese apple kebabs, and Azerbaijani Saffron Cake, with cherry plum, pistachio and cloves, have already got rave reviews.

Creative cooking may seem an unconventional task for one of the world’s most powerful analytical technologies, but along with demonstrating Watson’s abilities, cognitive cooking will also be used to promote and maintain individual health. As it is more widely adapted, personalized applications will make recommen-dations based on an individual’s specific medical needs (like calorie reduction, insulin control, cholesterol control, etc.) and flavour preferences. School and hospital meals can be optimized, to make vegetable and other healthful combinations that are as appealing as desserts. Eating healthy has never tasted so good.

Rewind, for example, to the early 1900s when we embraced a growing trend for opulence in décor show-casing elegance and grandeur in rooms (think Down-town Abbey) with bold, dark colours. A glamorous approach to design in the roaring 20s continued with the use of golds, blacks and silvers - influenced by the Art Deco styles of Hollywood. New trend colours this year, with hues like Spectrolite (PF73) and Boysen-berry (PF23) from Canada’s PARA Paints, resemble the invigorating blues and luxurious Bordeaux reds of decades past.

Moving into the 40s and 50s post-war era, Canadians saw the emergence of softer pastel shades. The design trends saw an explosion of mint greens and powder pinks, while, the 60s ‘flower power’ generation showed a trend towards vivid, psychedelic colours. In a nod to this decade of wonderful chaos, the “anything goes” at-titude of PARA’s new Impulse palette is bringing back shades like Alexandrite (PF61) and Guava (PF32) similar to the bright teals and blazing oranges that were so influential in that decade. >>>

Earthy tones reigned supreme during the 1970s with such staples as burnt orange and harvest gold. The 80s saw a return to pinks, purples and greens, but this time it was shocking neon hues that seized the fashion and décor styles of the day. The millennium brought us a revival of tinted whites and classic neutrals with a movement that was led by a minimalistic approach to designing with colour. Classic and modern neutrals like the stone grey Rosemary (3) from PARA’s Dawn palette complement the most recent decade of subtle elegance.

“Over the past 100 years we have seen many colour trends come and go - proving that to know where you’re going, you have to know where you’ve been,” says Garry Belfall, senior brand manager at PARA Paints. “As 2015 marks our 100th anniversary, we are excited to reintroduce the classic colours in our 2015 Centennial Colour Palette that have inspired decades of design.”

The past can be a source for endless inspiration and as the adage often goes, everything old is new again.
