Jerusalem’s German Colony was founded by the Templars

at the end of the 19th century. Stylized after a typical

village in Southwest Germany, the colony was built with

local Jerusalem stone.

Throughout the years, luxurious oriental style buildings

with high ceilings and decorated windows were added to

the pastoral neighborhood adding an eclectic nature to

the Colony.

Emek Refaim Street is home to dozens of restaurants,

popular cafes, fashion boutiques, banks and even a unique

theater. The area has evolved into a popular leisure and

entertainment hub for both city residents and tourists.

The “Hinneni” (Here I am) name for the project was

inspired by a 1978 conceptual painting by Michael

Sgan-Cohen (1944 – 1999), a world renowned, Israeli

artist, art historian, curator and critic. Sgan-Cohen was

one of the pioneers in the sophisticated use of the

Hebrew language as a means of expression in

contemporary visual art. Hebrew served in his view as

the bridge between Jewish heritage, particularly the

Bible, and the contemporary search for Israeli cultural

identity.

“Hinneni” perfectly proclaims “Here I Am”, answering

the ancient call to return to Jerusalem.
