One of the world’s great unexplored destinations, South America is a vast continent of staggering natural beauty, colourful people and a rich historic legacy. Come and discover the lost city of Machu Picchu high in the Peruvian Andes or get swept away by the tango in Buenos Aires. From the depths of the vast Amazon rainforest, to beautiful Atlantic beaches, the windswept plains of Patagonia and the soaring peaks of the Andes, there is a whole Nuevo Mundo waiting to be discovered

You can now take advantage of the Southern Hemisphere winter during our summer and ski the world class slopes of Chile and Argentina from June to October; enjoy the challenge of the best golf courses on the continent in Argentina; and you can explore the unique wildlife of the famous Galapagos Islands on a luxurious yacht all year round. One of the highlights of a trip to South America is the spectacular Iguazu Falls on the border between Brazil and Argentina - one of the largest in world. Why not travel with us to these amazing places and experience South America for yourself?

There is only a 3 to 5 hour time difference so you can enjoy long haul travel without the jetlag. The vast majority of the continent is located on or below the equator, which makes South America a fantastic all year round destination, especially during the dark Irish winter. Escape to the white sand beaches of northern Brazil and enjoy its brilliant sunshine and exotic mix of African and Brazilian heritage or explore the wild wonders of Patagonia.

As with travel to many destinations around the world, it is wise to seek advice regarding inoculations prior to your journey. This is especially

important when visiting the Amazon jungle and other tropical areas. The Andes stretch the length of the continent and many attractions are above 2000m. If you have any concerns about altitude sickness, seek medical advice before travel and allow yourself an extra day to acclimatise, e.g. when you are visiting Machu Picchu.

Experience the amazing warmth and friendliness of the people and their renowned hospitality, but when visiting the major cities like Buenos Aires, Rio de Janeiro or Lima it is of course advisable to take the same safety precautions you would take in any big city.

As this is such a vast continent, the easiest and most efficient mode of travel between the various destinations is by air which will give you the chance to see more of the most remote and beautiful areas in this new world. If you have no local currency when you arrive, hotel porters and taxi drivers happily accept dollar bills, with Ecuador having adopted the US$ as its national currency. Incidentally the Euro is easily exchanged in banks and airport kiosks. South America is a wonderful destination full of exciting new possibilities and amazing experiences that will leave you looking at the world through new eyes as you discover the natural wealth and cultural diversity that this exciting continent has to offer.

Nuevo Mundo came into being from our love of the South American continent. Having travelled to several countries there, I know that you too will enjoy this fascinating destination.

I am sure you will enjoy our brochure as you look through the vibrant images and feast upon their rich colours; the narrative is kept concise and as informative as possible.

Nuevo Mundo strives to make the planning of your journey as simple as possible; the index and pages are colour coded, the five countries are laid out in alphabetical order, each with its own section; and a full six pages are dedicated to the spectacular Galápagos Islands. Within each section you find the basic country information right at the start and on the last pages there are several sample itineraries to whet your appetite. Some of the tour hotels are also shown from our select range. You can have one of these itineraries adapted especially for you or you may prefer to have your own individual travel itinerary completely tailored to your own ideas, suggestions and requirements.

Our Nuevo Mundo programme is aimed at the discerning traveller with an adventurous spirit and a taste for the exotic. Come and explore these five diverse, dynamic and amazing countries with the help of our expert knowledge, advice and service. It is our aim to keep that adventurous spirit alive, to give you a high quality, first class experience and yet ensure great value for money.

At Nuevo Mundo we are delighted to introduce a selection of brand new travel options such as diving in the Galápagos; whale watching in Patagonia; safari tours of Brazil’s Pantanal, the world’s largest wetland; skiing during our summer – from June to October – in world class ski resorts, both in Argentina and in Chile and for the very fit and active there are several spectacular volcanoes and mountains to climb.

And when in Chile do not miss the opportunity to visit Easter Island, the most mysterious island in the world.

We have partnered with individual quality suppliers in each of the countries featured and we will supply you with at least one 24 hr emergency number for each country you are visiting. Due to the great size of this continent your most common mode of travel is by air. Our main airline partners are Iberia Airlines, Aerolineas Argentinas and Lan Chile. You may also like to look at upgrading to business class for far greater comfort on your transatlantic journey. This can be achieved by upgrading your main flight from as little as €525 per person each way; you arrive fresh and can start enjoying everything this colourful and exciting continent has to offer from the moment you arrive.

We have carefully selected high quality products so that you may enjoy South America safe in the knowledge that you are experiencing the best that this fabulous continent has to offer. Each destination is visited on an ongoing basis and we continually assess our programme first hand. Our clients are of the utmost importance and we maintain high standards across our whole programme through consistent and careful research on trips, tours, guides, accommodation and transportation by air, land and water.

South America is a land of diverse, untamed natural beauty and friendly, hospitable people. A true feast for the senses, this captivating continent with its sheer abundance of experiences will ensure you have the trip of a lifetime - each and every time.

Argentina Land of Silver

Travel to the ends of the Earth to wild and wonderful Argentina, the “Land of Silver”. Now more accessible than ever before Argentina offers a true escape for the more adventurous traveller. From the tropical forests and luxuriant vegetation to the north, the exciting and cosmopolitan capital city of Buenos Aires, or the windswept and spectacular scenery of Patagonia, this land of contrasts offers a wealth of possibilities to even the most discerning traveller.

Argentina is the world’s eighth largest nation, but with only 36 million people – one third of whom live in and around Buenos Aires – it is one of the least densely populated countries in the world. Because of its immense size it has a variety of natural landscapes and a dynamic cultural heritage to match. The world famous and exciting city of Buenos Aires is a must. The birthplace of the tango and the fi nal resting place of Eva ‘Evita’ Perón, this romantic city will enthral and captivate you with the warmth of its people. To the north east are the dense forests of Misiones province and one of the most spectacular sights in South America, Iguazú Falls. Stretching over almost 3km these waterfalls are an unforgettable reminder of nature’s sheer power and beauty. To the south are the seemingly never-ending open spaces of Patagonia and the

Pampas where you too can become a gaucho on one of the many ranches that encompass this vast land. High in the Andes to the east is the world class ski resort of Bariloche with luxury accommodation and spectacular scenery. The further south you travel the closer you get to South America’s southernmost point. A land of wild open spaces and breathtaking vistas, glaciers and jagged mountain peaks, Patagonia offers adventurous travellers the chance to experience one of the last true wildernesses. Whether you prefer to marvel at the power and might of humpback and killer whales or to track the footprints of the elusive puma in the foothills of the Andes, nature is all around you. Then at the end of the world is Tierra del Fuego (Land of Fire) and the city of Ushuaia, the gateway to Antarctica. A land of immense contrasts and breathtaking beauty, the trip of a lifetime awaits you in Argentina each and every time.

Patagonia & the Pampas Literally travel to the ends of the Earth and witness the breathtaking vistas and extraordinary wildlife of Patagonia. Or you can learn to ride with genuine gauchos on vast old estancias. For adventurers it’s a planet’s “edge” destination—nature in its wildest form.

Good time to visit: November to April

SightsBecause of its remoteness and inaccessibility, Patagonia has always been a place of myths and legends. But now you can follow in the footsteps of the illusive puma at the foothills of the Andes, or witness the power of humpback and killer whales in the wild South Atlantic Ocean. The Valdés Peninsula is a special treat for lovers of wildlife with the best whale watching opportunities in the world. Accessible by air, this enormous region south of Buenos Aires province features a glacier-dotted mountainous interior, unique coastal wildlife and immense national parks deep in the southern Andes. Few other places afford you the opportunity to see gleaming blue glaciers and spectacular mountain scenery. Or if some skiing is what you are looking for you can ski the Southern Andes from June to September at Bariloche which offers excellent sports facilities and spectacular scenery. Then continue south to marvel at the Perito Moreno Glacier, a spectacular 60m high river of steep, jagged blue ice. Finally a trip to the ends of the Earth, and a stay at a top class hotel at the most southerly town on the planet, Ushuaia on the island of Tierra del Fuego (Land of Fire). Here you can enjoy the spectacular mountain scenery, play golf or go skiing in this attractive resort town. Ushuaia is also famous for being the main gateway to Antarctica, with regular crossings to the “White Continent.”

Iguazú FallsTravel back in time to the region of the first Jesuit missions and the raw natural power of one of the great natural wonders of South America, Iguazú Falls. The roar of the falls can be heard throughout the dense jungle that blankets the surrounding area and alive with amazing flora and fauna. It is truly a sight to behold.

Good time to visit: March to November

SightsDeclared a World Natural Patrimony of Humanity by UNESCO, the falls are one of the top attractions on a visit to Argentina. Iguazú Falls have also featured in several movies, most notably ‘The Mission’ in 1986. Way south in this Argentinean province of Misiones are the splendid church ruins of the famous Jesuit missions who first arrived here in the 16th century. Stretching almost 3 km along the river of the same name the spectacular Iguazú Falls carry one of the largest volumes of water in the world. Made up of some 275 individual cascades these beautiful Falls will take a full day to explore along the steel walkways, which wind through and over the tumbling waters. One part of this enormous waterfall is a single plunge deep into a gorge known as the Garganta del Diablo or “Devil’s Throat”. Visiting the Brazilian side of the Falls allows you to witness this magnificent thundering cascade from below; climbing to the restaurant at the top you can enjoy the fabulous panoramas of the Argentinean part of the Falls. From this spectacular setting you can easily continue your South American adventure into Brazil, with frequent air connections to Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo. To get a real taste of the jungle you can stay in a lodge in the surrounding lush sub-tropical rainforest. Only two hours by air from Buenos Aires, a trip to Iguazú makes for an unforgettable experience.

Golf ClubsRanelagh Golf ClubThis curiously Irish name is taken from the very land in which the course is located on, once owned by the English Duke of Ranelagh. Here the big hitters can show off, but good control as well as distance is needed to avoid the challenging rough and the long tree-lined fairways.

Olivos Golf ClubA highly regarded course and short-listed for the 2000 World Cup, this course is one of the most traditional and famous in the country. With well maintained fairways and mature trees this picturesque yet challenging course is a must for any golfer visiting Argentina.

San Andrés Golf clubDesigned in 1909, this fine English-style course has impeccable, narrow fairways and is located in a beautiful area outside Buenos Aires. The greens in general are not too big and are quite fast and therefore call for a precision approach. This wooded course has only one water feature, and calls for straight, accurate driving.

Club de Campo Los Pingüinos Initially a grand 19th century ranch this is one of the newest clubs around Buenos Aires, yet makes a fine addition to the more established courses in the area. This challenging course offers great variety of play with trees, water features and a selection of bunkers.

NortheastSavour this new and exciting destination by relaxing on tropical white sand beaches, watching amazing displays of the martial art capoeira in the cobbled-streets of Salvador or join in on one of the most exciting Carnaval celebrations in Brazil... the Northeast has a lot to offer.

Good time to visit: all year round

SightsSet in the magnificent All Saints Bay, Salvador in the state of Bahía, has an electric ambience you feel from the moment you arrive. Brazil’s first capital (from 1549 to 1763), it is full of beautifully preserved colonial buildings and has a vibrant cultural and artistic scene. The city is a tantalising mix of what you expect from Brazil and a vibrancy that is unmistakably African. The martial art of capoeira is a sight to behold as it is practised everywhere from the streets and squares to the beachfront and all along the palm-fringed coastline. Eating out is one of the many pleasures the Northeast has to offer, and the fresh local cuisine comida baiana is deservedly famous. To the north lie spectacular white sand beaches around Fortaleza and the historic colonial city of Olinda that merges every year with neighbouring Recife for one of the most exciting Carnaval celebrations on the continent. Meanwhile, off the coast lie the remote and spectacular islands of Fernando de Noronha. Once visited by Charles Darwin, it is a haven for a wealth of marine life and the islands are deservedly considered to be one of the great diving locations on the planet. This exotic, sun-kissed area of Brazil offers yet another side to this dynamic and exciting country.

ChileLand of Fire and Ice

If variety is what you are looking for then look no further than Chile, Land of Fire and Ice. Stretching along 4000km of the Pacifi c coast of South America, this country has a range of climates and landscapes that will take your breath away. Few countries can match the astounding contrasts of scenery, ranging from the driest desert in the world to the immense ice fi elds and glaciers of the south. Towering over it all is the long spine of the Andes, punctuated by colossal peaks and smouldering volcanoes.

One of the most extraordinary looking countries in the world, Chile is a geographical oddity offering a huge range of amazing landscapes, climates and peoples ranging from the dry and arid Atacama Desert in the north to the immense glaciers of Patagonia. Spread between these extremes is a kaleidoscope of panoramas, taking in sun-baked scrubland, lush vineyards and orchards, virgin temperate rainforest, dramatic fjords and wild Patagonian steppes. Chile is also one of the safest and most affl uent countries in South America. It has a seemingly endless number of outdoor activities, whether it is jeep rides, bird-watching, skiing, horse trekking, wine tours, hiking, volcano climbing, sea kayaking, white-water rafting or fl y-fi shing.

From its capital Santiago at the foot of the Andes you can ski some of the best slopes on the continent or explore Chile’s world famous vineyards. To the north lies the strikingly beautiful Atacama Desert, the driest place on the planet with an astounding variety of moonscapes to be enjoyed. Although some areas have never seen a drop of rain others contain amazing wildlife. From here, travelling south to the Lake District around Puerto Montt, you can explore the forests, lakes, fjords and spectacular volcanoes in the area. But no trip to Chile would be complete without a visit to the magnifi cent Torres del Paine National Park. Located in the very south of Patagonia, these soaring towers of rock and ice are also home to guanacos, condors and the stealthy and elusive Andean puma. This land of immense natural beauty is perfect if you are looking for adventure and the great outdoors.

Santiago

Santiago and AroundSet on a wide plain near the foot of the Andes, the city of Santiago is set in a spectacular location. This bustling city of 5 million people is your gateway to Chile and the surrounding area offering a wide selection of activities in beautiful countryside.

Good time to visit: April to November

SightsWhilst in historic Santiago, you can experience the lively music scene, museums, and a huge range of restaurants and cafes. Close by, skiers and snowboarders can take advantage of the four world-class ski areas. Multi-day trips are best spent at the world famous Portillo resort near the Argentinean border just to the north of Santiago. From here you can traverse the Andes into Argentina and explore Aconcagua Provincial Park and marvel at the highest mountain in the Western Hemisphere – Cerro Aconcagua (6960m). There is more top class skiing to be had on the Argentinean side of the border as well as spectacular mountain scenery, dotted with dramatic volcanic peaks. And after all this high altitude adventure make time to sample Chile’s world famous vineyards with a wine tour and then relax on a day trip at Chile’s most popular coastal resort Viña del Mar. All of this can be experienced within close proximity to Santiago.

Chile

Atacama DesertOne of the most barren yet beautiful areas of Chile is the arid north and at its heart is the Atacama Desert, the driest place on earth. It is a place of stark natural beauty and amazing sights. Unlike anything you have ever seen before this desert region holds some superb attractions and is a true highlight on a visit to Chile.

Good time to visit: all year round

SightsYou can reach the desert by flying to Calama and then travel by road to San Pedro. Located deep in the heart of the desert this charming oasis town makes for an ideal base to explore the area. Some of the planet’s most provocative landscapes ring San Pedro, enticing thousands of tourists a year to its dusty little heart. One of the most unusual landscapes and one of the country’s highlights is the altiplano with its dazzling lakes, salt flats and volcanoes. The largest salt flat in the country lies just to the south of San Pedro and is home to a large colony of flamingos. Making for an unforgettable early morning excursion is a visit to the famous El Tatio geysers, that lie to the north and the aptly named desertscape of Valle de la Luna (Valley of the Moon). Best seen at sunset, the valley is transformed into a spellbinding palette of golds and reds, making for a magical end to a day in the desert. The area is surprisingly abundant in wildlife with thousands of llamas and alpacas, vicuñas, flamingos and condors, offering a wonderful natural spectacle at high altitude.

Chile

The South and Torres del PaineSituated in wild and windswept southern Patagonia and rising above the brown pampa grassland are the spectacular peaks of Torres del Paine, one of the world’s stunning geographical features. Discover this and many more amazing sights on the adventure of a lifetime to Chile’s southernmost regions.

Good time to visit: October to March

SightsFlying south out of Santiago you will arrive in the Lake District port city of Puerto Montt. This is the land of the Mapuche Indians and is a region of lush farmland, dense forest, snow-capped volcanoes and deep freshwater lakes. Venture south on an excursion to Lake Ensenada and the surrounding snow-capped volcanic peaks. Then explore the neighbouring island of Chiloé and its beautiful wooden churches. You can then travel to Torres del Paine National Park and wander around the “giant’s castles” and “demon’s lairs” of this mountainous region. Here you can explore and savour the view of Lago Pehoé, Los Cuernos del Paine (Horns of Paine) and the Torres del Paine (Towers of Paine), the impossibly steep towers after which the park is named. Blessed with amazing natural landmarks, the park is also home to herds of guanacos (related to the Peruvian llama), the ostrich-like ñandú, the Andean condor and the stealthy and elusive puma, Patagonia’s largest predator. Choose from a fine selection of luxurious, beautifully designed lodges in spectacular locations close to the park.

Easter Island (Rapa Nui)Set adrift in the South Pacific Ocean lies one of the most isolated and mysterious islands on the planet. For thousands of years the people of this tiny speck of land developed a unique and dynamic culture, whose crowning achievement were the bizarre Moai, Easter Island’s massive stone statues.

Good time to visit: all year round

SightsFor hundreds of years this island lay cut off from the rest of the world, and from this isolation arose one of the most extraordinary feats of ingenuity, art, and obsessive mining and carving that has ever been seen. The magnificent moai, for which the island is most famous, number an astounding 887 statues and some can weigh up to 25 tonnes with intricate carvings and detailing and are spread out across the island in groups or as lonely figures on deserted hillsides. Learn about this fascinating culture in a wild and beautiful setting with its rolling green hills and peaceful white sand beaches. Although the climate here is subtropical you will notice a distinct lack of trees and vegetation as most were cleared by the islanders generations ago so as to fulfil their obsessive compulsions to appease the gods. With a choice of great hotels in beautiful surroundings you can now enjoy this unique experience for yourself.

Skiing

Sea Lion

Made famous by the indelible Charles Darwin, these unique islands are home to a myriad of amazing creatures from the giant tortoise and marine iguanas to blue footed boobies and giant whale sharks. Marvel at nature’s diversity and the spectacular volcanic scenery with an unforgettable cruise through the islands.

SightsBest described as the wildlife experience of a lifetime, these enchanted islands are truly a unique experience with a dynamic and bewildering array of land and sea creatures. Ecuador’s greatest attraction, the archipelago is situated almost 1000km west from the coast of Ecuador offering visitors a unique experience unlike any other. Composed of fi ve main islands and many smaller islands and islets, they are a natural haven for wildlife, and its striking landscapes are a testament to the archipelago’s explosive volcanic origins. The islands are home to the famous giant tortoise, the oldest living creature on the planet, the amazing vegetarian marine iguana, the Galapagos penguin, waved albatross, sea turtles and sea lions, to name but a few. The majority of these species are found nowhere else in the world, and have evolved over

thousands of years to become such unique and adaptable species, as to confi rm Darwin’s theories of evolution. Soon after his famous voyage in 1835, the islands were declared a national natural treasure by the people of Ecuador and henceforth tourist numbers have been managed very carefully to ensure the survival of this delicate ecosystem and its species. For those who appreciate nature and amazing wildlife, a trip to the Galapagos Islands is one the world’s most unforgettable and rewarding experiences. Once here, you can travel through the islands in complete comfort and style on a luxurious ocean yacht.

Amazing WildlifeGalapagos TortoiseYou can’t go to these islands without falling in love with these gentle, pre-historic creatures. All turtles found on the islands belong to the group Geochelone elephantopus. They are divided into 14 sub-species (three of which are extinct), differentiated by the form and size of their shell as well as neck and extremities.

Marine IguanasYou will see these creatures everywhere the moment you arrive. This is the only lizard in the world that lives in the ocean and the three species seen on the islands are endemic. Marvel at how they change colour and how these cold-blooded creatures sunbathe to regulate their body temperature.

PenguinsThis is the only penguin found in warm equatorial waters. It’s the most northerly penguin in the world, as the rest are found in the Southern Hemisphere. Isla Isabela and Fernandina have the most penguins, but if you’re lucky, you might catch a glimpse of a small colony at Bartolomé.

SantiagoLocated just to the northwest of Santa Cruz, Santiago offers visitors the chance to view wonderful groups of fur sea lions. Once thought to have become extinct a hundred years ago, they now number almost 40,000 in the entire archipelago.

San CristóbalThe most easterly of all the islands, you can explore dramatic volcanic landscapes as well as beautiful cloud forests, which are home to the famous giant tortoises. The island is also home to the unique red-footed booby. There is also a fantastic newly-opened interpretation centre which is a wonderful addition to the island to enhance your experience.

IsabelaThe largest and most volcanically active of all the islands, Isabela also supports five subspecies of tortoise – one for each of its five volcanoes. There are great opportunities to view humpback whales breaching just offshore as well as sharks, stingrays and turtles.

FloreanaAn ideal place for snorkelling, Floreana has beautiful clear blue waters full of amazing sea creatures. The island is also home to Post Office Bay, where 18th century whalers used a barrel as an unofficial mail drop, and the custom continues to this day between Galapagos visitors!

Nazca Lines

Reed boat, Lake Titicaca

Lake TiticacaAt an altitude of over 3,800m (the highest navigable lake in the world) a visit to Lake Titicaca and a boat trip to its unique floating islands is a must. Whilst there, visit the pre-Inca tribe of the Uros, who have lived on these waters for over a thousand years.

Good time to visit: April to September

SightsPeru and Bolivia share the lake, which is 3,500 square miles (9000 km2), and about 850 feet (250 m) deep in the centre. There are about forty of these floating islands which are made and re-made from the totora reed which provide shelter, sustenance and transportation for their residents, the Uros tribe. The Uros islands lie among stands of reeds in shallow water at the western end close to the Peruvian port of Puno and have been here for around a thousand years, which actually pre-dates the Inca civilization. According to their legends they existed before the sun, when the earth was still dark and cold. Because of their simple and precarious lifestyle, the Incas thought them worth little and accordingly taxed them very little, allowing them to live their simple lives undisturbed for centuries. Yet in end, the Uros, with their basic reed homes, outlasted the mighty Incas with their huge stone temples and mountaintop enclaves. Come and experience this unique culture for yourself and witness the splendid colours of this natural marvel, perched atop South America’s magnificent Andes Mountains.

Lake Titicaca

Lima & Nazca LinesLima, which hugs the Pacific coastline of Peru, is a city with beautiful colonial architecture and a magnificent cathedral. And just a little south in the high dry deserts you can marvel at the strangely mysterious Nazca Lines from the air they are a true ancient marvel.

Good time to visit: November to April

SightsIn Lima, founded in the 1500’s by conquistador Francisco Pizarro, you can spend the day exploring the city’s colonial and modern sights. Visit the Plaza Mayor, City Hall, the baroque San Francisco Church, and the stunning cathedral, which dates back to 1555. Then in the evening savour the delights of the local cuisine at Casa Garcia Alverado, a private colonial home built in 1912. South of the city in the province of Ica high on the desert plateau are the mysterious Nazca Lines. These are most likely a type of agricultural calendar to help regulate the planting and harvesting of crops, or perhaps some of the straight lines served as ancient sacred paths connecting huacas, or power spots. Regardless of why they were made, the Lines, with their beautiful animal designs and measuring up to 300m across, are among the strangest and most unforgettable sights in the country. From here the rest of Peru awaits you. To the east lies the Andes and the historic monuments of Cuzco and Machu Picchu, and the spectacular Amazon jungle.

The Organiser shall notify the Consumer within seven days of any cancellation or curtailment necessitated by the foregoing circumstances. (ii) The Consumer shall inform the Organiser or the Retailer (as appropriate, in light of the Organiser’s instructions) of his decision to accept the alteration to the contract or to withdraw from the contract, in writing, within 7 days from the date upon which the Consumer was notified of a circumstance falling within Clause 14(d)(i) Where the Consumer confirms acceptance of the alteration to the contract, the contract between the Organiser and the Consumer shall thereby be amended to include such alteration. (iv) In the event that the offer of an alternative holiday is not accepted by the Consumer, in writing, within such time as shall be determined by the Organiser, from the date of the offer of the alternative holiday the Organiser shall assume that the Consumer has declined such offer and the Consumer shall only be entitled to return of payments made. (e) Further, where the Organiser cancels, alters, changes or curtails the holiday as contemplated in Clause 14(d)(i) the
