ThesisI became interested in President Lyndon

B. Johnson my junior year of high school. I had a substitute teacher that emphasized a lot on LBJ and said how he did all the work Kennedy laid out. Going to catholic school my entire life I always heard how great Kennedy was, but never on how overlooked Johnson was. He did many great things during his presidency, even though how I have been Republican my entire life I really admire all the work Johnson did and how good he was at convincing politicians to give into him.

Early Political Career• After teaching Johnson started his political career by campaigning for Senator Welly Hopkins

• Johnson was then elected speaker of the "Little Congress," a group of Congressional aides, where he cultivated Congressmen, newspapermen and lobbyists

• Johnson then started to meet aides of Roosevelt, and even VP John GarnerIn 1935, he was appointed head of the Texas National Youth Administration

House of Representatives• In 1937 Johnson won a

seat in Texas’ Congressional 10th District

• He was then named to the Naval Affairs Committee

US Naval Reserves• In 1940 Johnson was

promoted to the position of Lieutenant Commander in the Naval Reserves

• Johnson then reported to Gen MacArthur in Australia

• In 1942 Johnson’s plane was shot down and he was the only survivor, MacArthur gave him a Silver Star for this

Senate- In 1948 Johnson ran for Senate for a 2nd Time and won- Johnson rose through the Senate fast was well like for being able to get older senators to like him- in 1951 his was named to the position of Senate majority whip-in 1952 the Republicans regained majority in the Senate, Johnson was then named Senate Minority Leader

Page 12: Lyndon b johnson

Vice Presidency• In 1960 Johnson ran a failed

campaign for presidency

• He was eventually named the running mate of JFK

• Johnson and Kennedy did not get along very well, Johnson was only named his running mate because of his popularity

• Kennedy disliked how often Johnson talked to the media and how honest he was with them

• Robert Kennedy and Johnson especially did not get along, and Robert wanted him gone, but Kennedy realized how important it would be to have his name next to his on the ballot when reelection came around

Page 13: Lyndon b johnson

Inauguration and Assassination• On November 22,

1963, President Kennedy was shot while in his motorcade in Dallas, TX

• Johnson was then sworn into office two hours later on board of Air Force 1

• They did not have a bible on hand so they improvised with a Catholic missel that was in Kennedy’s desk

Page 14: Lyndon b johnson

Civil Rights Act• Immediately upon his return to

Washington Johnson gave his first speech stating that the best way to remember Kennedy is not a touching eulogy but by passing his Civil Right’s Act

• When Kennedy tried to pass it through Congress it faced huge opposition

• Johnson started to get some sympathy votes, and eventually named his rival Robert Kennedy to be in charge of getting it passed

• After the bill passed through the House it was sent through the Senate, where the opposing senators only choice was filibuster

• After LBJ convinced Republican leader Everett Dirkson to support the bill it passed through congress with an overwhelming vote of 71-29

• On July 2, Johnson signed and fortified the Civil Rights Act of 1964 with many people there including Rev. Martin Luther King Jr

Page 15: Lyndon b johnson

1964 Election• In 1964 Johnson was

optimistic about running for reelection, however, he knew if he wanted kennedy’s Bills to pass he would do it better than Bobby Kennedy

• Johnson was named the Democratic Nominee running against Arizona Senator Goldwater

• Johnson won overwhelmingly, however for the first time ever the Democrats lost the entire south due to the passing of the Civil Rights Act

Page 16: Lyndon b johnson

Carrying on the Legacy of JFK

• Even though LBJ and JFK did not get along he did admire JFK

• LBJ didn't have to come up with many ideas because he continued a lot of kennedy’s work

• Along with Civil Rights he passed along kennedy’s Voting Rights, Immigration, and other ideas

Page 18: Lyndon b johnson

Voting Rights, Immigration, and Space Program• After passing the Civil Rights Act

MLK went down south and led Marches from Selma to Montgomery

• This led LBJ to pass the Voting Rights Act in 1965

• In 1965 Johnson passed the Immigration and Nationality Act of 1965 which removed national origin quotas, this doubled the influx of immigrants, mostly Asain and Mexican

• Johnson fully supported the space program, sending them lots of money, and knew government intervention would hinder the space program so he trusted the scientists to do all the work, Johnson also named the Florida NASA complex after Kennedy

Page 19: Lyndon b johnson

Education, War on Poverty, Healthcare Reform

• Johnson went to a State funded college and knew that was the only reason how he got out of poverty himself

• Education Reform was also the original reason he went into politics, he eventually

• Johnson got Congress to pass a bill to double the yearly budget for education

• During his term Poverty went down from 23-12%, this was helped by the programs he created such as Food Stamps, Work study, and Head Start

• Johnson Also created a program called Medicare

Page 20: Lyndon b johnson

Vietnam War• As Johnson subscribed the the theory of the Domino Effect he felt America needed to quickly end Communism in Vietnam

• However, as the war went on Johnson couldn't stand seeing the number of casualties go up year after year

• Johnson then started to take heat from the public and media saying that he was a man who didn't support the war, but was keeping our troops over there, regardless of the countless trips he made to visit the troops

• College kids started to refuse to go to the war and protests started to break out

• Many believe this was the reason he did not win the Democratic Nomination in 1968

Page 21: Lyndon b johnson

The Man and Personality of LBJ

• LBJ was an interesting man, and didn’t act very presidential when he wasn't in front of the media

• The advisor of his that he listened to the most was his wife lady bird

• Johnson actively spent time at his ranch in texas where he invited many politicians

• He was commonly known as pretending the brakes were out on his car, scaring those with him and driving into a lake, the passengers then learned the car was amphibious

• Johnson was also a very forgiving man, gave out over 1100 pardons during his term, 20% of his requests

Page 22: Lyndon b johnson

How LBJ fit into everyday life• Not only did LBJ fit into everyday in

the 60’s but he also had a lasting legacy that effects many people today

• Johnson increased greatly under the Johnson administration, mostly Asians and Mexicans, looks like Trump’s been blaming the wrong president.

• He also created programs that affect every day life, such as the headstart programs, which are big in Alton, and Food Stamps

• I would also say that Johnson is the biggest reason that minorities and the poorer people lean more Democrat than they do Republican

Page 23: Lyndon b johnson

what was unique about LBJ• What was unique about

LBJ was that he really hated the job of being president

• so many people claim that they want to be president because the country needs them, Johnson realized that he was not necessarily the president America needed, but Kennedy was, and he knew he could carry out Kennedy’s policies

Page 24: Lyndon b johnson

What would I do if i lived in this period• If I lived in this period I’m

not sure if I would’ve have liked Johnson at the time

• Also being 20 years old I most likely would have been drafted into the military and fighting in Vietnam, I would have stood up and fought for my country when the call of duty came, instead of staying back in college and protesting and doing drugs

Page 25: Lyndon b johnson

How has the view of obj changed over the years

• I believe that Johnson is a President whose memory is slowly fading away

• Many people believe Kennedy did all the things that Johnson himself actually did, sure kennedy was progressive for his era, but johnson was the one who did all the work, also with the space program too

Page 26: Lyndon b johnson

New Information of lbj• Not much information has

come out on LBJ since his passing

• His daughters have gotten into politics some, but nothing major

• After his presidency Johnson knew his days were numbered and went back to smoking

• He eventually died in 1973, upon his death there were no living former presidents
