Patrick A. Tutwiler, PhD Superintendent of Schools
Dear Lynn Families,
The temporary closure of schools has been difficult, and we are all trying our best to stay
safe and well. Teachers, students and their families have been working together to continue the
learning process, but we know this has not been easy. Because of this, the Lynn Public Schools
has developed a learning plan to give everyone a shared process that includes a suggested
schedule and a menu of learning activities for each week.
It is our hope that these learning plans will help our students to keep using the skills they
have been developing throughout the school year. It was also our goal that the activities would
be interesting and could be done at home or safely outside. If families have students in more
than one grade, the activities are connected to themes that are the same for all students.
Within this packet, you will find:
A suggested schedule
Academic learning plans that contain:
o Menus of activities of varying difficulty
o Materials related to activities
o Reference sheets
Creative learning plans that contain:
o Menus of activities for art, music, physical education,
and social-emotional learning
Teachers will continue to reach out to students and families to help support students as
they continue to work on the skills they have built during this school year. They are available to
answer any questions you have, and they will love to hear about the work students are creating
through these activities.
The most important thing to Lynn Public Schools is that we stay connected, and we stay
safe and well while school is closed. As your partner in education, and your community partner,
we hope these learning plans will help us proceed during the school closure.
Respectfully,
Patrick Tutwiler, PhD

Respetuosamente,
Patrick Tutwiler, PhD
LYNN PUBLIC SCHOOLS RECOMMENDED REMOTE LEARNING SCHEDULE RECOMENDACIÓN DE PROGRAMA DE APRENDIZAJE A DISTANCIA PARA LAS ESCUELUAS PÚBLICAS
DE LYNN These are recommendations from The Department of Elementary and Secondary Education on remote learning:
• We recommend that districts support students to engage in meaningful and productive learning for approximately half the length of a regular school day. We expect this learning to take place via a combination of educator provided resources and student self-directed learning. • We strongly recommend that districts and schools focus on reinforcing skills already taught this school year and applying and deepening these skills. We recognize that in some cases, teachers and students may wish to continue with new material, particularly at the high school level. In these cases, districts should consider equity of access and support for all students. • The individual student experience will vary depending on student age, individual and family needs, access and capacity for remote learning (including access to technology and internet), and the ongoing health of students, families, and staff.

Family Study of Feet and Shoes
Directions:
1. Spread a piece of paper or paper bag on the floor.
2. Have one or two family members take off their shoes
and socks. Spray the bottom of their feet with water.
Have them stand on the paper bag for 15 seconds.
3. Trace the wet footprints.
4. Read the attached Web article. Label each footprint
to tell whether it shows a high arch, an average arch, or
a flat foot.
On a blank piece of paper choose 1 or more of the writing tasks below.
Draw and label each family members footprint. Tell what kind of arch they have.
Compare two different family members foot shape? How are they the same? Different?
Why is it helpful to know about arches?

Here, TFK Kid Reporter Raunak Singh, from Fair Lawn, New Jersey, shares his thoughts.
COVID-19 is caused by an infectious coronavirus. Many people have already gotten sick.
The word corona, translated from Latin, means crown. If we don’t work together to fight its
spread, the virus will be “crowned” the victor. But you can help us win! Take steps like washing
your hands well. And the less you travel, the safer the world will be. As you stay at home, think
of it as care-for-your-family time.
Here are some good activities to try:
Play with your pets. Read a book.
Go for a walk with your family. Call or FaceTime a friend.
Play ball with a sibling. Learn on the Internet.
Ride your bike in your neighborhood. Play a classic board game.
Draw. Relax.
Have you seen people helping each other in your neighborhood? Someone picking up
someone else’s groceries? Or people giving things to those who aren’t able to find them at the
store? A few days ago, as I was going to check the mail, one of my mom’s friends called me.
She told me that if my family was running out of any supplies, she’d be happy to lend some to
us. I said we had enough supplies, but I was touched.
That’s the good side of this pandemic: People are becoming more sympathetic to each
other. When my mom was picking up supplies at our local ShopRite, we saw a man helping an
elderly woman carry her bags. And I read in the news that two young cellists, ages 7 and 9,
played a short concert—at a safe distance—for their 78-year-old neighbor.
So try to be kind in your community. If we work together, maintain safe practices, and
keep ourselves busy at home, we can fight this little microbe!

Kid Heroes for the Planet
April 17, 2020 Constance Gibbs, Karena Phan
Earth Day is April 22. It’s a day when people around the world work to help the planet. But many people, including kids, care deeply about protecting the Earth and its inhabitants every day. TIME for Kids spoke with a few of them. Read here about five Kid Heroes for the Planet. Maybe they’ll inspire you to take action, too!
Speaking Out
Jaysa Hunter-Mellers ,14, is from Bridgeport, Connecticut. In 2016, she spoke at Bridgeport City Hall to ask leaders to shut the last coal power plant in her state. It was two miles from Jaysa’s house.
“I had an asthma attack when I was 6,” Jaysa told TFK. So she and her mom researched how coal gas can cause and worsen health problems. “I didn’t think that people would listen to me because I was a kid,” Jaysa says. But the company that owns the coal plant later said it would close it.
“I learned to speak to my local government at a young age,” Jaysa says. Now she wants to teach others to speak up too. —By Constance Gibbs
Helping Butterflies
When Aiden Wang was 6, he learned about monarch butterflies. His teacher explained that they’re in trouble. Monarchs need milkweed plants to survive. But milkweed is disappearing because of weed killers called herbicides. So Aiden started growing it at his home in West Windsor Township, New Jersey. The insects lay eggs on milkweed. Aiden cares for the caterpillars. He lets them go when they turn into butterflies.
Aiden’s now 13. He thinks others should grow milkweed, too. “It might really help,” he says. —By Karena Phan https://www.timeforkids.com/g34/kid-heroes-planet-4/

How to make a no-sew face mask
Learn how to make two types of simple, no-sew face masks. Graphics: Elena Hartley, Newsela staff. Head silhouettes from CDC. Originalbandana pattern from Paul Brennan, altered by Newsela staff.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is a government group. It studies public health.
Doctors and scientists work for this group. They have made a new suggestion. They say Americans
should wear fabric face masks when they go outside. Going to the grocery store or pharmacy? Put
on a mask first, the group says.
There is one problem. Many people do not have face masks at home. Luckily, you can make one. A
cloth face covering is pretty easy to make. Wearing one makes a difference. It helps prevent the
spread of the coronavirus.
Not everyone who has this virus feels sick. They may spread the virus without knowing they have
it. Cloth masks can help. They limit the spread of germs.
Wearing a mask is helpful. However, wearing one does not mean you can skip social-distancing
rules. You should still follow these rules. Your state leaders have probably set guidelines. They may
have closed schools and businesses where you live. They may tell you not to meet in big groups.
These rules are still important to follow.

Mask Option 1: T-Shirt Mask
Supplies Needed:
1 clean t-shirt
1 pair of scissors
1 ruler (optional)
1 pencil, pen or piece of chalk
Step 1: Measure Your Shirt
Grab your ruler. Measure about 7-8 inches from the
bottom of your shirt. (If you don't have a ruler, try an
unsharpened pencil. A wooden pencil is about 7-8
inches long.) Draw a line across your shirt. Use pencil,
pen or chalk. This will help you make a straight cut.
Step 2: Cut Your T-Shirt
Now you will need scissors. Cut along the line you
drew. When you are done you will have a large piece
of cloth. It should be sewn on both sides. When you
separate the fabric in the middle, it forms an oval.
Step 3:
Cut Out
A
Square
For The
Mask
Grab your
ruler (or
pencil)
again.
Lay out
your cut
fabric.
Make
sure it is flat. There should be a seam on either side. Take up the right side of the T-shirt. Using the
ruler, measure out a rectangle. It should be 6 inches across. The middle should be 5-6 inches high.
(If you're using a pencil, measure a rectangle that is slightly smaller than the pencil on each side.)
Leave at least half an inch on both sides of the rectangle. Those will be your straps.
Step 4: Cut The Mask Straps
Unfold your shirt. You should have a larger square of fabric with two connected bands. Now you
will make the mask straps. Simply cut along the seam. This will separate the straps.
This article is available at 5 reading levels at https://newsela.com.
Step 5: Try On Your Mask!
Now it's time to try it on! Tie the fabric ties around
your head. Tie the top set at the back of your head.
The straps should go above your ears. Tie the bottom
set of ties at the back of your head. The straps should
go under your ears. Adjust the mask until it fits. You
want it to sit very close to your face. It should not be
too tight, though.
Mask Option 2: Bandana Mask
Supplies Needed:
1 bandana or a large t-shirt. You'll need a square of
fabric. It should be 20 inches long and 20 inches wide.
If you don't have a ruler, use a chair to measure. Your fabric should be able to fully cover the seat
of a chair.
1 clean coffee filter
2 hair ties or elastics
1 pair of scissors
1 ruler (optional)
Step 1: Cut Your Coffee Filter
Take out a coffee filter. Lay it flat. Cut off the bottom
section. Leave at least half the filter on top.
Step 2: Place The Filter
Lay your fabric out flat. The inside of the mask should
be facing up. Find the middle of your fabric by folding
it in half. Then, open it up again. Place the filter in the
center of the fabric.
Step 3:
Fold
The
Fabric
Fold the
fabric in
thirds.
You want
to fold it around the coffee filter. Make sure the filter is fully covered by the fabric. You don't want
it to fall out.
Step 4: Add The Elastics
This article is available at 5 reading levels at https://newsela.com.
Now grab your elastic bands. Place both around the folded bandana. They should be about 6
inches apart. There should be some fabric poking through the elastics. Fold that fabric toward the
middle. Then tuck the fabric around the elastic bands.
Step 5: Try On Your Mask!
Time to
try it on!
Place the
elastic
ties
around
your ears.
Then
adjust the
fabric in
the front
of your
face. Your
nose and
chin must be fully covered by the fabric. The coffee filter should rest in front of your nose and
mouth.

Give Me 10 Players: Groups of two or more
Materials: Number cards or deck of cards with the face cards (J, Q, K) removed, Ace (A) equals one
Skill: Number recognition and addition
How to Play: Deal 12 cards face up.
Players take turns finding and removing combinations of cards that add up to 10.
When both the players agree that no more tens are possible, the next 12 cards are dealt face up.

Materials: Number cards or deck of cards with the face cards (J, Q, K) and 10s removed, Ace (A) equals one
Skill: Number recognition, place value, order, and sequencing
How to Play: Players split a deck of cards and simultaneously flip over their top three cards to create a 3-digit number.
Players may move the cards and place in any position of the number they wish.
*Note that you can increase the number of cards to flip if you are working on larger numbers.
Dame 10 Jugadores: Grupos de 2 o mas

The player with the largest product keeps their two cards while the other cards are returned to the bottom of the deck
and new hands are dealt again. Players total the value of the cards they have won until one player is the first to five
hundred (or higher).
How to play for one player game: Turn over two cards and determine the product. Write down the value of the cards.
Keep repeating this until you have added up your value to 500 or higher. Write down how many cards you needed to
reach 500. Play again and try to reach 500 using fewer cards then the game before.
Make the Largest Number/Smallest Number Players: Individual or in groups of two
Materials: Number cards or deck of cards with the face cards (J, Q, K) and 10s removed, Ace (A) equals one
Skill: Place value and comparing numbers
How to Play: Students deal out six cards face down. They can shuffle those cards for an even further mix up, but no
peeking. This is a game of chance and reasoning in which the players are trying to create the largest number possible.
The players must think carefully where to place each card. Once a card is placed it cannot be moved.
The player flips over one card at a time and decides where to place it to form the largest number possible. The throw
away box is for any card they feel will not help in creating a large number; a 2 or 3 for example.
Once a card is placed it cannot be moved. Notice the 5 was placed in the hundreds; to make the largest number
possible, it would have been better placed in the tens place.
Challenge: Play the game again, but this time make the SMALLEST number possible.
How to Play: The player flips over one card at a time and decides where to place it to form the smallest number
possible. The throw away box is for any card they feel will not help in creating a small number; a 8 or 9 for example.
Once a card is placed it cannot be moved. In the example above, the player was able to make the smallest number
possible.
*Note that you can increase the number of cards to flip if you are working on larger numbers.
