Hello Readers,
Last month I said I was going to talk about repeaters, extenders and access
points. The difference between a repeater and an extender is very little as
they both broadcast a signal and both can, if used properly, extend your
WiFi signal. However an access point is quite different in that it doesn't
repeat a signal, it creates a new one.
I received an email from Steve, asking for some advice about how best to
improve the WiFi throughout his house. The problem with some of the
houses in Devon is that they have thick walls and the thicker the wall, the
less the signal can travel. I suggested a couple of things to Steve. He could
hard wire some access points around his home which would create a new
network that would allow a connection. The second was multiple access
points, and third a more powerful router. Hard wiring is complicated
because there are factors like walls, electricity wires, pipes etc. However
this is the most reliable way to do it, the main reason being that wires don’t
generally get confused. With a wifi extender or repeater, the signal that is
already there is simply repeated.
During the configuration of these repeaters or extenders you have the
option to repeat or create a new SSID (network name) so you could have
the network called Home-Internet with a code and another called Home-
Internet-EXT with a different code, or just have one network called Home-
Internet with the same code. The name varies from router to router and
can be changed but I don’t recommend doing this unless you are confident.
A few years ago these devices were very hard to setup and get working as
you had to know details about your IP address, DNS servers and various
other things. These days you can connect to the repeater using a mobile wifi
device and follow the instructions that come up. Normally an inexperienced
person, if they have a good device, can have it running within 10 minutes and
it’s not the case that the more you pay the better the device, as some of the
lower end of the market devices are just as good. You can get a very good
Netgear repeater for less than 20 pounds which isn’t bad for a more reliable
connection in your home!
As always, any questions please let me know, that’s Andy at

Police Notes - July
Summer drink drive campaign Devon and
Cornwall Police have launched their summer drink
drive campaign. Drivers are being reminded that the
consequences of driving under the influence of
alcohol or drugs can be devastating. Throughout the
month-long operation, drivers can expect to be tested if they are involved in a
collision or if stopped for an offence. Routine stop checks will also result in drivers
being tested. The consequence of driving after drinking the night before is a particular
focus of the campaign with many Euro 16 tournament matches kicking off at 8pm.
Don’t invite thieves into your home this summer As we approach the
summer months Lynton Local Policing Team has some top tips to help prevent your
home from being burgled. Keep all windows and doors closed and locked ; Don’t
leave keys in locks especially near letterboxes or cat flaps ; Mark any valuable
equipment appropriately ; If going on holiday ask a trusted neighbour to keep an eye
on your home, collect your mail, newspaper and milk, and draw your curtains ; Don’t
advertise you are away by posting it on social media, burglars use these networks too.
Don’t leave valuables on display in your vehicles Devon and Cornwall Police
are urging the public to be aware of opportunist thieves. Lynton Police said by taking
simple precautions people can help police to reduce crime while preventing the
heartache of losing valuables. Lock your vehicles and close windows ; Leave nothing
on display in your vehicle ; Remove items such as SatNav and cradle, tools, mobiles,
and money ; Property mark and register your valuables at www.immobilise.com

All the money from the sale of the

CAREMOOR FOR EXMOOR.
The Brendon Sing has become
something of an institution on Exmoor. It
is not a club, or a formally organised
event, other than the fact that it happens
on the 3rd Saturday of each month, and
has done for more than 40 years. Local
folk, visitors, and friends who travel often
considerable distances, come to join in.
Over the years many characters have
shared their wares with us, some sadly no
longer here, and the booklet which is for
sale will, I hope, go a way to keep alive a
few of the songs, and the memories.
Thank you.

A 'trow' is a small flat-bottomed craft used in the Bristol Channel
for transferring cargo from ship to shore and vice-versa. When the 'Roaring
Trowmen' hit the 'Bath Hotel’ recently they didn't look particularly flat
bottomed (although I didn't like to look too closely!) but they certainly roared
with great gusto. More gusts of 'O' than you would have thought possible! They
proved to be an amazing A cappella group who presented a selection of sea-
shanty, folk song and plain great song with superb skill and imagination. The
massive crowd loved them and the night was a terrific success. The 'Bath' is a
perfect venue and I was pleased to hear from Carly that lots more live music is
in the pipeline. So it looks as if we now have another great venue to bring
lovers of live music into the area. Make sure you support them and we'll all
benefit.
Unbelievably the next night we had another delight in store. Pink Floyd
tribute band, 'I Floyd' filled the Town Hall with their good as original versions of
some superb music. It's so good to see the Town Hall being put to such good
use. This wonderful building is a priceless asset to the community; it draws lots
of visitors, provides us with a perfect venue for so many social and
administrative needs and, when properly used, can be self funding. We all owe a
lot to the dedicated people who go to such trouble to ensure that it continues
to thrive. Make sure you always use it when the opportunity occurs.
The delights continued just a few days later. Gary and his team at the
'Cottage Inn' had worked tirelessly to bring us an amazing beer and music
festival that must go down as one of the most memorable events ever!
Hundreds of people rejoiced in 3 days of superb bands and solo acts in a perfect
venue that seemed custom-made for the purpose. The music was of such high
quality that I can't possibly single any out for special mention. However, sound
engineer Giles brought us a top of the range sound system and operated it with
consummate skill and attention to detail. This ensured that everyone sounded
exactly as they wished, thus inspired to play at their very best. Thanks are due
to Gary and his team and all those who worked so hard to make life here a
wonderful experience for locals and visitors alike. When I spoke to some
visitors afterwards they were surprised to find such fun in this beautiful place
and vowed to come back next year. Gary tells me that this will, indeed, be an
annual event.

LYN VALLEY WILDLIFE WATCH
Searching for nightjars
Years ago nightjars were common in much of the UK, their eerie night time
call recognised by anyone living outside a city. But then their population
declined, almost halving in the 1970s. Even now they’re rare in Scotland, and
virtually extinct in Ireland. But we’re lucky. More and more of these
fascinating summer visitors are coming to Exmoor to breed; the large scale
harvesting of mature conifers nearby means plenty of the clearfell areas
nightjars prefer for their so-called nests (in fact, they simply lay their eggs on
the ground). Hunching down or perched on a branch through the day, they’re
well camouflaged by their grey and brown feathers. Come dusk the male will
soar into the sky, clapping his wings, his territorial song announcing that he’s
awake and on the hunt. Moths beware.
I’ve never heard let alone seen a nightjar. So when I discovered Exmoor
National Park were asking for trainees to help monitor their numbers, I signed
up. On a still, warm, June night a group of us met on the roadside near
Dunster. There are thought to be fifty nesting pairs in the area and we were
there to check on them. We were given background info, safety instructions,
and then we split into small groups (just hubby and me in mine). Each group
was given a map of the area to be studied. Ours was plot G. We were told it
was unlikely we’d hear any nightjars but the area needed to be checked, just in
case. Our enthusiasm dwindled.
Still we set off into the rapidly darkening forest, trudging along the rugged
paths with our ears pricked. There was plenty of bird song echoing through
the trees - we could have been in a rainforest - but no nightjars. We stopped,
hands cupped behind our ears. And now even the birds were getting sleepy.
At ten the last little trill faded away. Silence. We loitered optimistically for
another half hour. Finally we gave up, switched on torches, and made our way
back. Everyone else in the group had heard nightjars, many had seen them, had
even recorded what sex they were. We hid our envy.
And then… we were about to head home when we heard it, that
unmistakable churring, close by, an other-worldly sound and yet familiar too.
We stood there, spellbound, both thinking how lucky we are to live in a place
where we can hear nightjars – if not on our doorstep, just down the road.

News from the Exmoor Pony Centre
Ashwick, Dulverton TA22 9QE
The next event at the Centre is our 10th Birthday Bash on Sunday 24th July
from 11am to 3pm with all the usual activities; pony grooming, children’s
crafts, refreshments and riding for those over 4 years old. One of our very first
ponies, Barney, is also 10 years old this year and will be celebrating with a
birthday party on Wednesday 27th July at Dunster Country Fair. Our charitable
aim is to give as many Exmoor ponies as possible a better future and a fulfilled
life. This month we have rehomed many of our ponies to foster homes and
conservation grazing sites throughout the country. The riding ponies are back
on site for the summer and bookings are now being taken for our popular
taster sessions and for trekking on beautiful Exmoor. Please note that all rides
and adoption pony visits need to be booked in advance.
We have a vacancy for an experienced rider to lead treks and help with riding
activities generally and, of course, we can always use more volunteers for
everything from mucking out to office admin. Please get in touch if you would
be interested. We are open to visitors between 10:00 and 4:00 on Sunday,
Monday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday throughout the summer.
