Theatre exists in the moment — if you miss it, you can never experience it again. Here at the Lyric, we’re working with some of the boldest contemporary theatre-makers around to grab hold of that moment and bring you theatre that is immediate and alive. Exuberant, visual, dangerous, this is thrilling storytelling at its best — made collaboratively with writers, directors, actors, musicians and designers. Theatre that tells stories about the world we live in, about us, in ways that capture the theatrical imagination, that spills off the edge of the stage and opens up the limitless possibilities of what it can be, what form it can take, and most importantly, where it can take you.

Kafka’s terrifying but bizarrely comic story bursts onto the stage in a theatrically explosive new version by Artistic Director David Farr and actor/director Gísli Örn Gardarsson of Iceland’s acclaimed Vesturport Theatre (Woyzeck, Romeo and Juliet).

The ordinary, unremarkable life of the Samsas is turned upside down when their son, Gregor, emerges one morning transformed into a monstrous insect. As revulsion turns to resentment, strange things start to happen to the Samsa family…

Jaw-dropping physicality, striking design and an exquisite original soundtrack by Nick Cave and Warren Ellis combine to make Kafka’s dream-like vision an electrifying reality.

The Guardian on Dirty Wonderland

An horrific accident. An artistic dilemma.

Frantic Assembly (Dirty Wonderland, Hymns, Peepshow) returns to the Lyric with a thrilling new collaboration with acclaimed writer Mark Ravenhill (Shopping and F**king).

A famous artist invites her old college friends out to her luxurious new home and, for one night only, the group is back together. However, celebrations come to an abrupt end when the host suffers a terrible accident. As the victim lies in a coma an almost unthinkable plan starts to take shape: could her suffering be their next work of art?

A visceral and shocking new show about the fragility of friendship and the jealousy and resentment inspired by success.

Cracking Christmas shows are a Lyric tradition. After the thrills and spills of The Firework-Maker’s Daughter and The Magic Carpet comes the greatly anticipated new adaptation of Watership Down — brought to life by acclaimed director Melly Still (Coram Boy).

When Fiver senses danger, a small band of rabbits make a hurried escape in search of safety — a high place, where they can spot enemies for miles around. They must stick together, be quick, and be cunning. But the real threat to their future is greater than a thousand enemies, and they will risk their lives to overcome it…

With stirring live music, an acrobatic cast, and a few surprises, this triumphant adventure will have the whole family on the edge of their seats!

Fasten your seatbelts and hold on tight — the award-winning Kneehigh Theatre (Nights at the Circus, Tristan & Yseult, The Bacchae) is back at the Lyric.

A wicked Queen, two princes kidnapped at birth, a daughter’s betrayal, a banished lover and a mistaken identity combine to create this joyous and elemental production. With a vivid and physical storytelling style, Cymbeline dances through misunderstandings, intimacies, betrayals and invasions with heart-stopping poetry and sensational live music.

With more twists and turns than a Cornish lane, this promises to be a white-knuckle ride that you won’t forget!

‘Wonderfully cheeky, darkly fantastical…

The Lyric’s trademark combination of thrilling storytelling and theatrical exuberance journeys to India in David Farr’s new version of one of the greatest love stories of all time.

Exiled from the serene palaces of their homeland and plunged into the deep forests of Southern India, the passionate love of Rama and Sita is put to the test — as demons, goddesses and an army of monkeys do battle for their hearts.

Set to a hauntingly beautiful soundtrack by leading light of the UK Asian music scene, Shri (of Badmarsh & Shri), Ramayana takes you on a heady and moving journey through forests and fire.

‘This ancient epic story seems as fresh

as on the day it was first told.’ HHHH

In 1848 African-American slave Ellen Craft escaped to freedom by disguising herself as a white man. Mojisola Adebayo extends this inspiring biography into a flight of theatrical fantasy, where identities melt like ice, as Moj becomes the first ‘Black woman’ to set foot on the wilderness of whiteness that is Antarctica.

Against a backdrop of extraordinary world events, an ordinary Muslim family gathers round their kitchen table during Ramadan to pray and break fast. Over the course of the day, family conflict exposes surprising secrets. From the company behind 2004’s huge hit Curry Tales, this powerful new drama asks: ‘Do you know what is going on under your own roof?’

‘Astonishingly moving… rarely have I seen such talent or such intimate contact with the pulse of this nation.’ The Independent on Curry Tales

Witness a world of word-mongers, soap-box philosophers and preachers through the eyes of Ossie Jones and his daughter as they walk through the streets of Brixton. As Ossie comes to terms with the loss of his wife, and his daughter searches to find her father again, Bandele weaves together fantasy and reality to take you on a magical and enchanting journey.

‘An enchanting fantasy piece… irresistible.’ The Sunday Times ‘A stroke of genius... extremely funny.’ Metro

It’s 1906 or so it seems. The Iranian monarchy is about to succumb to the will of the people. 30 Bird returns to the Lyric following the sell-out success of Majnoun, with a surreal and darkly comic new spin on Iranian history — inspired by the momentous events of the 1906 Constitutional Revolution.

A season of groundbreakingnew work in the Lyric Studio

Page 9: Lyric Hammersmith Autumn Winter 2006 Guide

This Christmas, Lyric family favourite Oily Cart returns to transform the Studio with bouncy, stretchy, bubbly balloons in not one but two balloon shows — Big Balloon (ages 3-6) and Baby Balloon (ages 6 months - 2 years). Come and meet the inhabitants of this interactive wonderland where balloons roll on the floor, drift through the air, change size and colour, puff out perfumes, squeak and make rude noises!

Featuring live music, video projection and outrageous costumes created from — you’ve guessed it — balloons! Sure to enchant the littlest audiences.

Places are strictly limited so please book early to avoid disappointment.

‘This company is one of the most inventive working in Britain today.’ The Guardian
