Dear Friends,

Welcome to this 2013-2014 season of Music at Christ & Saint Stephen’s Church. We are delighted to offer another year of special

services and an assorted selection of concerts performed by an outstanding line up of national and international artists.

As many people may be aware, this fall marks the 50th Anniversary of John F. Kennedy’s dreadful assassination. We will pay tribute to him, as well as Robert F. Kennedy and Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., in a program of anthems and spirituals titled Fallen Heroes. The choir will be directed by Professor Paul Spicer from England (whom we are delighted to host again), and accompanied by organist Nigel Potts and harpist Grace Cloutier.

In the New Year we continue our collaboration with Paul Jacobs’ students from the Juilliard School Organ Department in Organ Plus! – The Organ as Chamber Music Partner. A concert of various instrumental combinations and composers, showcasing such young talent is not to be missed.

After the success of the unique piano and organ duo concert featuring Rachmaninov’s Second Piano Concerto here in 2011, pianist Jeremy Filsell returns to perform both Rachmaninov’s First & Second Piano Concertos. Nigel Potts will provide his orchestral reduction for these concertos on the Symphonic Schoenstein Organ in celebration of the organ’s Sixth Anniversary.

And to conclude the concert season, we are glad to host The Ullern Chamber Choir from Oslo as part of their USA tour in a program of Norwegian Choral Music.

These concerts will be in addition to the weekly Sunday morning services and our special choral services as outlined on page 4. Services such as Evensong offer tranquility and a spiritual escape from the hustle and bustle of our city, and are all free and open to the public.

Finally, if you value the music offered at CSS, please consider joining (or renewing) the Friends of Music with a tax deductible contribution for this season, and/or the purchase of a CD, of which all proceeds benefit the Friends of Music. All gifts are much appreciated.

We look forward to welcoming you to Christ & Saint Stephen’s this season.

With all good wishes,

Nigel PottsOrganist & Choirmaster

The chOir

The chOir OF chrisT & sainT sTephen’s consists of eight professional New York singers. Although

they all come with a wealth of choral experience for blend and liturgical empathy, the choir members also have active solo, oratorio, and/or operatic careers within the USA and Europe.

The choir sings the principal Sunday morning Choral Eucharist service (with reduced numbers during the summer), as well as extra services for the major feast days and other special services, such as Choral Evensong during the year. A wide range of repertoire is sung during the course of the liturgical season, from the late Medieval and Renaissance period, through the 20th Century to compositions of the present day, but with an emphasis on Tudor England and the great Anglican Choral tradition. The choir has commissioned music by prominent American composers such as Bruce Neswick and Robert Lehman, and has been directed by respected visiting conductors such as Brian Jones, Jared Johnson, as well as Paul Spicer from England.

Nigel Potts ~ Organist & Choirmaster

The Anglican Church music tradition has been an important and enduring part of

Nigel Potts’ life, having held Cathedral and Church positions in New Zealand, England and the USA.

Born into a musical family, (his grandmother being a student of Herbert Howells), Nigel’s church music career began as an 8-year old chorister at Wellington Cathedral. He has held the Organ Scholarships in English Cathedrals, where he accompanied the choirs for daily Evensongs, recordings and tours, and worked in London as a freelance organist playing services and recitals in Westminster Abbey, St. Paul’s Cathedral and other churches.

A graduate of Yale University, Nigel was appointed Organist & Choirmaster of Christ & Saint Stephen’s in 2006, where he conducts the professional choir and directs the Music at Christ & Saint Stephen’s concert series. In 2008, he oversaw the installation of the new Schoenstein organ.

Nigel has commissioned choral music from prominent American and British composers, and his transcriptions are published by MorningStar Music. As a Concert

Organist, Nigel has performed across four continents, including distinguished venues in London, Cambridge, Paris, New York, Washington DC, San Francisco, Hong Kong, Singapore and Sydney, as well as in Austria, Iceland, Taiwan and New Zealand.

Paul Jacobs ~ Artist in Residence

Paul Jacobs is one of the most celebrated Concert Organists of our generation and is also the Chair of

the Organ Department at the Juilliard School.

Paul accompanies the Christ & Saint Stephen’s Choir for major services through out the year, in addition to performing and lecturing on the concert series. In 2008, he gave the opening dedication recital of the new Schoenstein organ.

In 2011, Paul was awarded the Best Instrumental Soloist Performance (without Orchestra) Grammy.

The schOensTein & cO. Organ

The organ at Christ & Saint Stephen’s was designed and built by the San Francisco

company of Schoenstein & Co. in 2008.

The organ of 15 stops, is in the symphonic style, of which its concepts of maximum variety of tonal color and the widest possible dynamic range, creates an instrument not only of great beauty, but versatility. This symphonic style is ideal for the Anglican service, which demands the most intricate and sophisticated choral accompaniments, solid support of congregational singing, and a wealth of tonal variety for organ solo repertoire.

The façade pipes were decorated, (as in the Victorian period) to capture the color and design motifs of the church. The organ case and choir stalls was beautifully built by New Holland Church Furniture company.
