History

• English first settled region in 1607 (Jamestown in Virginia)

• Settlers returned to England within 1 year• British colonialization in 1620• Shipbuilding industry (continues till today)• Massachusetts took Maine (lose of sovereignty) • 1820 Maine became 23rd State in the Union• Capital: Bangor

Midcoast Maine

• Lots of long wooded peninsulas

• Once little seafarers‘ or fishing villages

• Boothbay Harbor: now extremely popular tourist resort

• Well kept Victorian Houses, a lot of Inns and B&Bs now

• Whale watching tours

Pemaquid Point Lighthouse

• Built in 1827

• 1826 John Quincy Adams appropriated $4,000 to build lighthouse station

• One of 61 surviving lighthouses, 52 still in operation

L.L.BEAN – an American Institution

• 1911 invented hunting boots – became the now-iconic Bean Boot

• in 1951 Beam himself removed the locks from store, made decision to open 24 hours, 365 days a year

• Nowadays a must to visit• Store only closed twice, 1963
