VADAPALANI

For Gemini’s ‘Nandanaar’, Murugadasa and Vasan used some ofthe original compositions of Gopalakrishna Bharathiyar like‘Sivaloka Naathanai Kandu Sevithiduvom Vaareer’ in ragaNaadhanaamakriya (Bharathiyar had composed it inraga Senjurutti), ‘Vazhi Maraithirikkudhey’ (raga Thodi), ‘EllorumVaarungal’ (raga Bilahari; Bharathiyar had tuned it in raga Behag),‘Pittham Theliya Marundhondru’ (raga Sankarabharanam) ‘AyyeMettha Kadinam’ (Ragamalika, Bharathiyar had composed it inraga Punnagavarali), ‘Varugalaamo’ (raga Manji) and ‘ChidambaramDharisanam’ (raga Mukhari, raga Asaveri by Bharathiyar.)

The classical Carnatic music maestro ‘Thamizh Thiagaiah’Papanasam Sivan, composed a few songs that were not inGopalakrishna Bharathiyar’s musical. The music directors were M.D. Parthasarathy and S. Rajeswara Rao, who were on the pay rollsof Gemini Studios.

Desikar’s singing talents were fully exploited by Vasan for themovie. Ever a stickler for quality, he recorded some of these songsmany times and shot them again and again. Not surprisingly,Desikar was upset and felt even hurt. (Desikar told this writer inlater years that, for some time thereafter, Vasan and he were noton talking terms!)

As marketing strategy Vasan announced a trail-blazing Rs.10,000-Prize-Song Contest for ‘Nandanaar’ . The moviegoers wereasked to choose ‘Ten Best Songs’ in the order of merit and drop theanswer sheet along with torn-half (counterfoil) of the cinema ticketin a box provided at movie houses where the film was screened.Vasan had the prechosen the prize list of the songs and had themdeposited in a sealed envelope with the Indian Bank, First LineBeach (now Rajaji Salai) well before the prize scheme was an-nounced, and had it opened in the presence of reputed witnesses afterthe last date of the scheme. This was the first time that such ascheme was introduced in South India and it created a sensation andcontributed in good measure to the box-office success of the film.

Many songs from the film became hits and the movie itself wasa major hit. When the sixty-plus year-old film was screened recentlyby ‘Vintage Heritage’ after many years it drew large crowds to thesurprise of many. Obviously classics never fade or pall. ‘Nandanaaris undoubtedly one of them…

Desikar’s’ last film was ‘Thirumazhisai Aazhwaar’ (1948). Thisfilm was long in production due to financial problems and, whenreleased, it hardly raised a ripple. Sadly the disaster ruined theproducers. One of them was a successful automobile businessmanof Mount Road, Madras and the other was a wealthy Brahminbusinessman of Vepery. Few remember this film today.

Later Desikar rose high in the Carnatic musical firmament, actively helped and inspired by the Thamizh Isai Movement. Forsome time he was Principal of the Music College of AnnamalaiUniversity. Here a problem arose over his entanglement with a ladyand it sadly led to his resignation. It caused him much mentalanguish and soon after he passed away in 1972.

G. N. BALASUBRAMANIAMG. N. Balasubramaniam, a legend in his lifetime and a legend that

still lives even after his lamented departure for the Land of NoReturn over 30 years back. An icon of classical Carnatic music, hewas immortalised under his famous initials, ‘GNB’. Like mostCarnatic musicians of yesteryears he too had his brush with moviesduring the early decades of Tamil Cinema, 1930-1940s.

Not many are aware that GNB was the first college-educatedman to appear in Tamil Cinema when cinema was treated as a dirtysix-letter word! He was a B. A (Hons.) degree holder and it appearedas a suffix to his name in all the movie ads of the day.

His innings in Tamil Cinema yielded only five films - ‘BhaamaVijayam’ (1934), ‘Sathi Anasuya’ (1937), ‘Sakunthalai’ (1940),‘Rukmaangadhan’ (1946) and ‘Udhayanan Vassavadatta’ (1946).Among these, only ‘Sakunthalai’, in which he co-starred with an-other legend M. S. Subbulakshmi, has been permanently andindelibly etched in public memory. While a few old timers still recallthe super hit of the early 1930s ‘Bhaama Vijayam’ . The rest havebeen forgotten even by film buffs. (To be continued)

Sir, - As one nears MambalamRailway Station it is the overpow-ering stench of urine that assailsthe nostrils. The space under thefoot overbridge just below thegeneral ticket counters (5) is usedfor urnination after dark by com-muters, vendors and dogs on Sta-tion Road. This segment serves asa garbage dump too with everincreasing mounds of rubbish.Commuters have to put up with allthis while climbing up and downthe stairs. Those thronging thereservation counters from the smallhours ahead of the holiday/festival

LETTERS TO THE EDITORFilth surrounds railway station

season have also to suffer in si-lence. Conditions worsen when itrains as happened on June 28.

Commuters from Ashok Nagar,K. K. Nagar and Vadapalani enterthrough this side of the stationbesides those from West Mam-balam.

South bound trains also halt inMambalam Station.

It is therefore necessary that theauthorities take immediate steps tokeep the station and surroundingsclean and garbage free. – Prof. R.Ramadurai, 35/2, ChakrapaniStreet, West Mambalam

Sir, - Brindavan Street, whichconnects K. K. Nagar and T.Nagar, is one of the busiest streetsin the area. The number of 2-wheelers, autorickshaws, cars, vans, lorries and MTC buses whichuse this street is very high. Thecontinuous flow of vehicles makesit practically impossible for pedes-trians to cross the street as driversjust do not have the patience orcourtesy to stop to allow pedestri-ans to cross.

Need for signal to help pedestrians

There is a traffic policemanstationed at the junction ofThambiah Road and BrindavanStreet during peak hours on work-ing days but still traffic jams andminor accidents are a regular oc-currence. Chennai Corporation has identi-fied over 400 speedbreakers in the426 sq. km. of the city limits forredesign incorporating safety fea-tures.

Most of the identified speedbreakers are badly designed anddo not adhere to Indian RoadsCongress (IRC) standards. Ac-cording to the standards, the shapemust be parabolic and the widthmust be at least 3.7 meters. Theheight of the structure must notexceed 10 cm.

It must also be painted in a ‘V’shape and illuminated by solarcat’s eyes. Signs coated with re-flective paint must be placed 40meters ahead and must mention thedesired speed at which thespeedbreaker can be negotiated.

Speedbreakers in city to beredesigned

Zones in southern parts of thecity such as Sholinganallur haveover 30 speedbreakers in interiorparts. These have been found to beunauthorised and are likely to be‘smoothened’ instead of rede-signed. In northern zones such asThiruvotriyur, only one of the 30identified speedbreakers was foundto be authorised.

The initiative to redesign orremove speedbreakers follows thedeath of the son of State Coopera-tion Minister Sellur K. Raju in amotorcycle accident at a speedbreaker on NSC Bose Road onJan. 25.

Adequate illumination ofthespeed breakers in many stretcheswill be the priority, officials said.Report courtesy The Hindu
