Tamil Cinema & Music - 49What sort of a person was M. L. Vasanthakumari? Her

much-talented multi-lingual movie star daughter Srividyaspoke about her mother ‘on camera’ in the 60-minute TV film‘Thirai Vaanil Oru Isai Thenee’ made by this writer during theearly 1990s and telecast over two weekly installments byDoordarshan Kendra, Madras.

In it Srividya said, “My mother was highly supportive andappreciative of other musicians and film singers, especiallywomen, even though she did not know them at all. If she hearda song sung well on radio or TV or anywhere else, she went outof the way to trace the singer and talk to her on the phone inthe most encouraging and endearing terms. She also spoke insuch glowing terms to young and new film music composers.’

This writer found MLV warm, friendly and humble. She toldhim how once she and her husband Krishnamurthy went toAVM Studios in Kodambakkam by a ‘jutka’ (horse carriage) fora song recording. What a far cry from today’s singers who insiston air-conditioned cars and similar sound recording studios!

M. L. Vasanthakumari is no more but her songs shall liveforever. Life may be short but art is eternal …NAGASWARAM LEGEND T. N. RAJARATNAM PILLAI

When movies began to talk Tamil in 1931 with H. M. Reddi’s‘Kalidas’ and when ‘Valli Thirumanam’ (1933) directed by P. V.Rao (today totally forgotten) featuring the first star of SouthIndia, T. P. Rajalakshmi, became a super hit, Tamil filmproduction began to run on top gear.

Many moneybags ventured into movies for quick profitsbesides the attractive fringe benefits. Tamil filmmakers madea beeline to the world of classical Carnatic music for actors whocould sing in their own voices. The system of ‘behind the screen’voice-lending - ‘play-back’ singing – did not come into vogue untilthe end of the 1930s. That was how noted musicians like MusiriSubramania Iyer, G. N. Balasubramaniam, V.V. Satagopan,M. M. Dhandapani Desikar, Kalakkad Ramanarayana Iyer,Vidwan Srinivasan, Nagercoil K. Mahadevan, KothamangalamSeenu, Mysore T. Chowdaiah, M. S. Subbulakshmi, N. C.Vasanthakokilam, C. Honnappa Bhagavathar, Mathirim-angalam Natesa Iyer and such others acted in films.

Not many are aware that the Sangeetha BhishmaSemmangudi Srinivasa Iyer was first contracted by the moviemogul AV. Meiyappan to play Nandanar in a film he hadplanned, but Semmangudi Mama withdrew because his fatherthreatened to jump into the family well if he ‘demoralized’himself acting in movies!

In the list of the great musicians who acted in movies was thenagaswaram maestro Thiruvavaduthurai N. RajaratnamPillai. He appeared in a solitary Tamil film ‘Kalamegam’ (1940)directed by the American Tamil filmmaker, Ellis R. Dungan.

Ellis R. Dungan came to India in 1935 as a young man in hisearly twenties and left in 1950. During these fifteen years, hemade many hits and classics without knowing Tamil, thelanguage or its culture. Interestingly his films were based onHindu mythology, epics, folk myth and folklore. The list in-cludes ‘Sathi Leelavathi’, ‘Sakunthalai’, ‘Meera’, ‘Dhaasi Penn’,‘Seemanthani’, ‘Valmiki’ (Telugu), ‘Iru Sahotharargal’, ‘Ponmudi’, ‘Manthiri Kumari’ and ‘Kalamegam’.

T.N. Rajaratnam was cast in the title role as Kavi Kalamegam,a legendary Tamil poet who had the gift of his words comingtrue. In the cast were the noted stars of those days SP. L.Dhanalakshmi, N. S. Krishnan, T. A. Mathuram, singing starC.V. V. Panthulu, musician T. V. Namasivayam, K. R. VenugopalaSarma, Kali N. Ratnam, P. R. Mangalam and P. S. Gnanam.

SP.L. Dhanalakshmi hailed from a family of traditionalentertainers in Thanjavur and was active in movies during the1930s and early 1940s. She was the aunt of the latter-daycelebrated star T. R. Rajakumari. The noted movie-dancersJyothilakshmi and Jayamalini are her daughters.

During the making of ‘Kalamegam’, SP.L. brought herstunningly attractive 18-year-old niece Rajayee to meet Dunganfor a break in movies. However, he could offer her only a minorcomedy role in the film, which the aunt and niece politelydeclined. Within a year, the niece emerged as a top star of southIndia under the name T. R. Rajakumari with Indian film pioneerK. Subramanyam’s hit film ‘Kaccha Devayani’ (1941)! (To be continued)

Audio alerts for visuallychallenged commuters awaitingbuses By Our Staff Reporter

Nethrodaya (47/1, Nolambur Phase II, West Mogappair) isan institution for the welfare of the visually impaired community. It has taken a number of initiatives to empower visuallychallenged persons.

In one of its recent initiatives, Founder C. Govindakrishnanhas, with the help of IIT Madras and the Tamilnadu Govt.,developed an audio system for the benefit of visually challengedcommuters of MTC buses in the city.

Visually challenged commuters find it extremely difficult atbus stops and are dependent on fellow passengers to know thebus number and board the correct bus to reach their destination.

Nethrodaya represented this issue to the State Governmentand requested installation of an audio alert system at bus stopsand bus terminuses. The project was funded by TamilnaduGovt. The State Government sought the help of IIT Madras indeveloping the gadget and constituted a committee and alsoappointed Govindakrishnan as one of its members.

IIT Madras has come up with a successful design in which awireless transmitter system is fitted in the bus and a smallhandheld gadget, which acts as a receiver, is provided to thevisually challenged person.

The wireless system in the bus will alert the visually challengedcommuters at bus stops by sending an audio message aboutthe bus number and destination to the hand held device.

According to Govindakrishnan, Nethrodaya shared valuablesuggestions in designing of the system like easy availability ofspare parts for the handheld device and a waterproof mechanismfor the device to avoid failure during rain.

The first handheld device was presented to Govindakrishnanby Chief Minister Edappadi K. Palanisamy.

For more information about the device, contactGovindakrishnan in 4265 5741 or 93828 96636.

Women Helpline 1091

By M. A. SADANANDManu’s Wedding

Manu, my grandson, took a look at Swathy and decidedthat he had found his sparkling future in the brilliant smileof the girl.

So, things moved swiftly and the families met and decidedon the match, aided and abetted by the Gods, their wives, andmiscellaneous hangers-on.

Of course, the respective parents and knowledgeablerelatives approved the marriage between the TCS and InfyIT professionals, who are God’s latest choices, for a comingtogether as man and wife.

Their wedding was fixed for 9th April at Tripunithura,Ernakulam, Kerala. Let’s give the couple, their parents andthe hordes of relatives a round of applause for the best andspeedy decision in their lives.

My brood in Chennai closed shop and descended on thevenue a day in advance of the wedding. I travelled earlymorning by plane from Bangalore to Kochi with my daughterand her family which included the groom. I loved the decisionto travel by air since my flawed knee would not have stoodup to supporting my hip on a long train journey to Kochi.

The Kempegowda Airport in Bangalore looked beautiful aswe took off as dawn broke on the horizon. The rest of the daysaw a flurry of relatives and friends arriving at differenthours to fill up the dozens of hotel rooms booked in advanceby my son-in-law.

The great day dawned and all the wedding invitees congre-gated at the venue, the Abhishekam Auditorium and, bynoon, the hall was full to the boundaries with beautifullydressed people. Thanks to my octogenarian status, I wasoffered the front row next to my cousins Sarojini Nair,Premaja and my niece Beena.

As I was listening to the divine music created by a set oftalented artistes seated on the aesthetically decoratedstage with its flower garlands and glowing brass lamps, Ilooked around and suddenly felt that I saw my wife Lakshmistanding smiling and beckoning me from a corner. I felt tearson my cheeks. Looking for my handkerchief, which was leftbehind in the hotel room, my unbridled tears started over-flowing when the divine songs preceded the ‘thali-tying’ritual. I must have looked terribly foolish and utterly lost. Then, a handkerchief from Premaja wiped away my continu-ous flow of tears. They were the tears that Lakshmi wouldhave shed on this pure occasion had she not gone to herheavenly abode over a year ago.

As the wedding unfolded with its simple, brief and solemnrituals, I could barely see the event through my overflowingeyes. But for the presence of my cousins and niece, whom Ihad not met in years, I wonder how I would have got throughmy outburst of emotions. Appeal for pedestrian crossings on Arya Gowda RoadSir, A number of commercial establishments, banks, temples and Post

Office are situated on Arya Gowda Road, West Mam-balam. Pedestrians, especially senior citizens, find it very difficult and unsafe to cross the busyroad. I request the authorities to earmark pedestrian crossing points onthe road by drawing zebra lines.

Since the road has no median, at these pedestrian crossings, a couple ofbarricades interspaced by a foot or two can be used as a central median. This will enable the pedestrians to cross the road safely, especially whenthey reach the middle section of the road. They can cross the first half ofthe road and safely stand between the barricades and then cross the otherhalf of the road after the traffic eases.

No policemen will be required. I recommend pedestrian crossings nearIndian Bank, ICICI Bank, IOB, Post Office, Thambiah Road-Station Roadjunction and Thambiah Road Jubilee Road junction on Arya Gowda Road.R. Hariharan, 58, Jubilee Road, West Mambalam. Ph: 98401 72892

Paul Appasamy Street residents suffer dueto water contamination

Sir, For the past year, water supplied throughthe pipeline byMetrowater in PaulAppasamy Street, T.Nagar is contaminatedwith sewage water. Thewater stinks and is unfitfor consumption orother household use.

Several complaintshave been made toMetrowater authoritiesin Ward 117, but no ac-tion has been taken sofar to rectify the prob-lem. The residents, es-pecially children and se-nior citizens, are facingregular health issues. The residents are also forced to spend a lot of moneyin frequently cleaning the sumps in their homes due to excess deposit ofsilt and sewage in the contaminated water.

Some residents have permanently closed the sump inlet and arespending money to buy water to supplement their needs. With summerhitting hard, the daily water needs have also gone up. I appeal toMetrowater officials to rectify the issue without further delay as theresidents are suffering. T. Mahalakshmi, Paul Appasamy Street, T.Nagar, Ph: 94448 10192

Public Health Dept. must take action againstunlicensed eateries

Sir, The Public Health Department of Chennai Corporation, in theoverall interest of the public, has come out with some ‘Do’s and Don’ts’ totackle the summer heat.

One of them advises the public not to eat food items or cut fruit with fliesswarming over them, and avoid drinking butter milk/cold drinks being soldat roadside eateries as they are likely to contain harmful pathogens. Whileone appreciates its advisory, isn’t it the primary duty and responsibility ofthe PHD to come down on eateries that serve substandard food. Havingturned a blind eye to the proliferation of unlicensed roadside eateries, whatis the point then in cautioning the public? Instead of advising the public, what PHD should do is to take immediate action and remove unlicensedeateries and also keep a constant vigil to ensure such shops do notreappear. V. S. Jayaraman, 31, Motilal Street, T. Nagar

‘Inefficiency’ of civic departments helps residentSir, On April 4, I had issued two cheques towards payment of property

tax and water/sewerage tax to Greater Chennai Corporation and CMWSSBrespectively. At that time, I did not realize that I did not have enough balancein my bank account.

On April 10, I issued another cheque to pay the monthly bill of a serviceprovider and then decided to check the bank balance. To my surprise, Ifound the balance was insufficient. Luckily, neither of the cheques issuedto Chennai Corporation nor the Metrowater Department had been re-ceived at the bank for clearance. I immediately remitted enough money intomy account to honour all the three cheques.

I gave a sigh of relief as, had the cheques bounced for insufficient funds,it could have caused embarrassment and ignominy. So, sometimes, inefficiency in the work culture of the civic departments also has somebenefit. K. Harihar, T. Nagar

Appeal for bus stop between Ashok Pillarand Postal Colony

Sir, There is no bus stop in the 2 km. stretch from Postal Colony to AshokPillar. Though there is a bus stop at Ram Colony, near 7th Avenue junction, only white board buses (low fare) halt at this stop.

But MTC has of late reduced the number of white board buses to augmentits income. Sometimes even white board buses skip this stop, especiallywhen the drivers see the green light in the traffic signals at the junctionclose by. It is causing a lot of hardship to residents of the adjoining colonieswho commute by bus as they are forced to walk a long distance.

I request MTC officials to install a bus stop between Postal Colony andAshok Pillar where all buses on the route should stop, to alleviate theproblems of the commuters, especially senior citizens, who are otherwiseforced to walk in the hot sun. H. Nagesh Bhandarkar, 40, 8th Avenue,Ashok Nagar
