An ancient Chinese proverb offers the following guidance about tree planting. “The best time to plant a

tree was 20 years ago, the second best time is now.” Contemporary counsel about starting new churches

reflects a similar wisdom. The single most effective means to make new disciples for Jesus Christ is

through the creation of new faith communities or churches. Across our Dakotas Conference we’re recom-

mitting ourselves to this and other tasks in efforts to increase the disciple-making fruitfulness of our col-

lective United Methodist witness. We’re beginning to gather resources and pledges of future support to

fuel growth of a new era in church planting and church revitalization.

Thrive – Strength for Today, Hope for Tomorrow, our conference-wide capital campaign for congrega-

tional development was launched at the Annual Conference session in early June. Thrive has been created

to resource a congregational development plan that is focused on reaching new people to grow in love for

Jesus Christ for the transformation of the world through starting new churches, strengthening existing

churches, developing existing leaders, and preparing the next generation of leaders.

At the foundation of this campaign is a set of core beliefs. If we sincerely believe that God is calling us to

passionately and respectfully offer Christ in a Wesleyan way that’s relevant in our cultural context and that

inspires hope and new life… and we are sincere in our prayers for God to send one more person, family or

child for us to love and disciple in Christ… then we are compelled to come together to plant new churches,

nurture congregational renewal, and prepare leaders, in order to reach new people of all ages and life cir-

cumstances and connect them with the body of Christ.

The Missional Church Consultation Initiative (MCCI), in which our congregation is a participant and

beneficiary, is a strategic element of revitalization efforts in the plan. For First UMC and other current

and future MCCI churches, Thrive will provide a stream of resources to support further the conference’s

commitment to churches in this process. Our church is and will be a leader in the conference goal that

over the next 7 years, 40% of Dakotas Conference congregations will meet the vitality standards: inviting

and inspiring worship; engaged disciples in mission and outreach; effective, equipped, and inspired clergy

leadership; gifted, empowered and equipped lay leadership; small group ministries and strong children’s

and youth ministries.

The total planned expenditures for the congregational development plan are $6.7 million over the next 7

years. Approximately $3.5 million will be raised through the conference’s apportioned budget. The re-

mainder of $3.2 million is the goal for Thrive. Our church will have the opportunity in the coming months

to make a special commitment in support of this campaign. While there are a number of avenues by which

a local church can actively participate, the primary method around which we are being asked to discern is

the commitment of a gift equal to 2% of our church’s 2015 or 2016 income paid each year for 5 years.

This tithe goal is the minimum that all churches in the Dakotas Conference are being asked to consider.

This approach emphasizes the concept of unequal gifts but equal sacrifice.

In the next few months as our Leadership Board is formed, along with other administrative, operational,

and ministry teams, we’ll receive a formal presentation from a campaign volunteer. My prayer is that

we’ll have clarity in our minds and great peace in our spirits as we make our formal response and commit-

ment. We’ll be blessed now and blessings will flow to future generations.

Together in Ministry,

Pastor Greg

ing, slow down and find a renewed

focus on the simplicity of the Gospel.

This very thing, in fact, is one of the

hardest spiritual disciplines to accom-

plish. The Book of Hebrews says it

clearly, "They failed to enter into my

rest—because they would not believe."

It wasn't a spiritual work that they

lacked—but a spiritual rest. And that

rest could have easily been gained

through simple trust.

Of course, read your Bible and pray

often, but not so that God will love you,

but so that you'll be reminded how

much He already does.

Things haven't changed much. We,

just like the ancient believers, have a

hard time with simple trust and often

find ourselves caught in the clutches

of legalism. After years of following

Jesus, I found myself stuck in legal-

ism. Trust me, I know: the struggle

is real. But, like most things, one of

the first steps of becoming free from

legalism is to realize that you're

stuck in it.

Four Signs You Might Be Legalistic

The Christian blogosphere and

bookstores are filled with constant

encouragements to be passionate for

Jesus and “on fire” for God.

But in the midst of all of the encour-

agement to dive deep into a more

passionate spirituality, many in our

generation have found themselves

burnt out by pressing in and getting

bound up by legalism.

Every reformation throughout

Church history focused on bringing

people into a more effortless spiritu-

ality—where they find the work of

Christ more powerful and more ef-

fective than our own personal ef-

forts. This doesn't mean we

do nothing as Christians, but it does

mean we would do well to stop striv-

Today as I write this, I am in

Evanston, Illinois, just north of Chi-

cago at Garrett Evangelical Semi-

nary. For me, this is a wonderful

world — a place almost set apart.

As a teacher for twenty-something

years, I love learning, being in the

classroom, discussing ideas and

concepts with the teacher and my

fellow students. I am currently tak-

ing ‘Bible IV — Prophets, Psalms,

and Wisdom Literature’ and

‘Congregational Care’. One class

meets for 3.5 hours in the morning

and then the other meets for 3.5

hours in the afternoon. Each day

we have a short chapel service just

before lunch. Next week, I will be

tak ing two more classes :

‘Transformative Leadership’ and

‘Theological Heritage II — The

Early Church’. Each of my classes

are wonderful opportunities to learn

and grow and develop as a pastor.

Over meals, while working on

assignments, on walks downtown,

and at breaks, I am surrounded by

and involved in conversations with

other LLPs (Licensed Local Pas-

tors) about our ministry settings

and the experiences we each have.

We talk and quiz each other for

ideas, thoughts, solutions, and in-

sights. I learn much in these times

as well.

In addition to the work and learn-

ing done here at Garrett, I also

work for many hours before I ar-

rive. All of the reading and work

done beforehand probably

amounts to 70% of the work I do

each year for Course of Study.

Of course, I miss being in the

church as well. It will be very dif-

ficult to miss one funeral on

Wednesday and there will maybe

be other events that I wish I could

be there for — like ‘Pancakes in

the Park’. So there is a cost to be-

ing here as well.

But overall this is a great place

for me to be. Thank you so much

for your prayers and support. May

God bless you all!! - Pastor John

The How Will Become Wow!

Say Yes To God and Go, The Holy Spirit Will Flow!

How? I think if there is one word that creates doubt and causes us to feel inadequate to accomplish a task,

“How” is that word. It is a valid question and is an integral part of our decision-making process. It causes us to

look deep within ourselves and others. We begin to analyze our abilities, passions, motives and resources. We

also begin to evaluate the abilities and resources of those around us, based solely on what we have observed of

them and what is disclosed during conversations with them. Usually our passions are ignored and motives al-

tered if we believe our abilities and resources aren’t sufficient to achieve our desires. But when we desire to

serve others and be in ministry for Christ, aren’t we limiting ourselves? Let us always recognize from whom

our abilities and resources come. And let us always recognize that our Creator and Father God can accomplish

all things through us if we are willing.

There is a television commercial for a local Credit Union that has employees practicing “WOW POW” by

quickly extending their hands and arms. “WOW POW” is how the Credit Union is going to reach new custom-

ers and serve their existing customers. Maybe you have seen the commercial or been a recipient of “WOW

POW”. I have to admit, when I first saw this commercial (and for many times thereafter), I thought it was so

ridiculous and the dumbest commercial ever. But now I see value in it.

The “How” is to provide the “Wow.” Now, most of us do not think of ourselves as being able to “Wow” any-

body. However, let’s take another look at ourselves! At some point, we provided the “Wow” to our spouse or

significant other and our friends. At some point, we extended ourselves to “Wow” them, and we continue to

extend ourselves in order to strengthen our relationships. Why do we “Wow” them? Simply - Love.

Our minds tell us that it is different to extend ourselves and “Wow” family and friends than it is to “Wow”

someone we do not know or know very little about. But think about this; when we extend ourselves out to

someone, we are opening ourselves up to them so that they can see the goodness that we have within us. How-

ever, it is not our goodness, but a reflection of God’s goodness (love) within us. God has shared with each of

us His goodness through His Son, Jesus Christ. His goodness brings Joy to our lives - a Joy that cannot be con-

tained and is not meant to be contained. Each of us has a passion to serve Christ. So, let us not hold it back.

Don’t let “How” keep any of us from sharing God’s love with others. God saved us through our Lord Jesus

Christ and is an ever present power in our lives through the giving of His Holy Spirit. God will handle the

“How,” and everyone will say “Wow”.

Say Yes to God and Go, and the Holy Spirit will Flow. Let us be in ministry together.

God’s Peace and Grace be upon you!

Recommitment and Commissioning – Sunday, August 9th

Mark your calendars and please plan to be in worship on August 9 for “Recommitment

transform our Rapid City community. On that morning, every adult, youth and child

present will receive a symbol of this recommitment in order to be continually reminded

of First UMC’s collective purpose.

Sunday after church, a Mom asked her very young

Needless to say, the Mom was perplexed.

Later in the day , the pastor stopped by for tea and

the Mom asked him what that morning's Sunday

school lesson was about. He said "Be not afraid, thy

comforter is coming."

in the power of prayer. Each year

Dakotas Conference members are

asked to participate in the UMW

Prayer Vigils. Five special obser-

vances on the calendar are se-

lected as prayer focus, and local

UMW organizations are asked to

lift up prayer with the theme dur-

ing specific times within one

week. August 12 is International

Pray for the youth of our church

as they contemplate the return to

school, and pray for youth around

the world for whom access to

schooling is a struggle. Rapid City

First designated time to pray is

MISSION MOMENT

Submitted by Betty Strain,

Education and Interpretation Mission Coordinator

“The World Federation of Methodist and Uniting

Church Women is a worldwide fellowship of offi-

cially recognized Methodist, United and Uniting

Church women, claiming more than three million

members. United Methodist Women is a supporter

and member. It’s a worldwide network of Methodist

women that helps broaden our view of our own or-

ganization and see ourselves as part of something

larger and potentially more transformative.

World Federation churches represented in the United

States are the Christian Methodist Episcopal Church,

African Methodist Episcopal, African Methodist

Episcopal Zion, and the United Methodist Church.

The federation also has a representative to the United

Nations and is an autonomous affiliate of the World

Methodist Council.

In 2016, World Assembly will be the federation’s

13th worldwide gathering. The World Assembly is

held every five years. The next assembly will be held

August 29 to September 3, 2016 in Houston, Texas.”

of Women,” Response magazine, July-August, p. 40.

Summer Event

It is not too late for you to plan some fellowship for

your circle. Members can be encouraged to bring

company they have visiting as well as potential Cir-

cle members. Keep it simple, and it does not have to

be held at your home or involve a meal, right?
