TAMIL CINEMA 75 -A LOOK BACK

Tamil Cinema and Music - 10N. C. VASANTHAKOKILAM

‘Valmiki’ had C. Honnappa Bhagavathar, the Mysore State-basedCarnatic musician and actor (who replaced MKT Bhagavathar) ashero, with T. R. Rajakumari, T. S. Balaiah, U. R. Jeevaratnam, Kali N.Ratnam, C. T. Rajakantham and Nott Annaji Rao additionally in thecast. Directed by Sundar Rao Nadkarni, the film did fairly well at thebox-office.

Vasanthakokilam, as Naradar, sang many songs in this film includ-ing ‘Jaya Jaya Bhuvana Pathey’, ‘Sundaranandaa Vaikuntaa’, ‘PoiThavazhum’ (Simendramadhyamam and Kambodhi) and ‘Puvi Meedhu’(Shankarabharanam). All these songs became popular.

(Nott Annaji Rao was a well known actor of his day. His son wasHaridas Giri, the famed singing guru and cult figure. Haridas told thiswriter in later years that his father had named him after the hit filmof 1944!)

1947 witnessed another film ‘Kundalakesi’ with Vasanthakokilam, but it is scarcely remembered today. Based on a Tamil classic, it waswritten by Elangovan, the first star writer of Tamil cinema, anddirected by Bomman Irani. It had Honnappa Bhagavathar, G. PattuIyer, G. M. Basheer, T. R. Ramachandran, M. R. Swaminathan, N. C.Vasanthakokilam, K. L. V. Vasantha, and others in the cast.Papanasam Sivan wrote the songs and set the tunes while G.Ramanathan and S. M. Subbaiah Naidu took careof the musical score and orchestration.

In this movie, NCV sang songs in Hindolam and Shanmughapriyabut they did not create any impact and were forgotten as fast as thefilm itself was!

Vasanthakokilam again played Naradar in ‘Krishna Vijayam’ (1950)produced byJupiter Pictures and directed by Sundar Rao Nadkarni. BesidesNCV, it had P. V. Narasimha Bharathi, R. Balasubramaniam,C. V. V. Panthulu, Nott Annaji Rao, Trichur Premavathi and M.S.S.Bhagyam in the cast, and Lalitha-Padmini as dancers.

This movie had many songs some of which were written and com-posed by Papanasam Sivan. The music directors were S. M. Subbaiahand the famed play-back singer Chidambaram S. Jayaraman (whosang in ‘Sampoorna Ramayanam’ the hit song ‘Indru poi naalaivaaraay’, the immortal melody in raga Thilang.)

The musical talents and singing skills of Vasanthakokilam were usedto maximum advantage in this ‘Krishna Vijayam’. Her proficiency inclassical Carnatic music surfaced and soared skywards as neverbefore in any of her other films. She sang songs in many ragas includinga ragamalika about the birth of Lord Krishna ‘Porumai KadalaagiyaBhoomadevi’ in Bilahari, Neelambari, Bhairavi, Shankarabharanam,Thodi, Pantuvaraali, Mohanam, Sree Ragam, Anandhabhairavi andHamsnaadham. While NCV sang, the events were shown on screenusing amazing trick photography. One shot had five different eventsin a single frame, a brilliant technical achievement in the early 1950’swhen facilities were nowhere near what they are today! The composerwas Papanasam Sivan while S. M. Subbaiah Naidu handled theorchestration.

‘Karunanidhey Madhavaa’ (in Hindustani Kapi by Papanasam Sivanand C. S. Jayaraman), another ragamalika ‘Aayar Manaiyiley MaayanValarndhu.’ (in Karaharapriya, Atana, Harikambodhi, Senjurutti,Behag, Sriranjani, Gaganakuthoohalam, Kalyani, Vasantha, Surutti(composed by Papanasam Sivan and C. S. Jayaraman), ‘ NavaneethaKannaney’ (in Sindhubhairavi written by K.P. Kamakshi and C.S.Jayaraman,) became hits.

‘Krishna Vijayam’ was long in production and, when it came out, thetrend in Tamil cinema was changing fast under the sledge-hammerimpact of films like ‘Velaikkari’ (1949) and the increasing influenceof the Dravidian brand of politics and anti-god atheistic stance inTamil cinema. Even though the film was well made with tuneful music,it did not do as well as expected at the box office.

After this film NCV did not act in movies but she made her way upand up in the classical Carnatic music world. Indeed, according to somemusic lovers and critics, she would even have excelled MSS but did nothave the backing and public relations push. NCV’s Sathasivam(Satchi) was no match to MSS’s Sathasivam whose association withKalki magazine gave the latter a consistent boost! NCV’s health toosuffered and she fell a victim to tuberculosis. Known as an obstinatewoman and a difficult person to get along with, she had problems withSachi and ego clashes occurred between them quite often. (To be continued)

This space costsRs. 400 only!
