TAMIL CINEMA 75 -A LOOK BACK

Tamil Cinema and Music - 8N. C. VASANTHAKOKILAM

Now entered the life of Vasanthakokilam: a person of persuasive-plus charm and some clout in the fast-growing Tamil Cinema, C. K.Sathasivam.

Hailing from a family of noted and successful lawyers of Coimbatore,Sathasivam (Sachi, for short) was drawn to the new medium ofcinema and he sailed into it with glee and gusto. He gave up law andlearnt the rudiments of filmmaking for which he underwent limitedtraining in London.

A man of wide contacts in Madras in its social and cultural circles,he worked as Associate Director with the noted American Tamilfilmmaker Ellis R. Dungan in his historic maiden movie ‘SathiLeelavathi’ (1936) produced by the Coimbatore-based producer, A.N. Maruthachalam Chettiar.

Chettiar had already produced the box-office bonanza directed byManik Lal Tandon ‘Bhama Vijayam’ (1934) in which the Carnaticmusic legend who still lives undiminished long after his demise, G. N.Balasubramaniam (GNB) took his bow in movies as Sage Narada.Dungan’s ‘Sathi Leelavathi’ created history and many newtalents made waves and forged ahead to conquer peaks of fame andfortune. This roster included the Gemini movie mogul S. S. Vasan asstory-writer, and latter-day stars M. K. Radha ( of ‘Chandralekha’fame!), T. S. Balaiah, and, last but not the least, the man of destiny, deified leader of Tamils, cult figure and all, M.G. Ramachandran(MGR)!

Sachi also directed ‘Radha Kalyanam’ (1935) with the handsome, well known musicologist and musician S. Rajam as Lord Krishna andTamil film star M. R. Santhanalakshmi, in her maiden movie, asRadha.

Sachi entered Vasanthakokilam’s life with bells on, and becameher patron, protector, and much more, and promoted her as a singer-actress. In 1940 he produced a much-talked about movie‘Chandragupta Chanakya ’in which Vasanthakokilam looked stun-ningly seductive as a blue-blooded princess. Her makeup materialscame from London and her costumes were made by expert tailors ofMadras and Bangalore. Indeed Sachi gave her such a new ‘Hollywoodlook’ that many found it difficult to recognize her in the movie!

Directed by ‘C.K. Sachi, B. A. B. L’ as he styled himself in thecredits, this movie had singing actor Bhavani K. Sambamurthi asthe famed King Chandragupta Maurya, the figure of early Hinduhistory, together with noted character actor of the day S. D. R.Chandran as the legendary Chanakya, described by historians as‘the Indian Machiavelli’. Vasanthakokilam played ‘Chaya’, a prin-cess who falls in love with the historic hero.

The film was shot at Kali Film Studios, Calcutta Vasanthakokilamsang songs in ragas Navarasa Kannada, Asaveri, Hindolam,Karaharapriya, Behag and a three-voice song with two others in theraga Malhaar. But the film sank without trace soon after release andis hardly remembered today.

Her next film ‘Ganagavathar’ was produced at Sundaram SoundStudio, Adayar in Madras (which later became Sathya Studiosowned by MGR) and was directed by Sachi. It had an impressive castwith NCV as Ganga, along with Nagercoil K. Mahadevan, the singingstar and ‘Narada of Tamil cinema’ as Bhagirathi and the star ofyesteryears, C. V. V. Panthulu, as Lord Shiva and T. S. Damayanthias Parvathi. The excellent singer P. G. Venkatesan, known as ‘K.L.Saigal of South India’, played the role of Narada. It also had a finearray of comedy artistes like Kali N. Ratnam, C. T. Rajakantham,T.S. Durairaj, M. R. Swaminathan, P. R. Mangalam and T.V.A.Poorani.

In this movie, Vasanthakokilam sang songs in Hindustan Surutti,Kalyani, Karaharapriya, Mayamalavagowla and Misrakapi. Thefilm did fairly well, mainly due to its music and NCV’s songs. Sachipresented her with glamour using special hairstyles and all!

‘Venu Gaanam’ was another mythological film built around LordKrishna with Vasanthakokilam in the lead role as ‘Mitravinda’, oneof the wives of Krishna. It was directed by Murugadasa (MuthuswamiIyer), a pioneer of Tamil Cinema regretfully forgotten today, and wasscripted by K. Ramnoth, another neglected genius of Indian cinema. The well known Gemini Studios screenwriter Ki. Ra (K.Ramachandran) wrote the dialogues while lyrics were by‘Kamabadasan’, a Sri Lankan Tamil poet who was active in TamilCinema in the bygone decades. G. Govindarajulu Naidu, a noted filmmusic composer of that day, scored the music.

The second phase of trafficdiversion on Anna Salai to fa-cilitate work on the Metro Railproject will come into effect onSaturday, March 24.

The new changes will includea dedicated lane for MTC busesfrom Eldams Road traffic sig-nal to Gemini flyover, a dis-tance of about 1 km., on a trialbasis. “If successful, this willbe extended to a few other ar-terial roads after a study,” asenior police officer said.

This, some MTC officials feel, could be a precursor to a busrapid transit system (BRTS)in the city. “This is will defi-nitely be like a trial run for theBRTS. It will also come as awelcome relief for our driverswho had complained of extratravel due to the diversions putinto force earlier,” said an MTCofficial. MTC had also in-creased fares. This won’t bethe case this time, officialssaid.

New diversions on Anna Salai from today

2-wheeler riders and cyclistsfrom intruding into the dedi-cated bus lane. “While motor-ists won’t be allowed on the buslane, employees of various es-tablishments on the westernside of Anna Salai will be per-mitted on small stretches ofthe lane to allow them to reachtheir establishments,” anotherpolice officer said. There will betwo entry points along the lanefor this.

Police sources said that there

will not be any change in themovement of traffic fromGemini flyover towardsSaidapet while vehicles com-ing from Nandanam will be di-verted at the Eldams Roadjunction in Teynampet viaThyagaraya Road, North BoagRoad and G. N. Chetty Road toreach Anna Salai.

North Boag Road will bemade one-way with entry fromTheyagaraya Road and no en-try from G. N. Chetty Road. The stretch of G. N. ChettyRoad, from its junction withNorth Boag Road to Geminiflyover will be one-way with noentry from Sunder Street. Theexisting traffic movement onVijayaraghava Road will con-tinue.
