THE AVM STORY - 81

1000 join procession on eye donation

By Our Staff ReporterAbout 1000 persons partici-

pated in a procession to createawareness about eye donationorganized by Dr. Lankesh EyeHospital (Ashok Nagar) andLions Club of New Royal AshokNagar on Sept. 8.

Participants walked alongroads in Postal Colony and Ma-hadevan Street (West Mam-balam), and along 11th Avenue,

‘Chori Chori’ was inspired the famous Hollywood blockbusterand Oscar-winning classic made by the American movie mae-stro and celluloid poet Frank Capra - ‘It Happened One Night’(1934) - starring the legendary Clark Gable and ClaudetteColbert in the lead. It created movie history and elevated theproduction company Columbia to the top from Poverty Row,Hollywood!

The story of rich girl leaving home to escape an unwantedmarriage or similar reason has been made as film several timesin many languages of the world. Even in Hollywood, the masterof cinema William Wyler made it as ‘Roman Holiday’ (1957)which skyrocketed the unknown actress Audrey Hepburn toovernight stardom and Oscar Award winner. In India too it hadbeen made in Tamil, Telugu and Hindi too with success.

The entertaining comedy had, besides Raj Kapoor and Nargis, the talented funsters Master Bhagwan, Gope, Johnny Walkerand Mukri, character actor David and the stock villain of HindiCinema, Pran. It also had South Indian artistes Raja Sulochanaand dancers Kumari Kamala and Sayee-Subbulakshmi. Thefilm had excellent music composed by the famous Hindi filmmusic duo Shankar-Jaikishen. The director was Anand Thakur.

The interesting and main feature of Hindi films by Madras-based producers like Vasan and Meiyappan was that almostall of them were remakes of regional language films. Originalscreenplays were few and far between. As most films weremelodramatic, emotion-drenched sentimental dramas builtaround the Hindu joint family and its problems, North Indianfilm critics called them ‘Madras Formula’ cinema! But movie-goers loved them and for some years such films performed wellat the box- office.

The next AVM Studio Hindi film was ‘Miss Mary’ (1957),again a remake of a successful Nagi Reddi-Chakrapani bi-lingual hit ‘Missamma’(1955, Telugu, ‘Missiamma’ in Tamil).

The genesis of this film is interesting. The Tamil and Teluguversions were directed by the renowned filmmaker and one ofthe leading personalities of Indian film history, L. V. Prasad.

A titan of Indian cinema and celluloid colossus, AkkineniLakshmi Vara Prasada Rao, better known as L. V. Prasad, made many movie classics, box-office bonanzas and memo-rable movies in Telugu, Tamil, and Hindi. Besides making films,he also built studios and film laboratories in many placesaround the country such as Madras, Bombay, Hyderabad,Bangalore, and Bhubaneswar. Indeed he built a movie moguldomby sheer toil, sweat and blood. And talent and skills. His life isa Horatio Algerish tale of rags to riches, fascinating, interestingand inspiring - a tale of success against hurdles and heart-aches, groans and moans, and anxiety and agony.

Prasad was born in 1908 into a family of landed gentry butthe Great Depression of the 1930s took toll of the familyfortunes, leaving it in penury. Prasad was already married andhe abandoned ship and took off to Bombay in search of a living.Possessing hardly anything except the typical Andhra’s flairfor theatre and acting, he wandered all over Bombay looking forwork, any kind of work to keep body and soul together.

Often he starved and a kindly tailor permitted him to live inhis shop in return for sweeping the premises and keeping itclean. Prasad worked doing odd jobs, like studio watchman, theatre watchman, and playing the harmonium for a streetcorner magician for the grand salary of one rupee a day. Whata humble beginning for the spectacular career he built forhimself in later years!

During this period of struggle in Bombay, he worked as thegate-man for a cinema house where, years later, his Hindi film‘Ek Dhujhe Ke Liye’ was screened and established box-officerecords. He was accorded a reception at the same movie housewhere long ago he had stood at the gate.

H. M. Reddi, a pioneer of Indian Cinema, gave him the breakto play roles on and off the screen. In Madras, Reddi made twoTelugu films ‘Tenali Ramakrishna’ and ‘Gharana Donga’ inwhich Prasad played important roles on screen and also workedin the directorial departments behind the screen. However hefound the going unsteady in Madras and went back to Bombaywhere he was associated with the great Indian stage and screenperson Prithvi Raj Kapoor in his theatrical activities.

Once more Madras beckoned its finger at him and, during themid-1940’s he came back to Madras and this time for keeps.

(To be continued)

7th Avenue and 6th Avenue inAshok Nagar. The processionstarted from 11th Avenue andterminated in the hospital.

Sasi Balakrishnan (Presi-dent, Lions Club of New RoyalAshok Nagar) said that G.Senthamizhan (InformationMinister) flagged off the rally.Dr. S. Lankeshwaran (Manag-ing Director, Dr. Lankesh EyeHospital), Dr. T. Senthil and

Dr. N. Malathi (Directors), andother Lions Club memberswere present.

Sasi said that spectacleswere provided for 100 needywomen on the occasion.

She said that students whoparticipated in the processionincluded those from Ramacha-ndra University, Indus Sea-farers Training Institute (Man-gadu), D. G. Vaishanv College(Arumbakkam), C. K. N. Col-lege for Men (Anna Nagar), Kar-thikeyan School (Vadapalani),Rosily Matriculation School(Chitlapakkam) and Vadapa-lani Matriculation School.

During my formative college days, hostelrooms were perhaps 8 feet by 8 feet for aquartet of an assortment of the southerntongues. I was a fresher (my mother & cohaving gone back to Kerala, the ‘God’s owncountry’) and there was a 6-foot tall Teluguchap of 16, a South Arcot Muslim chap, aTamilian from Kancheepuram and I, aMalayalee, in the’ Umadabag Hostel’ onMount Road within the Govt. ArtsCollege campus.

Young tongues talk and talk and, like mosthostlers, the rest of the night is spent inmurdering the trillions of mosquitoes licensedby God to free treats of the best young blood. The poly-tongued room mates, while at thenight hunt, were at their loquacious best onthe topic of a leader called Annadurai, whichwent right over my head. But I pretended tobe abreast of the new southern breed ofleaders and lent my ears unsparingly.

Though Keralayeen E.M.S.Namboodiripadhad risen above the crowd and stutteredmiles ahead in the political circus, Anna gavethe powers that be sleepless nights.Thiruvengadam, my room mate, was an ar-dent Anna worshipper who would tongue-lash anyone who said a word against theleader. After my ascension to Presidencycollege, I never saw Thiru, naturally becausehe had by then conquered space and gone upto be in the reception committee to welcomeAnna who had made many snuff sellers inMadras millionaires, and they influenced theCorporation to name the housing complex“Anna Nagar” .

Now we have a Gandhi-topee wearing Annatilting against the Constitution and the In-dian Penal Code at Ram Leela grounds PoorAnna-2 does not even have pinches of snufffor pep thinking. External aids or a full stom-ach are not the modern weapons when selfflagellation in Gandhi-style is the politicalUSP discovered by A-2.

I hope he had consulted lawyers on thereach of Section 309 of I.P.C.which makesthe attempt to commit suicide a crime pun-ishable with a sentence of imprisonmentupto one year. The section drafted byMacaulay before Gandhi’s time has Anna inits sweep as his starvation could be fatalunless the attempt was stopped by law. Mr.Government, use the LAW at once.
