MOTHER OF GOD COVINGTON, KY

AUGUST 2, 202018TH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME

FROM THE PASTORDear Friends, May God bless and keep each and every one of you! In the second reading for this Sunday, Saint Paul asks, “What will separate us from the love of God.” After listing and rejecting various problems and difficulties which might separate us, he concludes that none of these will in fact be able to do so. In our own time, we might ask, will pandemic or social unrest, sickness or financial insecurity, violence or oppression, be enough to separate us from the love of God. And we might hear Paul say, as he said to the Romans, “No, in all these things we conquer overwhelmingly through him who loves us.” It is in uncertain times like the ones we know now, when we need reassurance that God will never abandon us, never turn His back on us. This knowledge of the absolute unconditional love of our God must be the rock on which we stand. My guess is that we will be dealing with the pandemic for at least another year and the social upheaval that we have seen, has been with us, and will be with us, for a long time. Life is always hard. It is always difficult. But we conquer overwhelmingly through Him who loves us. ARE YOU INTERESTED IN BECOMING CATHOLIC? In a few weeks, we will begin our Convert Instruction Classes for those who are exploring becoming Catholic. The date is still up in the air as we deal with the ever changing protocols regarding the pandemic. But we hope to begin by early September. Becoming Catholic is not just about learning basic teachings, but is about growing in a personal relationship with Jesus Christ. That is the primary concern of the classes to help the participants learn how to pray, and how to make Jesus Christ the central figure in their lives. If you are interested, please contact me by calling my cell phone at 859-816-3198.

RCIA FOR CATHOLICS The new protocols for dealing with the COVID-19 virus seem to indicate that we can only have very small numbers of people for any event, other than Mass. I had hoped to be able to return to the sessions for our RCIA For Catholics series with people distancing in church. But I am not sure that we will be able to do that for a while.

I think that what I will do, unless there is a loosening up of regulations for how many we can have in church, is to do the sessions online without a live audience. Everything is still in a state of flux. I will give you more information as soon as I am clear about what we can do.

ANTI-CATHOLICISM One of the very sad side effects of the recent civil unrest involving racism is a rise in anti-Catholicism. There have been a number of churches that have been vandalized, and statues of Saint Juniper Serra, of the Blessed Mother, and of Jesus, which have been damaged. One statue of Mary was spray painted with the word “IDOL.” I hope and pray that this is a momentary rise of such hatred and violence, but we must pray that it will not continue. Unfortunately, very justifiable concerns over racism and other forms of oppression and discrimination are stirring the coals of any number of hatreds and prejudices. Violence is never a solution to any problem. It unleashes emotions and responses that are impossible to control. We pray for an end to racism and all forms of violence and oppression, and for an end to religious intolerance.

SAINT JOHN VIANNEY This Tuesday, August 4 is the Feast of Saint John Vianney, who is the patron saint of parish priests. Also known as the Cure of Ars (cure is the French word for curate, or pastor, and Ars is the town where he served). John was born in 1786 and died in 1859. He is known for his deep devotion to Christ and to service of his parish. He was a fiery preacher and is reported to have pointed to the tabernacle and repeated loudly, “He is there! He is there!” In this, he called his flock to a deep relationship with Christ in the Blessed Sacrament and in the Mass. John Vianney was also known as a powerful confessor. People would travel from near and far to go to Confession to him. He would spend up to 16 hours a day in the confessional. Desiring the contemplative life of a monk, he ran away from Ars four times always to be sought out by his parishioners and brought back. To honor the 150th anniversary of Saint John Vianney’s death, Pope Benedict XVI declared the year 2009 to be the Year of the Priest. Please pray for all priests, especially this one, this Tuesday.

EIGHTEENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME AUGUST 2, 2020

SAINT DOMINIC Saint Dominic (1170 to 1221) was a contemporary of Saint Francis of Assisi and the two of them were the great reformers of their time. The orders that they founded were mendicants. This means that they owned nothing and begged for their food each day. The Dominicans became known as the Order of Preachers because that was their primary ministry, especially in a time of heresy. Saturday, August 8 is the feast of Saint Dominic.

DEDICATION OF THE BASILICA OF SAINT MARY MAJOR Saint Mary Major is one of the four major basilicas in Rome. The other three are Saint Peter, Saint Paul Outside the Walls, and Saint John Lateran. It is the oldest Christian church dedicated to the Blessed Virgin Mary in the world. Pope Francis has a particular devotion to this basilica. Whenever he leaves Rome on one of his journeys, he travels from the airport to Saint Mary Major to pray to the Blessed Mother. This Wednesday is the feast of the dedication of Saint Mary Major.

THE TRANSFIGURATION OF THE LORD When Jesus began telling His disciples about His coming death, their confidence in Him was shaken. The belief was that the Messiah could not die. Had they followed the wrong man? Had they left everything for a folly? If Jesus could die, then perhaps they would die with Him. It is one thing to die for the Messiah. It is something else entirely to die for an ordinary man. At this point, Jesus took His inner circle of disciples (James, John and Peter) up onto Mount Tabor. There they saw Him transfigured. He shone with the glory that they would see in His Resurrected body, and He was accompanied by Moses and Elijah, who represent the Law and the Prophets. Finally, there is the cloud (the same cloud that lead the Hebrews through the desert, and which would fill the Temple with God’s presence and glory) from which they hear God the Father say, “This is my beloved Son. Listen to him.” In this vision, the Apostles were encouraged to trust in Christ despite the pain and suffering of the Cross. Even though they had been party to Jesus’ Transfiguration, they still stumbled and fell during His Passion. Sometimes the reality of the cross overwhelms us as well. It may be our own crosses, or those of others

we care about that make us question and doubt that God is with us. It is sometimes difficult to see through the pain of the present moment to the Resurrection that is to come. Jesus’ Transfiguration is a promise to us as well. If we continue to place our faith in Christ, He will lead us through to the reality of rebirth and new life.

INTERNET SCAM A few people have received an email from someone claiming to be me, asking them for EBay gift card for some women going through cancer at the hospital. That request is not coming from me. I would never ask anyone for money by email or FaceBook or any other social media. Another message is: I need a favor from you. Text me back as soon as possible. This scam uses a made up [email protected]. My real email is [email protected]. Anything coming from any other email claiming to be me is fake. I hate that we live in a world where we have to be so suspicious and so cautious, but unfortunately, that is the way it is.
