By Our Staff ReporterChristmas crib in Holy Cross Church, South Boag Road, T.

Nagar will be on display till Jan.1.

Christmas crib on displaytill Wednesday Residents told to choose

flyover designIn the first public referen-

dum on a civic project inChennai, residents of T. Nagarhave been given the option tovote for and choose the best ofthree flyover designs.

Chennai Corporation invitedresidents of T. Nagar to a pub-lic hearing on Dec. 23 andshowed them three proposeddesigns to extend and connectthe congested South UsmanRoad and North Usman Roadflyovers.

They have 10 days to votefor the design they feel will workbest for the busy locality.Mayor Saidai Duraisamy saidthat the Corporation will, in alllikelihood, opt for the designthat wins the most votes.

Usman Road, with malls andstores selling everything fromjewellery to clothes and kitchenutensils across all price ranges,is a cauldron of vehicles, shop-pers and vendors between 9a.m and 9 p.m on all days withthe ill-conceived flyovers builtin a hurry more a hindrancethan a boon. With the numberof pedestrians and motoristsincreasing day by day, trafficpolicemen can only attempt tolimit the bedlam in an impos-sible situation.

The South Usman Roadflyover begins barely 50 metersfrom the T. Nagar bus termi-nus and ends in front of GRTThangamaligai. The NorthUsman flyover, also called theMahalingapuram Flyover, starts from Panagal Park andends at the KodambakkamHigh Road junction. The Cor-poration and the public havelong since given up on theflyovers as useless.

“The South Usman Roadflyover only helps commutersskip the Panagal Park junc-tion,” said Udaykumar, a rep-resentative of CMD Smith, theconsultant appointed by theCorporation to come up with asolution to the problem. “It doesnot even skip the Rangana-than Street junction, which isthe most congested part of thelocality.”

Residents say the flyovershave also made the roads oneither side very narrow. “Theflyovers were constructed with-out acquiring land on either sidefor proper roads, so the exist-ing roads are always con-gested,” said T. Babu, a resi-dent of T Nagar.

The Corporation decided tolink the two flyovers and ex-tend a single elevated road tillAnna Salai. This would allowmotorists to get from Maha-lingapuram to Anna Salai with-out getting stuck at any of thejunctions in the shopping hub.But consultants ruled out thepossibility of merging theflyovers because it will notbenefit enough motorists andwould require too much con-struction. “It will benefit only20% of the motorists,”Udaykumar said. “Most peopledo not pass through T. Nagarbut stop in the locality to shop,so we have to incorporate drop-off points in the flyover design. We cannot have only one longflyover,” he said.

CMD Smith came up withthree options that will allow

Residents to pick T.Nagar flyover design

motorists to get to CIT Nagarfrom Mahalingapuram. TheCorporation and the consult-ant presented the designs toresidents with the Mayor say-ing that no land will be acquiredfor the project.

The first option is to extendthe South Usman Road flyover— where there is the most con-gestion — on the southern sidetill just ahead of Boag Road. The North Usman Roadflyover will be left untouched.“This flyover will bypassRanganathan Street and theMadley Road junction,” saidUdaykumar. This option willcost Rs. 260 crores and requireland to be acquired for the ex-tended part of the flyover to be10 meters wide.

Pedestrian subways will beprovided across Madley Roadand Duraisamy Road. The roadbetween Duraisamy Road junc-tion and Madley Road junctionwill be only for pedestrians.

The second option, which will

cost Rs. 384 crores, is to ex-tend the South Usman Roadflyover both south and north,to just before Boag Road on thenorthern side and beyond theBazullah Road junction at theother end, to within 100 metersfrom the North Usman Roadflyover. The North UsmanRoad flyover will remain un-touched in this plan too.

The third option, which willcost Rs. 342 crores, involvesthe extension of the SouthUsman Road flyover as

planned, but with the construc-tion of a new flyover on thenorthern side from the GRTThangamaligai junction to 100meters of the North UsmanRoad flyover. The new flyoverwill be connected to the SouthUsman Road flyover at a heightof 2 meters, with a pedestriancrossing where they meet.

Residents who attended theDec. 23 meeting appeared un-sure as to which design is best, but a majority appeared toprefer either the second or thirdoption. Giving them more timeto think it out, the Mayor askedresidents to email their choiceto [email protected] and [email protected]) in 10 days.Drawings of the three designsare on the Corporation web-site.

The consultants said thatthe road has traffic of between4,000 and 6,000 passenger carunits per hour. Usman Road is3.5 km. long and the two sub-ways are each 800 meters long.

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR

Sir, Sewage waterhas been overflowingfrom a drain for thepast one week inSivasailam Street, T.Nagar.

I have calledMetrowater office andhave also sent anonline complaint butno action has beentaken so far to plugthe leakage.

The road is used bymore than 400 stu-dents on weekdays toreach MCN Schoolnearby. The overflow

Sewage overflow in Sivasailam Street

is emanating a foul smell and poses a healthhazard.

I appeal to the authorities to take immedi-ate action to stop the leakage. – R.Chandrasekaran, Sivasailam Street, T.Nagar.

Tenant verification is a futile exerciseSir, The recent order of Commissioner of Police to furnish details

of tenants with photographs to nearest police station in a prescribedformat is not practical and is not possible for the following reasons:

1) Nowadays the rents are quite high and for a 900 sq.ft flat, itranges between Rs. 18000 to Rs. 20000 in T. Nagar / Mambalam. Itis hard to find families who can afford such rent and owners are oftenforced to give it to working bachelors, especially women who thenshare the rent.

2) The tenants are reluctant to provide photos as mandated by thepolice as they are afraid of undesired consequences.

2) It is another headache for the owner when a tenant vacates, ashe will then have to provide details of the new tenant to the policestation. This is not practical and what will the police do with so manyforms, will it be filed and what about the guarantee of security of thepersonal data.

3) Since the police are already burdened with day-to-day law andorder maintenance, why burden them with such a futile exercisewhich involves lots of clerical work. – V. Thiagarajan, PostalColony 4th Street, West Mambalam

No advance noticegiven for

important civicmeeting

Sir, To obtain publicopinion on the proposedextension of UsmanRoad flyover and build-ing a new one on NorthUsman Road (T.Nagar), Chennai Cor-poration held a meet-ing on Dec. 23 at Sir PTThyagaraya Hall.

While one appreci-ates the concern of thecivic body to ascertainpublic opinion, whatone fails to understandis why there was noadvance informationabout the meet. Theresidents got to knowabout the meet only onMonday morning fromthe papers. As a result,a large numbers of in-terested residents couldnot attend the meet. Further, holding suchan important meet on aworking day does notmake sense. I hope thatin the future, to makesuch meets purposeful, the officials take care tohold such meets on aSunday or a public holi-day and give advancenotice about it.

Alternatively, thecivic body can elicit theopinion of the public byuploading the projectdetails on its website. – V.S. Jayaraman, 31,Motilal Street, T.Nagar

Timely action by civic authorities prevents traffic jam

Vidyalaya, Ashok Nagar. Traffic officials coordinated with Corpora-tion authorities and pulled the bus free with the help of a bulldozerstationed nearby.

Since this happened at around 8.30 a.m, the peak hour for bothschool students and office goers, it could have created a major trafficjam, but the authorities solved the problem within 30 minutes andrestored smooth flow of traffic.

The pit which was dug by Metrowater workers has not been filledproperly. – M. Seetharama Rao, Member-Secretary, Exnora –Chakrapani Street Extension, West Mambalam
