BN Reddy, Nagaiah, Bhanumathi and others saw themovie ‘Blood and Sand’ then running in the city at MinervaTheater, (the first air-conditioned cinema in Madras) morethan once and they were impressed by a melodious hummingdone by Rita Hayworth in it.

BN was keen on adapting it in his film and he began to workon it accordingly. At first BN thought that Bhanumathi couldjust hum it too but the melody and the tune developed byNagaiah were so fascinating that BN decided to have a fullthree minutes song. An All India Radio executive,Rajanikantha Rao, wrote the lyric for the song. It wasrecorded at the Newtone Studio, Madras by the notedaudiographer Dinshaw K. Teherani, who gave it a specialeffect by hanging a hollow metal dome above the mike.Bhanumathi was asked to sing into it. Those were the dayswhen there was no high-tech equipment and film technicianshad to rely on their ingenuity and creative juices to producesuch special effects.

Pioneers always work under difficult and trying circum-stances and Dinshaw was one such pioneer of Indian Cinema.

The song ‘’Ooooo oooooo ohohohoho Paavurama’ set SouthIndia on fire and became a rage and one of the all time filmhits. Indeed Bhanumathi sang her way to stardom with thissong in ‘Swargaseema’.

Ironically she had just then got married and was expectingher child and had thought seriously of bidding goodbye andall that to cinema and settling down to a life of happydomesticity with her film technician husband P. S.Ramakrishna Rao. However Dame Destiny had other plansfor her . As they say, ‘Inscrutable are the ways of Providence’.

One of the classics of South Indian Cinema which Nagaiahcreated in Telugu was his own production ‘Thyagaiah’ (1946).Earlier a Tamil version had been made based on the life of thelegendary Carnatic music composer and cult figure, SaintThyagaraja Swamigal. The lead role in this version had beenplayed by Mathirimangalam Natesa Iyer. While the film wasin Tamil, all the songs were of course had to be in Telugu. Some critics consider that this version was the better, music-wise. The Telugu version was the second, directed by Nagaiahwho played the title role too.

To make this film, Nagaiah worked against many hurdles, hassles and problems but nothing could deter his ambitionand desire to make it work. He spent a long time in visitingthe various places associated with the celebrated musicalsavant and took copious notes. He incorporated as many ofhis songs as possible in the film.

He struggled with one song which the Saint had composedon his visit to the famous Varadarajaswami temple inKanchipuram, “Varadaraaja ninne kori vacchithira”

(Nagaiah took a paternal interest in this writer when hewas a kid and active on Telugu stage under his stage name‘Master M. R. Dorai’. Years later he told him about theinterest and pains he took to sing this particular song.Nagaiah approached the immortal GNB who taught him howto sing it perfectly. The legendary Classical Carnatic musi-cian had sung it as a gramophone record in the early years ofhis career.

My dear boy& I sang it more than twenty times at thestudio before the recording was okayed but even then I wasnot satisfied. Only then I thought and finally realised that Icould never sing it like GNB even after one thousand and onetimes. I gave up trying and went on to sing other songs. I amonly Chittoor Nagaiah and not GNB!”, he said with hischaracteristic smile of humility.)

‘Thyagaiah’ not only turned out to be a ringing success butalso attained the status of a classic in South Indian Cinema.

Some time ago, the film was screened by the VintageHeritage and it attracted unusually large crowds.

NOTAThe imminent General Election promises

to the honest citizen, who is a voter, the bonuschoice of choosing none of the uglies whoharass the registered voter through the can-didates’ oily guys for his/her “valuable votes”by providing an escape route in the form of alegend named NOTA which, expanded, reads“None Of The Above”.

Isn’t our democracy beautiful since no elec-tion in any part of the world gives the electorsuch freedom not to choose from the array ofgoofs who want to take him/her to paradise. It amounts to telling the guys that the para-dise they promise may not be the one that thevoter wants to enter through the ballot box.

I am the monarch of my life as ordained bysome force that guides us all and no electionpromise can affect the course of my journeythrough this beautiful life of quiet and peaceand universal love that is my guiding starthat has shone on me for 80 beautiful years,20 years of which I owe to Anna Nagar Timesand its Editor for not balling up my stuff andthrowing it in the trash bin.

NOTA, the new election philosophy, will, ifnot frowned upon by judicial diktat, set freethe Indian mind and revolutionise the elec-tive process as an aid to humanism in allwalks of life. Angry Rahul may not get arepeat chance to shout “nonsense” and simi-lar sweet words at attempted legislativeimbecility. I think NOTA is our second free-dom movement which is our birthright .

Sir, With the repair work on the Kodambakkam Bridgecommencing, the diversion of traffic via Rangarajapuramflyover began on Sunday, October 6.

Even on a Sunday, at around 8 a.m the traffic came to acrawl on the flyover. Many MTC buses and other heavyvehicles which used to pass through Kodambakkam bridgewill now use Rangarajapuram flyover.

One dreads the traffic that can clog the bridge on weekdays. With festival days coming soon, Bazullah Road residents atone end of the flyover will surely have nightmares.

By a simple stroke of work, the authorities can ease thetraffic on Usman Road for T. Nagar users by clearingMambalam High Road of encroachments and making it fullymotorable. This will make also ease the traffic onRangarajapuram flyover. – Sriram, 90, Bazullah Road, T.Nagar; Ph: 98407 73410

LETTERS TO THE EDITORKodambakkam bridge traffic diversion affects

Bazullah Road residentsCorporation should be

strict in relocatingpavement vendors

Sir, Chennai Corporationhad fixed the deadline as Au-gust 15 for the pavement ven-dors to shift to the newly builtshopping complex in PondyBazaar (T. Nagar). This waslater extended by a month asthe vendors cited reasons ofpending work relating to thefitting of shutters and otherstructures in the complex intheir allotted spaces.

It must be pointed out thatthe complex was built 2 yearsago and only now after legalwrangles and negotiationswith the vendor union, thedeadline was fixed and ex-tended.

Now it looks like they havesought time till Deepavali toget into the new complex onthe plea that the allocatedrooms need to be made safeand secure to protect theirgoods. These excuses are noth-ing but delaying tactics em-ployed by the vendors. For,what safety and security dothey have now for their wareswhich they keep on the pave-ment? All these days, theyhave carried out their busi-ness in rain and shine with-out any protection from theweather. Now that theyhave pucca rooms at the com-plex, for which they must re-main thankful to the govern-ment, they should havemoved into the new complexby this time. They could haveeasily carried out necessarystructural work in the roomsallotted to them at the com-plex even as they conductedtheir business from the newpremises. This is what is nor-mally done by the shop-keepers whenever they under-take alterations to their shops.

One does not understandwhy the Corporation remainspliant? Having given the ven-dors a long rope, the Corpora-tion should have taken toughmeasures to make them moveinto the new complex. It re-mains doubtful whether thevendors will ever move at allafter Deepavali.

In the likely event of thevendors vacating the pave-ment, credible measures mustbe put in place by the civicbody to prevent once and forall any illegal occupationat the vacated places by anew crop of vendors/hawkers.This is most important and ifthe Corporation is unableto do this, then the efforts tode-congest will become mean-ingless and futile. While onehas the right to do business,in so exercising such rights,it should not come in the wayanother exercising his/herright. Had the civic bodynipped the illegal occupationof the public places like pave-ments which are meant forthe exclusive use of the pedes-trians, in the bud itself, it doesnot have to build complexes tohouse them. Just because avendor has been doing busi-ness from an illegally occu-pied place for a long period, neither does it become legalnor can he claim as his/herright to do business.—V. S.Jayaraman, 31 MotilalStreet, T. Nagar

Sir, I am Vasu-devan, parent oftwo school goingchildren living onAlagirisamy Salai(K. K. Nagar).

Even though myhouse is just 300meters fromPSBB School whe-re my kids study,I have a harrow-

Traffic nightmare near PSBB School entrance

ing time daily in walking them to and fro from the school.Parents with vehicles, private and school owned vans and

autos block off the road near the school gate by parking thevehicles haphazardly and making it difficult and unsafe forpedestrians. The plight is even worse for a number of seniorcitizens who come by walk to drop and pick up their grand-children studying in the school.

The van drivers and even educated parents in vehicles arecallous in their attitude and hurl abuses when asked to movetheir vehicles. At least during morning hours, there is atraffic constable who tries his best to regulate the vehiclesand make a passage for the walkers.

I request the school and traffic authorities to take up thisissue and demarcate an area near the school gate as a no-vehicle zone during school opening and closing hours to easeand safeguard the life of the pedestrians and students. – S.Vasudevan, Alagirisamy Salai, K.K. Nagar, Ph: 9840708344
