Sir, A 6-foot-wide concreteslab lies dumped close to themiddle of Neelakanta MehtaStreet near its junction withThanikachalam Street (T.Nagar) for the past severalmonths. The 6-inch-high slabwas used by Chennai Corpora-tion workers to cover a trenchdug by them but they neverhad the foresight to level it tothe road surface.

Since it is not visible at night,

2-wheeler riders often trip andfall while going over it. A coupleof exposed iron rods in the slabare pointing upwards, posingan added danger.

Last week the bumper of acar got badly damaged when itwent over it, and it is not thefirst time it has happened.

Foot overbridge unlikely to be used by seniorsSir, Foot overbridge work is progressing at the northern end

of Mambalam Railway Station, close to the long distance trainplatform.

Looking at the height of the bridge, it is anybody’s guess howuseful it will be, especially for the senior citizens.

Most I guess would continue to resort to crossing the trackto get across rather than using the bridge.

Instead, a five-foot-wide staircase connecting the footpathson either side of Duraisamy subway as is there in St. ThomasMount Station would have been a cheaper and a pedestrian-friendly alternative. – Radha S. Kumar, 1, BrindavanStreet, West Mambalam

TAMIL MOVIE MUSIC CHARMERSG.RAMANATHAN - 1

This is the beginning of more content to the popular ongoingseries ‘Tamil Cinema and Music’ which has gone on in thisnewspaper for 80-plus weeks. This new serieswill take an in-depthlook into the persons of both sexes who have contributedimmensely tothe growth of music in Tamil Cinema over thepast 80 years.

TodayTamil movie music is popular not only in Tamil Nadubut all overIndia. It has also crossed oceans, scaled mountainsand reachedaround the world to nations like the United Statesof America,Canada, Latin American nations, the United King-dom, Europe and, ofcourse, Sri Lanka, Far Eastern countrieslike Burma (now Myanmar), Singapore, Malaysia, Indonesia,Vietnam and Japan andother nations.

This series will narrate not only about music composers butalso about lyric writersand some poets of yester decades whosesongs have beenused in Tamil Cinema, like Bharathiyar,Bharathidasan, SaintThyagaraja, Tukaram, Thulasidas andseveral others. It will alsoinclude singers, both on-screen andbehind screen, male and female, whohave contributed withtheir melodious singing to the popularity andgrowth of TamilCinema Music around the world. Some of the playbacksingershave been as popular as onscreen movie stars, if not more, andthisseries will look at their work and contribution.

Some of the Move Music charmers have become icons ofTamil Cinemaand cult figures that are household names wher-ever Tamil isspoken in the world. Their contributionis immenseand outstanding. But, sadly, not much notice has been takenby scholars andfilm historians about this aspect of TamilCinema. This seriesproposes to fill up the lacuna and theglaring blanks.

This series begins with the first articleabout the legendG.Ramanathan, who has contributed invaluably to Tamilfilmmusic. Besides composing, he also sang quite a few songsandappeared on screen in minor supporting roles in somemovies. He alsoattempted film production at which he was notsuccessful, but sadlybrought him more grief than garlands!

Here it goes - the first article on the iconic music charmerG.Ramanathan who was affectionately known to many as GR.

When Tamil Cinema began to talk and sing in October 1931with’Kalidas’, a new era began in its history, and Tamilianswere morethan keen to hear their language, dialogues, andsongs coming out ofthe silver screen, which was earlier dumb!

Demand for Tamil talking and singing pictures began tosnowball andin 1932 a film was planned to be produced inBombay. Based on a playby Pammal Sambandam Mudaliar,‘Gaalava Rishi’ (most of the ‘filmhistorians’ called this film,‘Kalava Rishi’ which is absurd! ‘Kalava’

in Tamil means canal or ditch! This confusion arose becauseof theambiguity in Tamil script regarding certain alphabetslike ka, pa, ga,da, and such).. It was a play was about theadventures of Arjuna, with SageGaalava. This was at firstplanned in 1931 as a silent film but, while it was still in theplanning stage in Bombay, ‘Kalidas’flashed on the screenbreaking barriers and the producers decided tomake this too asa talking and singing picture. The person who wrotethe script, dialogues and lyrics and composed the music was a Tamilscholarwell trained in Carnatic music with experience in Tamiltheatre, now totally forgotten, G Sundara Bhagavathar. He had ayoungerbrother who went along with him to Bombay to assisthim in composingthe music by playing on the harmonium inwhich he was well versed. That brother was G.Ramanathanwho would later not only make waves but alsocreate history inTamil Cinema and its music.

(This writer had the pleasure and privilege of knowingRamanathanfairly well and had sat in adjoining chairs with himat many Englishmovies at the now demolished Rajakumaricinema in T.Nagar. G.R nevermissed any musical from Holly-wood, carefully took notes, and absorbedby mental osmosis themusic, both in the background and on screen. One such moviewas all about the Rock and Roll music. Fascinated by itheasked his then composing assistant, G. S. Mani, a Carnaticmusicianwith knowledge of Western music, all about rock ‘n’roll...)

MAMBALAMTIMES

By M. A. SADANAND

NO HOLDS BARRED

LIFE-GIVING INDIAMahatma Gandhi or M.A.Sadanand famously said that, if you

take an eye for an eye, half of India will be blinded.I think Chief Justice P. Sathasivam and his two companions on

the Supreme Court bench had read this great quotable quotebefore they sat to do what others imagined would be the finalobsequies as a balm to the soul of handsome Rajiv Gandhi whosebody was blasted out of this beautiful world by the human bomb, aided and abetted by the threesome.

Law is not an ‘ass’ as many ignorant people think but the onlybalmy concoction that makes life slide smoothly in which processa large retinue of people make a living.

When Sathasivam was here and we two were the warriors forAmma government, we were the closest of the pack of nearly adozen lawyers. I found him the most human of the lot. His furtherascension to the Bench here and then to the Supreme Court madehim become the deliverer of Murugan, Santhan, and Perarivalan, the crowning glory of a career that is going to end when he reacheshis65th birthday soon.

I feel the American wisdom may be imported by our governmentwhich would allow the Chief Justice to go on and on until he feelsbored with judicial work after 90!

Krishna water arrives to offerrelief to cityBy Our Staff Reporter

Krishna water from Andhra Pradesh has finally arrived inUthukottai, Thiruvallur district, about 150 km away from Chennaion March 30. The Andhra Pradesh government has agreed to releaseKrishna water to Chennai for three months. Krishna water proves tobe crucial at this time when the water resources are fast-depletingand the groundwater level is also on the decline.

While half of the amount received would be utilized for the city’swater supply, the remaining amount would help step up storage ofthe city reservoirs maintained by Metrowater department, which arecurrently at 30 per cent of their storage capacity. Currently, resi-dents are being supplied with 585 million litres of water on alternatedays.

Every 500 cusecs that the reservoir receives is equal to 1,200million litres a day, which is enough to significantly improve pipedwater supply to the city, according a senior Metrowater official.
