Before taking a single step inside Montgomery’s newly remodeled showroom in Sioux Falls, it quickly becomes apparent that this space is unlike any furniture store in the area. If the modern-inspired and innovative landscaping on the store’s facade aren’t the first clue that Montgomery’s has much more to offer, then the sight of the featured sculpture (part of Sioux Falls’ Sculpture Walk) or the floor-to-ceiling exterior windows that flood the entire space with natural light are sure to be the tipoff.

Once inside, a cursory trip around the showroom’s sprawling 60,000 square feet reveals a host of amenities: from the Coffee Bar (ready and waiting to provide customers with coffee, cappuccino, or other complimentary beverages), the newly expanded Design Center (home to Montgomery’s free design services), a massive stand-alone Sleep Center, and newly expanded departments for all Flooring and Window Treatment needs. Eric Sinclair, President of Montgomery’s, and a fifth generation family member to play a role in the store’s ownership is particularly excited for the impact the

increased space will have on Montgomery’s customers. “Many of our departments have expanded: we have tons of new lighting options, an expanded bedding department, the new Hunter Douglas Gallery, and we now have twice the square footage dedicated to flooring. We knew that more space was an important step in providing the very best selection to our customers.”

But what is absolutely most striking about Montgomery’s is the unbelievable amount of inspiration and detail that is packed into every square inch of the space. Hundreds of vignettes fill the showroom floor, illustrating complete roomscapes with options for coordinating lighting, artwork, throw pillows, decorative accessories, and flooring in every single space. Movable walls partition the display “rooms”, with each wall featuring a unique custom paint treatment applied by a local artist. The mobility of the walls provides Montgomery’s Design Team and Visual Merchandisers the option for unlimited vignette layouts and the ability to completely transform the showroom space whenever new product arrives.

In order to stay on top of trending products and pieces, Montgomery’s Buying Team travels out each season to seek out the newest styles and the latest technology that the Market has to offer. As a result, in addition to the top-of-the-line brands like Bernhardt, Ekornes, Flexsteel, Hooker and Stanley as well as Hunter Douglas, Karastan, Shaw and Mohawk, and Serta that Montgomery’s has been carrying for years, the newly remodeled space also showcases a host of both modern and of-the-moment trending pieces. Throughout the space, elements of sleek Lucite, antiqued brass, and polished chrome are mixed harmoniously with supple leather and weathered wood (a specific wall constructed of Black Hills Aspen logs particularly comes to mind) in a symphony of style that’s unlike anything else locally.

It’s exactly this attention to detail and dedicated trend watching that Eric feels makes Montgomery’s and the newly remodeled showroom so special. “We place a major focus on fashion and design which allows us the opportunity to fill the store with unique pieces and items that aren’t going to be found anywhere else in the area. Those modern and trending pieces that customers are seeing in national design magazines, it’s our hope that our patrons can come in and find those items, plus so much more, right here at Montgomery’s.”

Once relegated to above the dining room table, pendants are breaking free. Available in wide variety of styles and options for every space, pendants offer many advantages over other lighting options. From a lack of a floor footprint (leaving ample room for whatever furniture arrangement one desires) to their adjustable height and light direction, to a streamlined approach to unsightly cords, pendant lights help to capitalize a room’s layout and utility.

We all love the warmth hardwood can bring to a room, but sometimes wood isn’t the most practical option for every space in a home. Bathrooms, kitchens, basements, and other spaces that are repeatedly exposed to humid and wet conditions are often best suited for luxury vinyl or tile options.

Luxury vinyl is particularly appropriate in locations like a laundry room or kitchen where one might stand often and would enjoy a softer surface underfoot. The material is designed to “give” so that each step is cushioned and supported, effectively reducing the risk of back and leg pain from overuse. Likewise, tile is an excellent choice for kitchens and bathrooms, as the material is easily wipeable and water resistant, providing a clean, safe environment for the homeowner.

This new store is 60,000 sq. ft. and offers a huge selection of fine furniture as well as complete flooring, window treatment, mattress and clearance departments. Carrying many of the same brands as our Madison location and even some from the Sioux Falls location, Watertown is the first stop for area home shoppers. In a business culture when chain stores and national franchises rein supreme, Montgomery’s Furniture, with its 126 years of experience and five generations of family leadership, is a bit of a novelty (to put it lightly). But, despite its unique status, Montgomery’s success has certainly been no fluke. A combination of pioneering spirit, hard work, and a endless drive to continually improve, cultivated over five generations, have been key ingredients in the business’ longevity.

Montgomery’s Furniture was founded by George H. Montgomery in 1888, a full year before South Dakota would even be admitted for statehood. The original store was opened in Alexandria, South Dakota, but expansion and customer demand eventually led to the opening of stores in Mitchell, Sioux Falls, Madison, and Watertown. Continued success and dedication to their customer base has led to further expansion and renovation in all of the stores, with the current Sioux Falls renovation being the newest and largest of those endeavors.

When he first opened, George had a simple mission to create a furniture store that not only provided the highest quality of products, but that also cultivated a standard of customer service that was second to none. Fifth generation owner Eric Sinclair who, along with his father and mother Clark and Connie Sinclair, and his wife Neala, own and operate the stores in Sioux Falls, Madison, and Watertown, emphasizes that this mantra is just as strong now as it was when his great-great grandfather first opened. “Quality of service has been, in my opinion, a major factor in Montgomery’s 126 year success. We have very high expectations for our product and our brand, and we personally play a role in almost all processes from start to finish.” Sinclair also emphasizes that the “Family Atmosphere” at Montgomery’s extends well beyond the ownership. “We’re distinctly aware that Montgomery’s success is a direct correlation to the many quality employees we have at each of our stores and also to the loyal customers and community base that’s been cultivated throughout the years. We wouldn’t be where we are without these groups and individuals and it’s our commitment that they all feel welcomed into the Montgomery’s Family.”

For those with a design conscience mindset, the word “recliner” doesn’t generally elicit overwhelmingly stylish images. But with recent advancements in the industry, a new generation of recliners has been introduced that not only look more stylish, but are also more comfortable and more convenient to use.
