in Kan-nammapet Burial Ground (New Boag Road,T. Nagar) is yet to be used even though it wascommissioned in March after a couple of trial runs.
The unused chamber is covered with overgrownbushes that have also spread on to the outlet pipesoutside the chamber’s building.
Chennai Corporation workers at thecrematorium said that on an average they havetime only to cremate 5 bodies between 8 a.m to 5p.m and the second chamber when put to use couldease the situation.
They said that the 2-hour power cut is alsoaffecting operations and have appealed to theElectricity Board to exempt crematoriums fromdaily shut downs.
When this reporter con-tacted the concernedCorpo-ration official, he said that the secondchamber will be put to use shortly.

There is a waste dump yard at the junctionof Mambalam High Road and UnnamalaiAmmal Street. The garbage dumped with de-bris, drainage residuals, animal waste and thelike is left uncleared for a long period in time.
The dump yard is perpetually overflowingwith garbage as people from the nearby slumadd to the trash. 1It emits a foul smell makinglife difficult for residents in the nearby areasand to pedestrians walking on the street toreach Kodam-bakkam railway station.
Because of the garbage there is severemosquitoe menace and we are at a high risk ofexposure to dengue and malaria. Mambalam railway station ataround 11.30 a.m on Sundaywhen Govindammal and hersister Krishnaveni (part of the
Railways cleaning staff) foundan explosive-like substance ina dustbin near the RPF officeon platform no. 2.
The station was crowded atthe time and a bit of panic set
in among the commuters.According to Krishnaveni,
she and her sister found a foot-long pipe-like object while emp-tying the garbage bin.
There was a red tape aroundit and a piece of thread washanging out from one end, shesaid.
When we took it to the sta-tion master, he alerted the
RPF who immediately tele-phoned the bomb squad, sheadded.
According to RPF personnel,the bomb squad which arrivedimmediately checked the ob-ject and ruled out that it was anexplosive device.
A large crowd which had gath-ered in the meantime soon dis-persed.
