1.1 U l t r a s o n i c s :

E l a s t i c waves of f r e q u e n c i e s beyond the a u d i b i l i t y r a n g e of

normal human e a r , a r e c a l l e d u l t r a s o n i c waves or i-'trasound.

9 U l t r a s o u n d f r e q u e n c y r a n g e e x t e n d s from 1600 Hz t o 10 Hz. I t s

upper l i m i t d o es not depend upon any i n t r i n s i c p h y s i c a l p r o p e r t y of

u l t r a s o n i c waves of such high trequencies.but on the t e c h n i c a l

p o s s i b i l i t y of p r o d u c i n g such waves.

1.2 U l t r a s o n i c a p p l i c a t i o n s :

U l t r a s o n i c waves have a c q u i r e d the s t a t u s of an i m p o r t a n t

p r obe f o r t h e s t u d y of s t i u c t u r e a nd p r o p e r t i e s of m a t t e r .In b a s i c

s c i e n c e s , t h e s e waves a r e used t o p r o v i d e i n f o r m a t i o n on the

? b e h a v i o u r of m i c r o s c o p i c p a r t i c l e of m a t t e r . Through the h i g h e r

o r d e r e l a s t i c c o n s t a n t s i n v o l v e d in the p r o p a g a t i o n of t h e s e waves,

an i n s i g h t i n t o t h e i n t e r a c t i o n in s o l i d i s o b t a i n e d . The a b s o r p t i o n

and d i s p e r s i o n of waves p r o v i d e i n f o r m a t i o n about r e l a x a t i o n

The u l t r a s o n i c waves a r e b e i n g used f o r d e t e c t i o n of f l a w s ,

t e s t i n g of ma t e r i a 1 s , niechan i ca 1 c l e a n i n g of s u r f a c e s e t c . In medical

s c i e n c e s , the waves a r e b e i n g used tu d e t e r m i n e s t r u c t u r e and

b e h a v i o u r of b i o mo 1 ecu 1os, to d e t e c t hone f r a c t u r e s , t u m o u r s . f o e t a l

c o n d i t i o n s and f o r p h y s i o t h e r a p y . b l o o d l e s s s u r g e r y , c a r d i o l o g y ,

g y n e c o l o g y e t c . P r e s e n t day a p p l i c a t i o n s of u l t r a s o n i c s a r e emerging

m a n i f o l d in the f i e l d of f o r e n s i c s c i e n c e s , s p a c e r e s e a r c h and in

war f a r e .

The u l t r a s o n i c v e l o c i t y and a b s o r p t i o n c o e f f i c i e n t

measurement have f u r n i s h e d , method f o r s t u d y i n g m o l e c u l a r and

s t r u c t u r a l p r o p e r t i e s of f l u i d . There e x i s t s c l o s e r e l a t i o n s h i p

between t h e u l t r a s o n i c v e l o c i t y and chemical or s t r u c t u r a l

c h a r a c t e r i s t i c s of m o l e c u l e s of f l u i d . T h i s g i v e s a p r o p e r t y of

b a s i c i m p o r t a n c e t o sound v e l o c i t y in m o l e c u l a r t h e o r y of f l u i d .

Upto 1930 u l t r a s o n i c v e l o c i t y d a t a in very few l i q u i d s was

a v a i l a b l e . The improvement of e x p e r i m e n t a l t e c h n i q u e s made the

i n v e s t i g a t i o n m a n i f o l d , both q u a l i t a t i v e l y and q u a n t i t a t i v e l y .

Two i m p o r t a n t p a r a m e t e r s a s r e g a r d s t o u l t r a s o n i c waves a r e

t h e i r v e l o c i t i e s and a b s o r p t i o n c o e f f i c i e n t s . By s i m p l y m e a s u r i n g

u l t r a s o n i c v e l o c i t y and d e n s i t y of l i q u i d , many a c o u s t i c a l

p a r a m e t e r s can be c a l c u l a t e d , which throw l i g h t on the m o l e c u l a r

e x p e r i m e n t a l t e c h n i q u e s a v a i l a b l e to s t u d y them a r e NMR, microwaves,

u l t r a v i o l e t and i n f r a r e d s p e c t r o s c o p y and u l t r a s o n i c s . While NMR

t e c h n i q u e r e f l e c t s t h e e f f e c t on the p r o t o n b e a r i n g m o l e c u l e s . The

microwave a b s o r p s i o n , p r o v i d e s i n f o r m a t i o n t h r o u g h the d i e l e c t r i c

c o n s t a n t , n e u t r o n and X-ray s c a t t e r i n g , h e l p s in the s t u d y of

m o l e c u l a r motion. The s p e c t r o s c o p i c t e c h n i q u e s p r o v i d e u s e f u l

i n f o r m a t i o n on i t i t e r mo 1 ecu 1 ar i n t e r a c t i o n , when i n t e r a c t i o n e n e r g i e s

Study of u l t r a s o n i c v e l o c i t y measurement i s s t i l l g o ing on a s

d e c r e a s e of a b s o r p t i o n i s h i g h e r f o r NaBr and NaI whereas the

a b s o r p t i o n of NaCl and KC1 s o l u t i o n r e m a i n s c o n s t a n t on t h e o r e t i c a l

b a s i s . A b s o i p t i o n , d i s p e r s i o n and r e l a x a t i o n a r e s t u d i e d in c a r b o n -

d i s u l p h i d e in terms of t h e complex and f r e q u e n c y dependent bulk

v i s c o s i t y c o e f f i c i e n t of t h e l i q u i d by Narasimham and t h e l a r g e

a b s o r p t i o n in c a r b o n d i s u 1 p h i d e i s a c c o u n t e d f o r , by i t s bulk

v i s c o s i t y . A b s o r p t i o n and d i s p e r s i o n of c o m p r e s s i o n a 1 waves in l i q u i d

a r e c l o s e l y a s s o c i a t e d with the bulk v i s c o s i t y of the l i q u i d which

3 1 becomes complex and f r e q u e n c y dependent under t h e a c t i o n of

u l t r a s o n i c waves.

V a r i o u s e q u a t i o n s of s t a t e f o r hard s p h e r e have come forw a r d .

R e c e n t l y K h a s a r e m o d i f i e d an e q u a t i o n of s t a t e and found t h a t

t h e r e i s a c l o s e a greement with computer s i m u l a t i o n r e s u l t . S.S.

Many t h e o r i e s have been a p p l i e d t o l i q u i d m o l e c u l e s and

e q u a t i o n of s t a t e have been d e r i v e d . U l t i r a a t e aim of a l l s t u d i e s i s

to g e t the p a r a m e t e r s c l i a i a c t e i s i n g t h e l i q u i d s t a t e and the

m o l e c u l a r f o r c e s e x i s t i n g between d i f f e r e n t t y p e s of component

m o l e c u l e s in the m i x t u r e of two or t h r e e l i q u i d s . The r e c e n t s t u d i e s -70

of Tabhane have shown t h a t t h e n a t u r e of v e l o c i t y vs c o m p o s i t i o n

c u r v e s a r e smooth with a p o s i t i v e or n e g a t i v e c o n c a v i t y when any of

the AA, AB or BB i n t e r a c t i o n s p r e d o m i n a t e . The hydrogen bonded

complex f o r m a t i o n in a number of s y s t e m s has been i n d i c a t e d by a

peak in v e l o c i t y and c o r r e s p o n d i n g d i p in c o m p r e s s i b i l i t y vs

a c r o l e i n , a c r y l o n i t r i l methy1-methacry1 a t e a r e a , ^ - u n s a t u r a t e d

c a r b o n y l compounds.They a r e compounds of s p e c i a l i n t e r e s t in b i o ­

m e d i cal t e c h n o l o g y and i n d u s t r i e s . P y r i d i n e i s a s t a b l e h e t e r o c y c l i c

compound.Groups and d e r i v a t i v e s of p y r i d i n e l i k e compouds a r e found

in body s y s t e m .

To u n d e r s t a n d the b e h a v i o u r of t h e s e b i o - l i q u i d s , namely
