TAMIL CINEMA AND MUSIC - 58The Tharai Ticket Aasaami (TTA) could whistle at the

goings on on screen or sneeze on cue if the lovers on screen gottoo close for a kiss! Such joys and privileges were denied to thebetter-placed person on the higher classes of bench or chair!

Rajam saw many silent films in a tent cinema located in anopen space behind the P.S. High School compound. To his lastdays he remembered the name of a movie he saw decades agoin parts ‘Nal Damayanthi’, produced in Northern India! Obvi-ously, it was the second version of the familiar tale made in1927 by the founding father of Indian Cinema, DadasahebPhalke at Nasik. It was 8123 feet in length. Rajam evidentlysaw the Phalke movie of 1927, which was possibly screened inparts! He was then in his preteens.

The first permanent movie house of Mylapore, Kapali Talk-ies, came up in late 1930s and, until the recent years, it servedthe Mylai-wasis well. In that era, it was rather isolated withareas like Raja Annamalaipuram, Mandavelipakkam, andsuch not having come to existence.

The first superstar of South India of India, M. K. ThyagarajaBhagavathar, inaugurated Kapali Theater for which he wasgiven a silver hammer as memento!

(There have been fanciful explanations why a hammer, of allthe things, was given but none of them is complimentary topoor MKT!)

(Foreigners especially Americans wonder why movie housesin India are called “Talkies”! One American diplomat in Madrasasked this writer what that word meant! In the early days, movie house or tents screened only silent films. When moviesbegan to talk English in 1927, and Hindi, Tamil and Telugu in1931, Kannada in 1934, and Malayalam 1938, cinemas ac-quired sound equipment and the theaters came to be known as‘talkies’ as opposed to places screening silent films. For sometime, even after movies began to talk in India, silent films werestill being made in south India. To distinguish the two, the word‘talkies’ was used in India. (This word is not in use in the West.)

Meanwhile, back at Kolhapur, then a ‘native’ state ruled bya maharajah, V. Shantaram, one of the greatest filmmakersof India then, making his way in movies with the celebratedPrabhat Pictures, wrote to a Madras-based movie magazine,“Sound and Shadow” seeking help to make a Tamil film usingthe sets, props and all of his Hindi film, “Sairandhri” (1933,India’s first film in color). The film had not done well and thecompany was trying to cut its losses by launching a Tamil filmusing the same re-usable materials. The magazine was beingrun by the talented trio, Muthuswami Iyer (later filmmakerunder the name, ‘Murugadasa’), A. K. Sekhar (art director, production designer, and master of all, and later a big name inSouth Indian Cinema), and K. Ramnoth (brilliant technicianand genius of Tamil cinema, sadly neglected today). A richimpresario and fine arts-lover, and talent-scout and all, G. K.Seshagiri, financially backed them.

Soon the trio, Seshagiri, the Mylapore lawyer SundaramIyer, his children Rajam, Jayalakshmi and the youngest son,the seven year old prodigy, S. Balachandar and members of anamateur drama troupe boarded a train at Madras to Miraj (arailway junction) en route to Kolhapur.

Accompanying them was Papanasam Sivan as music com-poser, blissfully unaware as the train chug/chugged its waythat he was on his way to fame and fortune!

Rajam faced a movie camera for the first time in “SeethaKalyanam” (1933). A Prabhat production, it was directed bythe well-known Marati and Hindi filmmaker of his day, BaburaoPhendarkar.

Interestingly, the so-called Tamil film historians, in theirblissful ignorance, have been writing and speaking in Tamil andEnglish spreading misinformation about the making of SeethaKalyanam”. (To be continued)

T. Nagar not suited for smart city projectSir, This refers to the report published in the ‘Letter to the Editor’ column

of Mambalam Times recently, in which an apex Residents’ WelfareAssociation of the neighbourhood had expressed its concern regarding thechoice of T. Nagar as a suburb ideal for the smart city project.

I wish to support the Association in this case as many streets in theneighbourhood are in a bad condition. The civic body and its authorities arelax in monitoring the work of the contractors. Further, there is no propercoordination of work between the different departments of the civic bodywhich often leads to dug-up roads, leaking sewage lines, exposed cablesand open drains. In this regard, I would like to point out that the bylane ofLakshmi Street, West Mambalam is not cleaned by Corporation sweepers. When asked they disown the responsibility by saying that the lane doesn’tcome under their purview. So, without addressing these long standingissues, envisaging developing T. Nagar as part of the smart city project isfarfetched and will be just be another exercise in the wastage of the taxpayers’ money. R. Lakshmi, Flat 3C, Mahalakshmi Flats, 69/12,Pushpavathi Ammal Street, West Mambalam

Appeal to patch trench dug in Baroda StreetSir, I reside

in BarodaStreet, WestMambalam.Metrowaterdug a longtrench in ourstreet to carryout some re-pair workmore than amonth back. After thework was completed, they refilled the trench loosely with the earth dugout and left. After the recent showers, the loose soil gave in, and the wheelsof my vehicle got stuck in the pit and I had to arrange a tow van to pullit out. The various civic bodies dig pits and trenches all over the place andthen do not take measures to close them properly and repatch thedamaged portion of the road.

It is causing havoc in our street. It could lead to more such incidents. Theroad is slippery as well. Will Chennai Corporation officials take immediateaction to relay the road or atleast patch the damaged section with tar andblue metal? R. Krishnakumar, Baroda Street, West Mambalam

E-Service centers give ‘No Service’!Sir, The e-service centers are not functioning properly. From my own

experience, I find that the staff at these centers dodge their work byshirking responsibility and make the public run from pillar to post. AtTaluk Office, K. K. Nagar, the staff openly say that they have been askedto stop work related to ration cards or voter ID cards as the system is badlyprogrammed. I have received my smart ration card with my old addressthough I had corrected it three years back.

I have approached the office four times to get the correction done, buteach time I receive a SMS after a few days stating that my complaint hasbeen resolved even without it being attended to. I wonder if this kind ofnegligence is happening with the connivance of the senior staff or thepersons hired to do the job are dodging their work. As far as Aadhar cardis concerned, after waiting for 3 hours, I got it updated and a printout ofacknowledgement was given to me. I am unable to get guidance fromanybody as to whether I will get a fresh Aadhar card after alterations aremade or I have to once again struggle to get the card waiting in a queue forlong hours. H. Nagesh, 40, 8th Avenue, Ashok Nagar

Appeal not to close erstwhile SBT, Usman Road branchSir, I hold a savings bank account in the Usman Road, T. Nagar

branch of erstwhile State Bank of Travancore which was recentlymerged with State Bank of India. In the aftermath of the fire in ChennaiSilks, I understand that a decision has been taken to close the branch, which is quite shocking to old time account holders like me.

After the merger, a meeting was held in BKR Convention Hall, T.Nagar, to which the customers of the Associate Banks of SBI such asSBT, SBH, SBBJ and SBM were invited. The customers who partici-pated in the meeting had requested the SBI officials not to close theexisting SBT Branch in Usman Road, T. Nagar, on any account as it

The signal justdisplays ‘100 seconds’ all the time which misleadsvehicle drivers. The signal controls the trafficcoming from the flyover side proceeding furtheror towards Bazullah Road. Many confused driv-ers just halt before the signal for sometime beforerealizing it is not functional leading to traffic jam.The Traffic Dept. should take immediate steps torepair the signal. Shankar Narayanan, T.Nagar

has been doing busi-ness for decades andcustomers were alsohappy with the ser-vices rendered by thebranch.

I appeal to the offi-cials in SBI to allay thefears of customers, asshutting down the op-erations of the branchwould cause immensehardship to customersand disturb them bothmentally and physi-cally. V. S. Jaya-raman, 31, MotilalStreet, T. Nagar

Residents discuss long pendingissuesBy Our Staff Reporter

“Let the smart city plan be for the future. The need of the hour isproper basic facilities and resolving of the several pending civic issues”,is what most residents had to say during a meeting held last week.

The residents’ meeting was held on June 18 in Tanjore Road to discussthe long-pending issues in their locality.

“Where is the question of a smart city, when poor sanitation andappalling road conditions have not been addressed for decades”, saidPrabhakar, the president of Tanjore Road Residents’ WelfareAssociation.

“I have been a resident of the neighbourhood for over 65 years andseveral streets that were dug up for constructing storm water drains, have not been relaid”, he added.

“Encroachments are rampant on the main roads which are occupiedby street hawkers. Vendors and roadside eateries dump their waste inthe bins reserved for residents, which attracts stray cattle and dogs.Sweepers are not regular in cleaning the roads”, he complained. Hefurther said that the sewage lines in T. Nagar have not been relaid forover 65 years.

S. Jayaraman (a resident of T. Nagar for 25 years), said that roadsare being relaid without milling. It means the level of the ground floorof the older houses will become lower than the level of the relaid roadsleading to flooding during heavy rains intermixed with sewage waterthereby exposing the residents to communicable diseases. Jayaraman, who also moderates a Facebook page for T. Nagar residents, said thatwater is becoming a serious issue for the residents as wells deeper than25 feet are starting to yield pale yellow water. This has increased theneed to depend on tanker lorries for everyday consumption.
