Take a ride and pay later withMetrorail smart cardsBy Our Staff Reporter

If there is a minimum Rs. 10 balance in the smart card, CMRL allowsa commuter to take a ride and the difference in the journey amount isadjusted in the next recharge.

However, this facility can be availed of only once as the balanceamount in the smart card is deducted from the trip amount and thecommuter cannot travel again without recharging.

Metro rail officials said that their ticketing systems have beenprogrammed to allow commuters to walk out of a station after a ridewithout having to pay the entire ticket price as long as they have aminimum balance of Rs. 10 in their smart card.

The difference in the trip cost is recorded in the system by linking itto the smart card number and automatically adjusted when it isrecharged again by the commuter.

CMRL introduced smart cards when it launched its first servicebetween Koyambedu and Alandur in June 2015.

But CMRL made smart cards mandatory after it launched theunderground section between Nehru Park and Thirumangalam in May2017.

More than 10.7 lakh smart cards have been sold since June 2015 ofwhich 8.4 lakh cards are in use.

To encourage commuters to buy smart cards, CMRL gives a 10%discount on ticket prices.

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR

Storm water drain width reduced in Habibullah RoadSir, A contractor approved by Chennai Corporation has undertaken

repair of the storm water drain at Habibullah Road-Sivasailam Streetjunction. I am enclosing a photograph of the shoddy work that is beingcarried out. It may be seen that the width of the drain has been reduced.Sivasailam Street, Habibullah Road and the nearby streets often getflooded during rains. Now, with the reduction in the width of the stormwater drain, its capacity to carry rain water is further reduced.

It can also be noticed from the photo that brackish water is stagnat-ing in the drain. It only proves that restaurants and hotels in the streethave illegally linked their waste water pipeline or even the sewage lineto the storm water drain. I appeal to Chennai Corporation to inspectthe shoddy work carried out by the contractor and ensure that the sizeof the storm water drain is increased and not decreased as being donenow. I also appeal to the officials to take action against hotels lettingout waste water into the storm water drain. R. Chandrasekaran(President, Exnora International) and the residents ofSivasailam Street and Padmanabha Street, T. Nagar

Garbage dumped outside T. Nagar South Post OfficeSir, When I visited T. Nagar

South Post Office located inDamodharan Street, T Nagar lastweek I found garbage dumpedaround the post box installed out-side the building. The stink fromthe putrefying garbage was un-bearable and even extended intothe post office. I feel sorry for thestaff who work there in suchman-made unhygienic surround-ings. Anyone wanting to post aletter in the box will have to tread on the garbage. A car parked in frontof the post box also made the job difficult.

I appeal to the public not to dump garbage in public places and throwit instead in Corporation rubbish bins. S. Sampath, 39, MannarReddy Street, T. Nagar, Ph: 99529 01365.

Increase in vehicles cramps public spaceSir, In the last few years, there has been a big increase in private

vehicles. Even middle class families today have cars and more than one2-wheeler. But the infrastructure in terms of roads and parking spacehas not increased proportionately.

With no space within their compound, many owners park their carson road margins and pavements. In a packed commercial neighbourhoodlike T. Nagar and West Mambalam, the situation is even worse withoutsider vehicles also cramping the public space for parking.

In narrow streets and commercial lanes, it is a common sight to seevehicles parked on pavements, forcing pedestrians to walk on the road. The increase in influx of vehicles has also led to increase in air and noisepollution. It is for us to safeguard the environment for the present andthe future of our children by living within our needs and means. M. B.Jayaram, Lake View Road, West Mambalam

Congratulations galore thanks to Mambalam TimesSir, I thank Mambalam Times for the report last week about my

receiving the ‘Shreshta Purusha’ award recently for my matrimonialservices. I am happy to inform you that, after the publication of the reportlast week, I received a number of phone calls from your readers applaud-ing my achievements and congratulating me for receiving the award and. When I went to Ayodhya Mandapam the next day, the office-bearers anda number of devotees also recognized me from the photo published inMambalam Times and congratulated me. I am overwhelmed by the reachof your publication and the good work it is doing for the neighbourhood, thanks to the quality of its content. I am a regular reader and also alongtime client of your publication. I wish Mambalam Times many moreyears of service to the neighbourhood. N. Panchapakesan, Founder,Chennai Sai Sankara Matrimonials, Ph: 98403 30531.

Vijayaraghava Road-Dr. Narasimhan Salai junctionaccident-prone

Sir, The traffic signals installed at the junction of Vijayaraghava Road andDr. Narasimhan Salai have not been functioning for more than eight years. The traffic flow from Pondy Bazaar and Teynampet sides is heavy andaccidents often take place at this unmanned junction. It is a rarity to seetraffic police regulating traffic even during peak hours. Pedestrians havea nightmarish time crossing the junction as vehicle drivers rarely give wayfor them. During peak hours vehicles crisscross from all directions aseveryone is in a hurry to move ahead. I request the traffic officials to takeimmediate steps to regulate the traffic at the junction to prevent accidents.I also appeal to them to install speed breakers to slow down vehicles. K.Ramakrishnan, 44, Dr. Narasimhan Salai, T. Nagar

Noise pollution by mobile vendorsSir, I am a senior citizen living in K. K. Nagar

with my wife for the past 11 years. It is commonnowadays to see mobile vendors selling theirwares by continuously playing recorded mes-sages loudly over a public address system toattract customers.

Many mobile vendors like vegetable and fruitsellers, knife sharpeners, old clothes buyers goaround the neighbourhood streets in the after-noon selling their items using high decibel loudspeaker systems that create high levels of noisepollution. It disturbs the residents, especiallyelders who wish to have a quiet afternoon nap.

I am sure these vendors do not seek any licenseto operate such loud systems in public places. Iappeal to the police to take action against suchvendors. S. Sivasubramanian, 994, 74th Street,12th Sector, K.K. Nagar. Ph:99402 80073

Action sought against use of loud hornsSir, The 2.5 km long 18th Avenue in Ashok Nagar is one of the busiest

roads with even heavy vehicles and MTC buses plying on it. Added to thealready existing noise and air pollution caused by the heavy traffic are theextra loud horns installed by a number of motorists. These loud hornsdisturb students preparing for exams, senior citizens and those recuper-ating from sickness or bedridden with chronic illnesses. The traffic policeshould take strict action against vehicle owners who use such unauthorisedhorns. They should also declare roads in residential areas as ‘No HornZones’. V. Vijayalakshmi, Ashok Nagar, Ph: 99620 83755
