The M41 water main is a large diameter pipeline that supplies Melbourne’s inner suburbs with drinking water. The water main is almost 100 years old and is at high risk of failure.
Melbourne Water is planning renewal works on the water main, which runs from Merri Creek, Northcote to Wellington Parade, East Melbourne.
Project overview Construction works are required to upgrade the water main,
which will involve disruption to residents and businesses located along the water main route.
Works will move progressively along the final alignment, although there may be multiple work sites operating at once.
Impacts are expected to include noise from construction activity, temporary local road closures and the presence of construction crews.
Work in front of individual business and residential properties will take place over a period of weeks and will move as the work front progresses. We will work with our construction crews to mitigate these impacts and provide more information as the planning process progresses.

What’s involved The M41 water main travels from Merri Creek, Northcote
to Edinburgh Gardens, under Queens and Alexandra Parade
through to George Street, Fitzroy. The route runs the full
length of George Street until it crosses under Victoria Parade,
and then runs around Fitzroy Gardens to Wellington Parade.
See map for details of the route.
From November 2016 onwards you may see workers
undertaking site investigations along the alignment. If there
are any noisy investigation works being undertaken, affected
residents shall be informed prior to works.
It is expected that construction will begin in mid to late 2017,
and will take 12 to 18 months to construct.
Working with the community Melbourne Water will be working with all stakeholders
involved in this project, including residents, local business,
VicRoads, City West Water, City of Melbourne and
City of Yarra, in the lead-up to construction.
Benefits Once complete, this project will enable Melbourne Water to:
• Reduce water losses and disruption to residents and business from leaks
• Continue to supply high quality, safe and reliable drinking water
• Increase capacity within the water supply network
This project contributes to Melbourne Water’s strategic vision of ‘Enhancing Life and Liveability’ in the greater Melbourne region.
