Games Workshop Group PLC, a London Stock Exchange quoted company which
was listed in 1994, has been in business for 30 years. At the core is a niche
business – Games Workshop. This business designs, manufactures and markets

Games Workshop is the largest and the most successful tabletop fantasy
wargames company in the world. Our major brands are Warhammer and
Warhammer 40,000. In addition, we hold a licence for The Lord of the Rings
tabletop battle game. At the heart of the Hobby are the millions of gamers, who
spend their time collecting, creating, painting and building up the armies which
they go on to command on a carefully prepared tabletop battlefield.
Who We Are
Games Workshop began its life in the UK but
now has direct sales operations in the UK,
the United States, Canada, France, Germany,
Spain, Australia, Japan, New Zealand,
Belgium, Holland, Denmark, Sweden and
Italy. With around 70% of sales coming from
outside of the UK, we are truly international.
What We Do
We design, make and sell miniature soldiers.
To that end we also design, make and sell
game systems and accessories of
extraordinary variety. Our vast range of
plastic and metal soldiers and rulebooks is
the foundation of an almost infinite hobby.
Our design centre is in Nottingham and we
have manufacturing and distribution facilitiesin Nottingham and Memphis, TN.
Games Workshop is a vertically integrated
business, retaining control over every aspect
of design, manufacture and distribution of
our models and rulebooks. Products are
sold through our own chain of over 300
Hobby Centres and more than 4,000 other
toy and hobby shops around the world.
These outlets are complemented by our
mail order and online sales businesses.
How It All Began
Games Workshop was founded more than
30 years ago by three game fanatics who
began selling handmade, classic wooden
games from their homes in London. They
went on to develop a chain of general
games shops. In 1981 Games Workshop
helped to found Citadel Miniatures Limited,a manufacturer of metal miniatures based at
Newark-on-Trent, in Nottinghamshire.

A few years later the company moved
closer to Nottingham and began to develop
and expand, producing wargame systems
under the Games Workshop name.
Tom Kirby, the Group's Chairman and Chief
Executive, joined us in 1986 as General
Manager. In December 1991 Tom led a
management buy-out and in October 1994the company was floated on the London
Stock Exchange.
In October 1997, all UK based operations
were relocated to the current HQ in
Lenton, Nottingham. As well as helping to
consolidate our UK businesses, the move
provided Games Workshop with space to
create Warhammer World, the premier
wargaming arena. These new facilities haveallowed the UK business to stage increasing
numbers of gaming tournaments and
special events. Today Lenton is a vibrant
and exciting Hobby base and has become a
place of pilgrimage for gamers from around
the world.
Tabletop Wargaming
Wargames are not board games - for there
is no board! A wargame is a battle with
model warriors played out on anyconvenient surface such as a tabletop,
desk, or even the floor. Tape measures and
rulers are used to gauge the movement of
troops and the ranges of their weapons.
Dice are employed to resolve the
effectiveness of shooting and hand-to-hand
fighting - but ultimately a wargame is a
game of strategy in which generals must
balance caution and daring in pursuit of
victory.

The Games Workshop Hobby provides hours of enjoyment and a healthy amount of
good plain fun! Like all good hobbies it requires specialist knowledge and a
commitment to building expertise and relationships with fellow hobbyists.
Collecting
As soon as you buy your first model soldier
you’re a collector. Some hobbyists like
owning a wide variety of miniatures to paint
and display, but most assemble them into a
mighty army of warriors to defeat their
friends in tabletop battles. A constant
stream of new product releases means
there’s always something else for thehobbyist to add to his army.
Painting
Painting miniatures is an intrinsic part of the
Games Workshop Hobby. Our hobbyists
invest a significant amount of time and
effort personalising their models, which
goes some way to explain why there is only
a relatively small second hand market in our
miniatures. Practice makes perfect and
many hobbyists become highly skilledpainters. By following one of our painting
guides, even a beginner can produce a
miniature he can be proud of.

Gaming
Tabletop gaming can be anything from small
scale skirmishes between opposing
warbands to epic conflicts involving huge
armies of hundreds of Citadel Miniatures.
New gamers can begin playing straight
away. Painting miniatures needn’t hold a
beginner up. The important thing is to get
those troops on the battlefield and startlearning. After a few games hobbyists soon
want to expand and paint their collection to
fight larger and more varied battles.
Modelling
The look of the battlefield is almost as
important as the miniatures themselves.
Scenery plays a huge part in any tabletop
battle game, both tactically and visually.
Modelling includes everything from making
simple hills, to constructing lavishly detailed
centrepieces for commanders to fight
battles over.

Warhammer is a high fantasy world of dark magic and powerful gods, populated by
mighty heroes and foul monsters. Proud men stand shoulder-to-shoulder with noble
Elves and grim Dwarfs against the unending attacks of their countless enemies. Vile
rat-like Skaven crawl beneath every city, the restless dead stir in their graves, and
daemons lead the mutated hordes of the Chaos Gods into war. This is the Warhammer
World, a realm of grim adventure, where only the strongest survive.
Building a Warhammer army
There are many nations and armies in the Warhammer world. Each of these fights in a different way:
some races are masters of magic, others rely on their natural strength, yet others recruit ferocious
monsters. Even two armies of the same race can be quite different because there are many kinds of
warriors, wizards, war machines and monsters to choose from. The Warhammer rulebook is
supplemented by individual books outlining the background history for each of the individual races,
along with army lists, special weapons, magical items and spells.

The Empire is the most powerful nation of Men in
the Old World. Protected by fine steel armour and
the blessing of their gods, and supported by the
cannon of the Empire’s Gunnery School and proud
Orders of Templar Knights, the Empire army
marching to war is a splendid sight.
A proud and noble race, the High Elves have refined
their martial skills and magical prowess over the
centuries. They have watched empires rise and fall
and ferociously repel all who seek to conquer their
homeland, fabled Ulthuan.
Bitter and defiant, the Dwarfs of the World’s
Edge Mountains are the last survivors of a
prosperous kingdom who seldom venture far
from their mountain keeps, preferring the
surroundings of their ancestral strongholds and
the memory of their former glories.
Deep within the steaming jungles of the south, the mighty
temple-cities of the Lizardmen rise amid ancient trees and
cloying swamps. At the heart of the Lizardman armies are
the powerful Saurus, hulking reptilian warriors spawned
solely for the purpose of war.
The knights of feudal Bretonnia are famed across the
Old World, known as much for their chivalry and
honour as for their devastating charges.
The Wood Elves dwell in the enchanted forest of
Athel Loren, having tamed the wild beasts and
befriended the strange creatures of that realm.
Far to the east of the Old World lie the savage OgreKingdoms. A single Ogre has enough brute strength
to destroy a farmstead or village, whereas the armies
that march west from the Ogre homelands are
powerful enough to destroy empires.

Orcs and Goblins are ferocious green-skinned raiders andrelentless warriors, whose ceaseless attacks are always
threatening to engulf the entire Old World in eternal warfare.
In the cold wastes of the north, the followers of the
gods of Chaos gather in their thousands. Hosts of
barbaric marauders and armour-clad warriors, the
Hordes of Chaos, pour forth from the bleak
wastelands to wage war against the soft-bellied
wastrels who inhabit the rich lands of the south.
The Tomb Kings of Nehekhara have commanded their
Undead legions for thousands of years, protecting their
ancient pyramids from thieves and their domains from
the impudent young races of the world.
Spiteful and hate-filled, the Dark Elves are raiders
who drag unfortunate wretches from across the
world back to their evil home: Naggaroth, the
Land of Chill.
Malevolent Skaven, horrific mutant rat-men, lurk in
the sewers and tunnels beneath every city. Guided by
the prophets of their dark god, they devise terrifying
weapons in their quest to overthrow the world.
The Vampire Counts are immortal rulers of the
evil Undead. When they go to war, entire
graveyards give up their dead as the spirits of the
fallen take up arms to fight once more.
The dark forests of the Warhammer world are
infested with nightmarish, misshapen beasts. These
Beasts of Chaos surge from the wild places to burn
and destroy all before them.

Warhammer 40,000 is a game of strategy and skill set in the far distant future. The 41st
millennium is a dark, forbidding place, ravaged by thousands of years of conflict. Across this
gothic universe armies struggle for victory in a battle to the death.Foremost among Humanity’s defenders are the fearless Space Marines: genetically engineered
super-warriors who are armed with the best weapons available. Supporting them are the vast armies
of the Emperor, made up of legions of men and the tanks of the Imperial Guard. Against these loyal
troops are ranged the alien armies of the Tau, savage Orks, enigmatic Eldar and unfathomable
Tyranids. And always, lurking in the shadows, is the unholy taint of Chaos: once-loyal Space Marines
now turned traitor and in the service of the unspeakable Daemon Lords of Chaos.
Building a Warhammer 40,000 Army
The Warhammer 40,000 rulebook is supplemented by individual Codex books outlining the background
history for each of the individual races, along with army lists and special weapons. These troops can be
supported and backed up by a vast range of military hardware. Gigantic starships, huge rumbling tanks,
mechanical war machines and aircraft all help the tabletop commander to steer his army to victory.

The Space Marines are humanity’s elite, superhuman
soldiers protected by the mightiest weapons and armour
in the galaxy. For their unswerving devotion to the
Emperor and the destruction they bring to His enemies
they are known as the Angels of Death.
Ten thousand years ago, half the Space Marine Legions
betrayed their oaths to the Emperor and turned to the
dark Gods of Chaos. These same Chaos Space Marines
live on in the Eye of Terror, protected by their daemonic
masters, launching raids upon the hated Imperium.
The Eldar are an ancient race whose civilisation once
spanned the galaxy. Now they battle the younger races of
the universe for their very survival, guided by their mystic
seers and defended by dedicated Aspect Warriors.
The Necrons have awakened from their sixty million-year
dormancy to plague the living once more. Although the
Imperium of Mankind has only recently acknowledged theNecrons’ reappearance, their monstrous gods feasted
upon colossal stars before the planets themselves were
born.
The Tyranids are an utterly alien horror from a distant
galaxy, driven by the implacable will of the Hive Mind.
Swarms of bio-organisms strip entire planets bare in their
endless hunger.

The Emperor’s Inquisition commands numerous diverse
forces, specially trained to counter foes whom the
numbers of the Imperial Guard and even the training of
the Space Marines cannot overcome. The Daemonhunters
of the Grey Knights Space Marine Chapter, the witch-
hunting Sisters of Battle and the Kill-Teams of the Ordo
Xenos all fight their own wars against the enemies of
Mankind – the daemon, the mutant and the alien.
The Imperial Guard is Mankind’s primary and most
numerous defence, numbering billions upon billions of
soldiers from all the worlds of the Imperium. The Guard
fights at every level, from platoons assigned to defend a
small frontier colony to massive army groups fighting wars
that stretch across dozens of star systems.
Young and dynamic, the Tau seek to bring enlightenment
to those who will join them. Unfettered by Mankind’s
superstitions and fear of technology, its armed forces are
superbly equipped with weapons of immense power and
battlesuits that can withstand the fiercest attacks.
Striking without warning, the piratical Dark Eldar ravage
colonies and even entire planets in their search for fresh
prey. It is rumoured that being captured by these twisted
aliens is a fate worse than death as they feed upon the
very souls of their victims.
Orks are the most widespread and warlike race of
aliens in the bloodstained galaxy of the 41st
millennium. Should they ever organize and unify, they
would quickly overwhelm and crush all opposition.

Over the years Games Workshop has produced many other miniatures for Warhammer and
Warhammer 40,000 as well as other tabletop wargames and their complementary miniature ranges
based on our extensive intellectual property. These products take a deeper look at particular aspects of
the worlds we have created and are of great appeal to our passionate community of veteran hobbyists.
Games like Necromunda focus on the actions of a
small gang of fighters whose abilities develop over
time, while Epic uses miniatures far smaller than
the other games to allow for massed battles with
hundreds or thousands of troops and mighty war
machines. These games, along with many models
from our back catalogue, continue to be available
through our online and mail order services. We
also continue to provide support for older games,
primarily through their own dedicated websites.

Veterans looking to further their hobby experience will also look to the extensive
Forge World range of specialist, highly detailed resin models from the worlds of
Warhammer and Warhammer 40,000. Designed to be compatible with and
complementary to Games Workshop's games, Forge World products
include gigantic war machines and creatures, vehicle and aircraft kits,
various scenery items and smaller specialist models designed to
appeal to the most discerning gamer and modeller. The models,
along with a growing range of supporting books, are designed,
marketed and sold exclusively by Forge World.

Games Workshop is a vertically integrated business. This is important on several
levels. It means we retain complete control over quality - essential for niche
products, we are able to use unique manufacturing technologies and to ensure
that our obsession with detail and getting the Hobby right is shared by those
people who make the miniatures.
Our staff are passionate about the way we
create miniatures, design games and
manufacture and sell the resulting product.
Quality is key to everything we do; it is our
obsession.
Designing the Product
There are thousands of miniatures in the
Games Workshop range and getting newmodels and rules just right is crucial to
satisfy the demanding, indeed fastidious,
requirements of Hobbyists throughout the
world. To do this the Nottingham Design
Studio employs more than 100 full time
staff, all of whom are committed
Hobbyists. Highly skilled artists work in
acrylics, inks and other media to create the
outstanding pieces of atmospheric fantasy
art, which grace the rulebooks, army booksand boxes. The minutely detailed master
miniatures are hand crafted out of resin
putty on a simple wire frame using dental
tools by sculptors. Meanwhile games
developers work to create and refine the
rules that will allow the new troops to
venture into battle. These design processes
take many months and sometimes years of
hard work and dedication.
Making Fantasy a Reality!
Once the final design of a miniature is
approved the master models are handled
in one of two different ways. Miniatures
to be cast in metal are sent to the
master mould makers in the UK and US
who use them to make precise silicon
rubber moulds. These moulds are
then used by casting teams based
in Nottingham and the US whomake some 500 tons of pewter

miniatures a year. Those to be made in
plastic begin their journey through a long
pattern making process in Wisbech, UK.
There our tool makers use a combination of
modern technology utilising dibital
scanning and high speed engravers
alongside the traditional skills of the
pantograph to carve the steel tools which,
when passed onto our plastics factory, will
manufacture the hundreds of tons of
plastic injection moulded miniatures we
make each year. Once completed all our
products are passed to our packers who
prepare the troops for their journeys
around the globe.
Getting Product to the Hobbyist
Customer service is the key to Games
Workshop’s existence, and the warehouse
and distribution teams in Nottingham, and
Memphis, TN, are dedicated to getting
product to all customers, be they our own
Hobby stores, individuals or independent
retailers as swiftly as possible. While our
sales teams around the world work hard to
help independent retailers to build the
Hobby, our store teams work to ensure our
own Hobby Centres offer gamers the very
best Hobby experience we can provide.

Fantasy wargaming grew out of the much older hobby of historical wargaming. WarhammerHistorical provides gamers with rules and ideas for re-enacting great battles from allperiods of history, from Classical Antiquity through to the Old West.
The characteristic darkness and excitement of these worlds has made them attractive tocomputer games developers over the years, and as a result several titles have been producedunder license from Games Workshop. Recent hits include Fire Warrior and Warhammer
40,000: Dawn of War, with a selection of Warhammer titles in development.
Those fans looking to explore these worlds in greater depth will be rewarded with role-playing games such as Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay, which replaces tabletop miniatures
with paper and imagination and is supported by a wealth of background information.
The strong visual imagery of Warhammer and Warhammer 40,000 is also used in a
range of card games, introducing collectors of other niche hobbies to the worldsand imagery of Games Workshop.
