DESK

The Tata Institute of Social Sciences, now in its 83rd year, continues to impact social policies, programmes and ground level action for the betterment of society. As a community-engaged University with campuses in Mumbai, Tuljapur, Guwahati and Hyderabad, the Institute's vision is to create socially relevant knowledge and transfer that knowledge through its various teaching programmes and field action projects. With over eight decades of experience, the Institute creates highly knowledgeable and skilled human service professionals and empowers them to find sustainable solutions to people's problems, social issues and social transformation. The M.A in Globalisation and Labour programme, offered by the School of Management and Labour Studies, is a unique program developed by the International Labour Organisation, as a part of its Global labour University initiative. I am pleased to convey that a batch of talented young men and women are ready to take up the challenging responsibilities of the professional world. In 2017, the MA in Globalisation and Labour course completed a decade of dispensing high quality Policy and Labour Relations professionals to the industry. The course provides a framework to understand the diversity of experiences of globalisation and its impact on global social economy.

The students of this course hail from diverse backgrounds such as technology, arts, science, business and law. This program has been meticulously designed to ensure that our students have an understanding of global economic and societal realities with theoretical context as well as analytical acumen.

The unique competency of this learning stream is that itinculcates professionals who are versatile and sensitive to human diversity. While they have been well equipped to handle the analytics and content creation, they have been dealing with plural context of understanding human collectives, organisational lives and dynamics of livelihoods. As budding professionals they are an ensemble of creative initiation, collaboration and participatory design making.

It is with pleasure that I present the profile of students of MA in Globalisation and Labour to the professional world. The faculty and staff of the School of Management and Labour Studies have worked relentlessly to transform these minds into well-rounded, thinking individuals; and skilled future leaders. We have ignited their minds towards critical thinking and reflections and prepared them to, achieve success and excel in their chosen domains. These students were exposed to highest academic rigor, critical pedagogies, academic integrity, and practical applications of theoretical knowledge through classroom discussions, seminars, conferences, block internships, field exposure and by working on case studies. We have taken them beyond the frontiers of the prescribed syllabi and equipped them to face the toughest challenges in real time professional worlds. M.A in Globalisation & Labour is an integral part of the visionary initiative of Global Labour University (GLU) promoted by the International Labour Organisation (ILO) and supported an academically administered by TISS. In the process of globalisation, the economy in particular and society in general, are transforming at an incremental speed. The M.A. in G&L is aimed at providing new generation management competency to address the forthcoming challenges in research, training and optimising the contribution of human resources in the development process at micro as well as macro level. The beneficiaries or the students of this program in TISS have developed the competency to justify the aim of the GLU.

ABOUT THE INSTITUTE

The Tata Institute of Social Sciences (TISS) was established in 1936 as the Sir Dorabji Tata Graduate School of Social Work. In 1944, it was renamed as the Tata Institute of Social Sciences. The year 1964 was an important landmark in the history of the Institute, when it was declared Deemed to be a University under Section 3 of the University Grants Commission Act (UGC), 1956. The Institute has a NAAC accreditation rating of 3.89, the highest for any University in the Country.

Since its inception, the Vision of the TISS has been to be an institution of excellence in higher education that continually responds to changing social realities through the development and application of knowledge, towards creating a people-centred, ecologically sustainable and just society that promotes and protects dignity, equality, social justice and human rights for all.

INTERNATIONAL COLLABORATIONS


National CSR Hub | LMRF

The National CSR Hub has come up with the concept of a national level repository of social sector projects that are scrutinised for programmatic and financial soundness and ready for receiving funds. Thus, was launched the National CSR Hub Proposal Bank at the third TISS-UNICEF Regional Capacity Building Workshop for Empanelled Development Partners, at India Habitat Centre, New Delhi on 25th April 2016. The Proposal Bank is a collection of the outstanding flagship project proposals of the empanelled development partners of the Hub. Companies are in search for such outstanding projects and NGOs need funds to implement such projects. There is often a disconnect between the two sectors which has caused a delay in the implementation of CSR activities.

National CSR Hub

The Labour Market Research Facility (LMRF) is a think tank that specialises in macro and micro labour market, household sample surveys, working and living condition surveys and macro labour market analysis. The think tank has won some of the prestigious global research grants, and has created exemplary capabilities in extraction and analysis of large sample databases such as National Sample Survey and Annual Survey of Industry.The LMRF is actively engaged in policy advocacy in areas such as formal and informal work, skill development, technology and labour, internal and external labour market, and livelihoods. The LMRF’s research is globally acclaimed and since its inception, it has generated research papers on diverse themes on labour market, including labour market flexibility, employability, labour laaws, vocational training, public work, informal work, industrial relations, personnel economics, and wages.

ABOUT THE COURSE

Inception of the Course

This course was conceptualised by a congregation of economists, sociologists, anthropologists and legal and industrial experts under the aegis of the International Labour Organisation (ILO), with the vision of establishing it as an integral part of the Global Labour University (GLU). The GLU is a network of trade unions, universities, the Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung (German Think Tank and Research Organisation) & the ILO (International Labour Organisation), aimed at delivering high-level qualification programmes comprising labour economics, labour laws and industrial sociology. It offers Masters courses in four different countries on labour management, organisational development, international labour standards, labour market analysis, sustainable development, social justice,social and economic policymaking. The Universities under the purview of this network are University of Kassel & Berlin School of Economics & Law in Germany, University of Witwatersrand in South Africa, State University of Campinas in Brazil, Pennsylvania State University in United States and TISS and Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) in India. The formative discussions started in the year 2004 and in the year 2007, the M.A. Globalisation and Labour program was born in TISS.

ABOUT THE COURSE

Vision and Pedagogy

The course was started in 2007 as a humble attempt to integrate trade unionism into the decision-making mainframe of organisations. It has since then metamorphosed into one of the most holistic centres of labour studies in South Asia with a vision to produce efficient and empathetic professionals. We strive to provide long term sustainable solutions to organisations and enterprises. The pedagogy includes theoretical understandings, practical application of theory through fieldwork, individual & group assignments, case studies, workshops and dissertation.The course stands unique among other conventional Labour Studies and Management courses in the country as it upholds the values of social justice, fairness and equity and whilst acknowledging the need for growth.

This year, the class witnessed participation of students from France, Iran, China and Kazakhstan. The M.A. programme in Globalisation and Labour, School of Management and Labour Studies at the Tata Institute of Social Sciences, Mumbai has been cultivating academic brilliance, managerial finesse, belligerent activism and game changing policy-interventions through Vaishvik: “The Annual Labour Conclave of TISS” and Vaishvik Lecture Series: Interaction between Students and Professionals. They serve as platforms to stoke discourse on employment, income disparity, social security and other labour issues, alongside developing sustainable models for the future.

Vaishvik and Vaishvik Lecture Series aim to commemorate the growth of MA in Globalisation and Labour from a humble attempt to integrate trade unionism into the decision-making mainframe of organisations has to one of the most holistic centres of labour and employment studies in South Asia.

Corporate Social Responsibility

A special emphasis on Project Management, Impact Assessment and on-field experiences in both, communities and organisations have enabled the students of Globalisation and Labour to develop a keen understanding of Corporate Social Responsibility and imbibe the very spirit of compassionate capitalism. In tandem with the National CSR Hub in TISS, the students are well acquainted with the nuances of CSR Law and M&E of CSR Projects right from its inception till the final assessment.


CORECOMPETENCIES

An in-depth analysis of labour laws, industrial jurisprudence, trade unionism, organisational behaviour and collective bargaining, positions the students of M.A. in Globalisation and Labour as unique experts and commentators on Industrial Relations.
