With numerous gated community apar tments mushrooming in and around the surroundings of Mogap-pair, sales executives of vari-ous companies are lamenting that they are finding it diffi-cult to meet customers and achieve targets given by their respective team managers. On the other hand, office-bearers of different residents' welfare associations say that with security of apartment dwellers being a key question they can't let random sales representatives to enter their complexes.

"I have to achieve certain sales targets given by my team manager on a weekly and monthly basis. For this it is imperative for me to meet customers and explain to them about our product and then convince them to give

me a sales order. But now with many peo-

ple moving into apartments I am unable to make door visits and it is affecting my incentive. At many apart-ments, the watchmen them-selves turn us away saying they have instructions from the residents’ association of-fice bearers not to allow us in," complains Keerthivasan.

"If there is any secu-rity concern they can check our identity cards and let us in. Why should we be treated like suspects," asks Keerthivasan, who works as a sales execu-tive in a firm that deals in water purifiers.

In fact at some plac-es such as Mallihai Apartments located on Kavimani Salai-Eri Scheme Main Road they have placed a

board outside the apartment expressly stating that sales-men are strictly not allowed.

"It is not as if we are treat-ing all salesmen with suspi-cion. But if something hap-pens we will be held account-able. So we don’t want to take any risks," said an office-bearer of a DABC Apart-ment in Nolambur. But not all sales activities are banned.

Sometimes associations al-low private firms to put up stalls on their premises on holidays.

"The other issue is that residents don’t want to be disturbed. They get angry with the security guards if they allow any sales executive inside. Therefore, we choose to ban their entry," says the office-bearer.

he Church Road in Mogappair East has be-come pedestrian unfriend-ly after it was dug up some

months ago for undertaking civic works. While the dug up road has been covered with soil and in some places with concrete, due to the haphazard nature of work pedes-trians are finding it difficult to walk on the road. The Church Road begins at the junction of the Mogappair East Bus Depot and ends several hundred metres away at the point where it turns into the road leading to the Maduravoyal New Bridge.

Pedestrians complain that at many places on this road, more particularly on the Bus Depot-New Bridge side, slushy soil, potholes, debris and uneven surface can be seen making it extremely difficult to walk. Several apartments, a hos-pital, commercial establishments and a school are located on this road making it high-traffic density

zone during peak hours in the morning and evening.

“As it is many of the interior and bus route roads in Mogappair do not have a footpath for pedestrians. As such we have to depend on the fringes of the road to walk. While in other streets commercial establishments have eaten into large parts of what would otherwise be walking spaces, on Church Road the digging up operations carried months ago have turned the roadsides into a mess. We are unable to walk on the fringes and are instead forced to use the road,” complains Ahmad Ali, a long-time resident of Mogappair East.

People complain that the potholes have worsened their plight. “Because of the potholes many two wheeler riders actually avoid several parts of this road and instead swerve to ride on better surface patches. Due to this often they come close to brushing against pedestrians virtually giving them a scare. It is no exaggera-tion that this road has become a nightmare for pedestrians,” laments Das, a resident of the Mogappair Village who walks to work on this road on a daily basis.

“The civic authorities must clear all debris along the roadside and relay the roads so that everyone can have their spaces on this busy road. It should be done early and not after some accidents occur,” says Mubarak, another resi-dent of Mogappair East.

ere is one more reason for those in the neighbour-hood to travel by

the Metro Rail. Now bi-cycles can be hired at the Metro Rail Station in Thi-rumangalam, Anna Nagar Tower and Anna Nagar East. And what’s more? The cycles are available for hire for as cheap as just one rupee for a half-an-hour ride and you don’t need to pay any security deposit too.

According to a Chennai

Metro Rail official, a com-pany called Zoomcar has started a pilot run at the three metro stations in the Anna Nagar neighbour-hood. “The company has installed around 50 bicy-cles – named PEDL cycles - at the three stations to help commuters of Metro Rail go to nearby places after their Metro ride. There is no need to pay any security deposit and commuters will be charged only one rupee for every 30 minutes,” the official said requesting anonymity. The initiative began some

weeks ago.Those wanting to hire

the bicycles have to log on to the website pedl.in and make a booking by scan-ning the QR code on the cycle using their Android or iPhone QR code scan-ners / readers to unlock the cycle and hire it.

According to a Zoom-car spokesperson, people can pay for the hire charg-es using the digital pay app Paytm. After a ride, the cycle can be parked at any of the PEDL locations in Anna Nagar.

Welcoming the move, Sudheer, who takes a Met-ro Rail from Vadapalani to Blue Star on a daily basis to head to his office and back says it is a con-cept that needs to be en-couraged. “People who

want to say get down at Thirumangalam and go to Anna Nagar West or some other place like say Shan-thi Colony can simply hire the cycle and pedal their way to their destination and back. It is not only environment friendly but also good for health,” he says.

“Cycling is the easiest mode to reach places around the Metro Rail sta-tions in Anna Nagar that are not connected by bus or share auto rickshaws. If you want to go to the inte-rior roads of Anna Nagar, then these cycles will be of great help considering that they come at a cost that is cheaper than the fares in the ordinary white board buses (which are a rarity),” adds Sudheer.

Wild growth of tall shrubs, dense bushes and trees on a vast stretch of land, which is partially compounded, has become a cause for concern for residents of Gem Park Avenue and Golden For-tune Apartment close to the Saibaba temple on Gangai Amman Nagar Road in Mogappair. The compound begins from the entry of Gem Park Avenue and ends a few hundred metres away along the Gangai Amman Nagar Road.

“This vast area is a pri-vate property belonging to some individual and has been left without any de-velopment for the past

many years. Whichever side you turn you can see only tall shrubs and dense bushes which have grown on their own. Most of these look like weeds. It gives you a feeling as if you are living in a locality which has hardly seen any inhabitation, though many houses are located here,” says Ramesh, a resident of Gem Park Avenue.

Some residents com-plain that the ground has also become an unofficial dump spot for people to throw garbage. “I have of-ten come across people stopping their two-wheel-ers and sometimes even cars and hurling polythene bags filled with household waste into the compound and then driving away. We

have not been able to do anything to prevent this since the private property is unguarded,” says a resi-dent of Golden Fortune Apartments that overlooks the compound.

A section of residents says that the compound has become home for rep-tiles and rodents. “We of-ten are confronted with rat menace in our locality and we believe these rodents find the vast open ground a safe place to hide. We keep struggling to trap them using traditional mouse traps and even rat stickers. Also during rainy seasons some residents have spotted snakes vanish right before their eyes into the bushes on the com-pound. Fortunately there

have been no cases of snake bites so far,” says Kamalam, a housewife residing in Gem Park Av-enue. At nights the place gives an eerie feeling, espe-cially after the street lights

are switched off. “Croak-ing frogs are not something that we are used to in the concrete jungle but here we get to hear them when all activity has stopped on the road after a spell of

rains,” she adds.“We would be happy if

the owner of the property deploys a bull dozer and clears up the wild growth inside the compound and upkeep it better,” she says.

eaT soy, nUTs, PUlses daily foR healThy heaRTReplacing one to two serv-

ings of animal proteins like meat and milk products with plant proteins such as soy, nuts and pulses daily could reduce main cholesterol markers and prevent your risk of heart dis-ease and stroke, finds a study.

The findings showed that one to two servings of plant proteins every day could reduce the main cholesterol markers low-density lipoprotein choles-terol -- LDL or “bad” choles-terol, non-high density lipopro-

tein cholesterol and apolipo-protein B -- by about 5 per cent.

“We are seeing a major inter-est in plant-based diets from Mediterranean to vege-tarian diets in the super-market and the clinic, and this comprehensive analysis of the highest level of evidence from randomized trials pro-vides us with more con-fidence that these diets are heart healthy,” says a study.

The health benefits could be even greater if people com-bined plant proteins with other cholesterol-lowering foods such

as viscous, water soluble fibres from oats, barley and psyllium, and plant sterols.

For the study, published in the Journal of the Amer-ican Heart Association, the team conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis of 112 randomised control trials in which people substi-tuted plant proteins for some animal proteins in their diets for at least three weeks.

According to a previous study, a diet high in animal protein is associated with a higher risk of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease, a condition in which fat builds up in the liver, in overweight people.

Long-term adherence to plant-based diet can lead to changes in body composition which help in reducing the cholesterol levels as well as help weight loss and lower blood pressure. Agencies

Madhavan says no to politics

Even as southern superstars Rajinikanth and Kamal Haasan have announced their entry into politics, actor R. Madhavan says he has no interest in foraying into the field. At the trailer launch of the Amazon Prime Original series “Breathe”, Madhavan was asked if he wants to get into politics.

He said: “I am not politically inclined and I do not want to be a politician. I am doing my service in acting and I am happy with it. The actor is currently excited about “Breathe”, an eight-episode psychological thriller that explores the lives of ordinary people faced with extraordinary circumstances. The story of “Breathe” also has an element of organ donation.

ilaiyaRaaja sings for ‘Maari 2’

Actor-filmmaker-singer Dhanush says he is thrilled that music-composer Ilaiyaraaja sang a song for the upcoming film “Maari 2”. Dhanush recently shared a string of photographs of himself along with maestro from the music studio. “So happy to announce that the maestro Isaignani Ilaiyaraaja sang a song for ‘Maari 2’. What a delightful divine experience. We feel so blessed and super thrilled,” Dhanush captioned the image.

Directed by Balaji Mohan, “Maari 2” also stars Sai Pallavi. The Tamil action-comedy film marks Balaji’s second collaboration with Dhanush after “Maari”. In “Maari”, Dhanush played a dhoti-clad, moustache-twirling local rowdy and he was paired with Kajal.

Rani Mukerji is set to perfectly juggle mother-hood and work as she chalks out two months to promote Hichki, a film she

believes in.She is an outstanding

actor. She is known to choose films that she be-lieves in. And interestingly, her movies happen to stand out of the pack and garner

box office success and rave reviews. Rani Mukerji is back! And she is back with a bang in Hichki - a film that promises to be a treat for audiences.

Rani plays the role of

Rani’s 60-day promotion marathon to become an acclaimed Hallmark TV film in 2008. Rani is extremely commit-ted to spread the word about Hichki, a film that she thoroughly believes in and has charted out an ag-gressive promotional cam-paign spanning over two months!

“Rani wants to juggle with motherhood and pro-fessional commitments equally as she feels both require her to give a 100 percent attention. She feels by spreading out the cam-paign for two months, she will be able to plan her work commitment and her motherhood commitments perfectly. Rani wants to take her film to audiences across the country and she feels that if Hichki is pro-moted in a traditional man-ner, which sees actors go

all guns blazing only in the last 15 days, she won’t be able to spend time with Adira and that’s not ok with Rani at all,” says a source.

Hichki is a script that convinced Rani to come back to acting. The source further adds, “Rani plans to participate in a slew of promotional activities across the nation. She will reach out to students, par-ents, teachers, children during promotions. The film focusses on turning disadvantages into oppor-tunities and staring down at challenges that life throws at one and ulti-mately winning over them. Rani wants to spreads the beautiful message of the film to as many audiences as possible.” YRF’s Hichki is set to release on Feb 23.

Going to the annual Chennai Book Fair has never

been as easy for many resi-dents in the Anna Nagar and Mogappair neighbour-hood with the availability of the Metro Rail service.

Ever since the venue of the Chennai Book Fair moved from the Quaid-E-Milleth Arts College for Women near Anna Salai to the St George’s Anglo In-dian Higher Secondary School opposite the Pa-chaiyappa’s College on EV Ramasamy (EVR) Salai, residents of this part of the neighbourhood have found accessibility a challenge. While the Quaid-E-Milleth college was connected by

both bus and share auto rickshaws, that has never been the case with the St George’s School.

“There are no direct bus services from Mogappair East and West or Anna Nagar to the venue of the Chennai Book Fair. Share auto rickshaws don’t ply via this route as well. Usually we had to go to the Anna Arch or Aminjikarai and take a connecting bus from there to the St George’s School. And the buses on that last mile connectivity were always crowded. So we had to depend on auto rickshaws, pointed out Srilalitha, a resident of Fifth Avenue in Anna Nagar. And the bus ser-vices in the return direction were poor.

Bookworms take a Metro ride to Chennai Book Fair

“Now that we have di-rect Metro Rail connectiv-ity from Thirumangalam it has made lives easier for us to go the Chennai Book Fair. The train stops right at the underground station r ight outs ide the St George’s School. And for the return journey we just need to go to the opposite side and take a Metro Rail

from Pachaiyappa’s Col-lege,” she added.

The Chennai Book Fair, which got underway on Wednesday last (January 10) is on until January 22. “During Pongal we can’t imagine driving on the EVR Salai. Also meander-ing through the main gate of the St George’s School and find a parking spot for

our cars on holidays when there is huge crowd is such a pain,” said Saikumar, a bookworm and college student who resides in an apartment on the 12th Main Road.

Residents in Mogappair can reach the Thiruman-galam Metro Rail Station by share auto rickshaw or bus. However there is one

concern. “Tickets on the Metro Rail are on the high-er side. So as a family of five if we want to go to the Book Fair by Metro train then we end up spending almost the same amount as we would be on a call taxi. But one advantage is the call taxis could charge us surge pricing on holidays which won’t be the case with Metro Rail,” said Aravindaskhan, a father of three children.
