Organisation of Work

Media Studies is a discipline whereby the basics of what you need to know will be provided in class but the depth of understanding required to achieve well needs to come through your involvement in the subject. That means that you need to become involved in the media, critically analysing how the media is presented, what is being left out, who is making the media, how media is marketed……indeed the aim of the course is to really empower you with the tools to be a critical reader of media products and to make you aware of the way the media works on the audience.

Keeping a Blog

Your blog is a record of your work and reflections during this Media Studies course. The content of the set activities will relate to current topics and assessments. Whilst your blog is not assessed as such in terms of Achievement Standards, the more that you put into your blogs the more you will benefit in the final assessments. The depth of research, thought and collection of related materials will be of huge benefit in terms of the depth of your responses. Excellence will be awarded for students who have the ability to think outside the square and apply concepts in a multitude of areas.

You should also make extra entries in response to work discussed in class and related areas of study. You may also follow up particular interests: reviews of films and TV programmes, analysis of the techniques used in particular media texts, cuttings and reflections from news items about the media, research into particular issues or media personalities, comments on why a particular static image is so successful, reviews of websites etc.

NB Date each entry and note the source of any links, videos, articles, websites, or information.

Your blog is also a record of your technology use during the production aspect of the course. A log will be kept of the plan, design and production work you do while creating a TV commercial. Chart your use of technology and your increasing proficiency for 1.6 (internal assessment).

2 1.2 Close Reading – ‘As Scene in the Movies!’

Set up your own blog on Weebly

1. Go to www.weebly.com

2. Enter your name, email address and choose a password, then click ‘Sign Up’.3. Choose a name for your website – the ‘Type’ can be ‘Education’ and ‘Category’ can be ‘Student’

4. Choose a ‘SUB-DOMAIN’ – the top option, and put in your website address – which will be www._______.weebly.com - the screen will show you if your name is available or not.

7

Page 8: MACLEANS COLLEGE - Miss Thompson Mediamissthompsonmedia.weebly.com/.../2/3/1/4231685/level_1_course…  · Web viewAssessment procedures for Media Studies are directly in line with

Scroll down the screen and press the orange ‘CONTINUE’ button. This will take you to your basic web home page.

5. You are now ready to customise your home page. Use the ‘ELEMENTS’ tab along the top to drag

down a pic / paragraph combination – and even ‘EDIT’ a picture – put in your own pictures.

6. Always ‘PUBLISH’ your work – get into the habit of doing this regularly so you don’t lose any work.

7. This screen will always pop up whenever you ‘PUBLISH’ your site – just scroll down a little bit and click ‘CONTINUE’.

8. You are automatically given a ‘HOME’ page for your new website – but you can add pages / blogs from here the “PAGES” tab.

8

Page 9: MACLEANS COLLEGE - Miss Thompson Mediamissthompsonmedia.weebly.com/.../2/3/1/4231685/level_1_course…  · Web viewAssessment procedures for Media Studies are directly in line with

9. Once you have set up your PAGES, you could add a BLOG to each page – drag the BLOG alongside the page and this will attach the blog to that page rather than having a whole new tab for that blog. Remember to save your settings. Now you can write blog comments and upload your own pictures, videos and links to your pages and blogs. Click the ‘DESIGN’ tab to choose from different layout and colour options. When you have finished with the ‘WEEBLY EDITOR’, simply save and ‘PUBLISH’ your work, then click the ‘CLOSE’ tab at the top right hand side of the screen. Closing the ‘WEEBLY EDITOR’ will take you to the screen shown below.

9

Page 10: MACLEANS COLLEGE - Miss Thompson Mediamissthompsonmedia.weebly.com/.../2/3/1/4231685/level_1_course…  · Web viewAssessment procedures for Media Studies are directly in line with

10. To Edit your website – click ‘EDIT’’ and then go to the tab at the top ‘PAGES’ – this is where you can ‘ADD PAGE’ or ‘ADD BLOG’. I suggest that you have a ‘PAGE’ for each of your Achievement Standards. For example in Level 1 Media you could have 6 pages (1.1 Media Consumption; 1.2 Close Reading; 1.3 Media Event; 1.4 Genre Study; 1.5 Design and Plan; 1.6 Film Project). To each page you can add a ‘BLOG’ and keep track of what you are learning, what assessments are coming up and you can complete the homework and other tasks set by your teacher.

11. To exit and log out – just click on ‘CLOSE’ at the top right hand corner of the WEEBLY EDITOR SCREEN and you will be directed to the screen above – “MY SITES”. From here you can LOG OUT – and when you log back in (by going to www.weebly.com ) you will see this screen first too.

BLOGGING BASICS – 3 INTERFACES

1. Account Site – this is the page you will see when logging IN or OUT of Weebly. You can also check your ‘Statistics’ which will show you how many visitors or page views you have had.

2. Weebly Editor – this is the page you will see when you want to add a blog or page – or add to a page or do any blogging – upload pictures, embed youtube clips, add links. You must always click on tabs such as ‘SAVE TO LIVE’ and “PUBLISH” – double check you have published every page you are editing, otherwise no one will be able to see or read your blogs.

3. Website – this will be what visitors (such as your teacher and other students) will see – we will put your URL (or domain name) into the internet browser and look through pages and blogs.

You and the MediaBlog Task A

Task A

In order to identify clearly who you are and how you interact with the media you should complete the following over the first few weeks of the term. Answer as fully as possible and put some thought into your responses.

Part 1 - Profile

Begin by completing a Media Profile Sheet over the course of one full week. It is a good idea to fill in the chart at least once a day so that you get an accurate picture of your media consumption. The ‘Involvement’ category requires just an ‘F’ for full concentration or ‘H’ for half involvement. Use refill pages in your folder and file under ‘1.1 Media Consumption’

Once you have completed the profile you can go on to complete the following tasks by blog.

1. On one-page upload a photo of yourself or a series of symbols that represent who you are. Then around the image place all the information about yourself that you can. Some of the details you could include are: gender, age, sports, hobbies, interests, friends, employment. social groups, cultural background, educational history, religion, family, pets, holidays, entertainment, music, clothing , clubs, shops you frequent…and anything else of interest that makes you who you are.

2. Using the information gathered on your Media Profile Sheet calculate the amount of time you spend consuming media in a week and then analyse the other information that you have recorded. Try to display at least three different aspects of your viewing habits from the information you have gathered. Visually display your information using appropriate graphs eg pie, pictograms, bar diagrams. Alternatively, you could upload a vlog (video log) of you explaining these things.

3. Now identify the Media Audiences that you belong to (they may not necessarily be evident from the profile that you have taken for one week) eg Shortland Street fan, Horror Film enthusiast, Listener of ZMFM….

4. Finally write down at least two consumption patterns that have surprised you in some way from your profile.

What would you like to change about your consumption patterns this year?

11
