Macmillan Cancer Support began their two-year partnership with Fujitsu in November 2016 with the ambition of helping even more people living with cancer. Since then, we have gone on to accomplish a tremendous amount together and achieved successes which will continue to have a lasting legacy for both Macmillan and Fujitsu.

As a technology partner, Fujitsu was uniquely placed to help Macmillan’s ambition of reaching more people who need their support through digital avenues. Together, we utilised Fujitsu’s digital skills and expertise to assist on a variety of charity projects which have gone on to transform the Macmillan experience for patients, fundraisers and volunteers.

A key aspect of this has been the Volunteering Platform project. This saw Fujitsu employ their digital skills to build a new Volunteering Management System for Macmillan which will vastly improve the journey to meet the needs of Macmillan volunteers.

Alongside Fujitsu’s pro-bono support, engagement in the partnership from colleagues across the business has been consistently high, with involvement from all seniority levels showing the highest level of commitment to responsible business.

Over the last two years, Fujitsu has supported Macmillan Cancer Support through fundraising, volunteering and donating time, skills and benefits in kind. We are thrilled to announce that the overall value of the partnership is a staggering £971,593. This funding will enable Macmillan to help everyone living with cancer, live life as fully as they can by providing physical, financial and emotional support.

Of the total value of the partnership, £200,390 is down to fundraising by employees , beating the target of £200,000. Fujitsu employees have also supported the charity by engaging in volunteering opportunities such as cheering and e-campaigning, as well as mutually beneficial opportunities such as skill sharing, a new mentoring scheme and care packages.

Partnership overview

“Being a responsible business is at the heart of Fujitsu’s strategy. We are delighted that we have been able to deploy our technology expertise to create a lasting legacy for Macmillan; we are particularly proud of technology innovations such as contactless giving, which have genuinely transformed the way people donate to charity.” Juliet Silvester, Head of Responsible Business, Fujitsu

“Fujitsu has been a fantastic partnership for Macmillan, bringing in their expertise across numerous transformative projects. The work on Macmillan’s Volunteer Journey is a pioneering project on D365 which aligns with our Technology strategy and how this can lead to other development areas such as Support Line Services and Grants. I am particularly proud of the work we’ve done to create the 360-video to tap into a new way to help people living with cancer.” Declan Hunt, Executive Director of Technology, Macmillan Cancer Support

Top highlights from our partnershipFundraising

Over the course of the partnership, Fujitsu employees have taken on a variety of fundraising activities in support of Macmillan. Alongside offering their services to enhance the charity digitally, Fujitsu’s commitment to fundraising has raised funds which will go on to inspire great change for those living with cancer. From Coffee Mornings, to summer fete fundraisers, locking up bosses and hosting pub quizzes, Fujitsu’s phenomenal efforts have been greatly appreciated.

Fujitsu and Macmillan Cancer Support have raised £200,390 across the two-year partnership, a real testament to the commitment and engagement of Fujitsu employees across the business. This amount could fund one Macmillan nurse for over 3 years, helping people living with cancer and their families receive essential physical, financial and emotional support.

Fujitsu’s charity champion network has gone to great lengths to raise vital funds for Macmillan. They have led the organisation of events and rallied up support from their colleagues, a pivotal role in the success of our partnership’s fundraising.

Fundraising Highlights ■ In 2016, 515 members of staff took part in the first fundraising event for Macmillan: the ‘Give a Gift’ campaign. By donating an hour’s wage, Fujitsu employees raised a staggering £17,000.

■ From 2 summer fundraising events across the 2 years, ‘5k My Way’ and ‘Fun in the Sun’, we raised a total of £30,000.

■ World’s Biggest Coffee Morning was the first fundraising event to be carried out by all sites across UK & Ireland, raising a total of £18,000 across the two annual events.

■ 4 members of the senior leadership team took part in the ‘Lock up your Boss’ event in London and Bracknell, raising over £4,000 in sponsorship and donations.

“I am so proud to have been a Macmillan Champion over these last two years. We have helped the charity with so many amazing things such as raising money, creating the contactless payments system, and by helping to get the volunteering portal working better. I feel very privileged to have seen behind the scenes at Macmillan and to have met some incredible people who have been helped by the charity.” Tina Gillett, Charity Champion

5k My WayA highlight of Fujitsu’s employee engagement has been the 5k My Way events, which saw more than 500 Fujitsu colleagues participate across the UK in 2017. They did this by taking on the 5km route in any way they wanted – walking, jogging, running, skipping and even taking part in fancy dress!

The 5k events took place in Belfast, Bracknell, Derry, Manchester, Wakefield and Warrington in 2017 with Derry and Belfast taking on the event again in 2018 as part of the ‘Fun in the Sun’ series. In the second year, employees were encouraged to think of creative ways to tackle the 5k, making it an inclusive event for those who weren’t keen runners. These one-day fundraisers were hugely impactful and raised over £25,000 for Macmillan Cancer Support across the two years.

World’s Biggest Coffee MorningIn September 2017, we launched the World’s Biggest Coffee Morning fundraiser with Fujitsu colleagues across UK & Ireland which proved hugely successful. This was repeated in 2018 but this time, across every Fujitsu sites. This was a huge achievement for both the business and Macmillan as it was the first fundraising event to take place at all locations.

With coffee and cakes filling the offices on this staple fundraising day in September, this became one of the most effective fundraising events of our partnership, totalling an amazing £18,000 across the two years.

Fun in the Sun One of the most innovative fundraisers of the partnership were the ‘Fun in the Sun’ events, which ran across six different sites in the summer months of 2018. While the Belfast and Derry sites repeated the ever-successful 5k My Way event, other sites held their own summer fête style fundraisers. With local supplier stalls, BBQs, sports games and inflatable challenges, the events enabled colleagues from across the business to come together and enjoy the sunshine whilst raising vital funds for Macmillan.

The days proved to be a great way of engaging Fujitsu staff at all levels. Over 50 Fujitsu employees volunteered at the events and we also had a number of guest speakers on site to help promote the fundraising. This included the mayor of Bracknell and further commentary throughout the day from various senior stakeholders from both Fujitsu and Macmillan. The events made a great contribution to Fujitsu’s fundraising, collectively bringing in £5,000.

Fujitsu and Macmillan Cancer Support were presented the silver award for ‘Best pro-bono work for a charitable, social or ethical cause’ at The Corporate Engagement Awards 2019. The awards recognises the most successful and innovative corporate partnerships and sponsorships, and the communication strategies around those collaborations.

Junior Talent GroupsThe Industrial Placement students (IPs), Graduate and Apprentice groups have also provided significant support to the partnership by raising funds through a range of different fundraising activities. In 2017, the Fujitsu IPs took part in the Paperclip Challenge, which involved exchanging a paperclip for items or activities of a higher value. The activity culminated with an auction of the final items with the funds being donated to Macmillan. In addition to the fundraising element, the challenge was mutually beneficial to Fujitsu, giving the IPs the opportunity to develop their project management, negotiation and networking skills.

The teams of Apprentices also supported Macmillan by taking part in the £1 fundraising challenge. The aim of the challenge was for the apprentices to raise as much money as possible by investing the initial £1 they were given. They came up with a variety of forward-thinking fundraising ideas, which they presented back to a panel of judges including a Macmillan representative. The challenge also enabled the apprentices to engage with senior stakeholders in the business as well as developing their strategic thinking and teamwork skills. The Junior Talent groups were extremely engaged and collectively raised a phenomenal £25,000 including matched funding from Fujitsu.

In addition, Fujitsu Graduates came together in groups to donate their time and skills to develop ideas around how Macmillan could better engage and retain their corporate partners and challenge events participants. The value of this support was fantastic and the winning team’s ideas (selected by Macmillan) has influenced how we work with challenge events with the intention of implementing them in future projects.

Fujitsu employees have been truly dedicated in helping make a difference to the lives of those living with cancer, which is exemplified in their commitment to a variety of volunteering opportunities. The nature of the practical and digital support that Fujitsu have provided Macmillan has been wide-ranging and helped to make a real impact, with staff donating 5,552 hours of their time to volunteering. These have ranged from on-the-ground support such as cheering at events and e-campaigning, to volunteering their time and skills by conducting a new mentoring scheme, carrying out skill shares with Macmillan employees and creating care packages to be delivered to cancer patients at local hospitals. The support of Fujitsu colleagues has been invaluable and enabled Macmillan to get closer to their ambition of reaching everyone living with cancer.

Christmas Care PackagesOver the Christmas period, Fujitsu staff from the across the business sourced items and donated gifts to be put inside Christmas Care Packages. Volunteers from Fujitsu then spent time packaging and delivering them to different Macmillan Information Centres. In total, 155 patients who were experiencing hardship and feeling particularly vulnerable during the Christmas period, benefitted from the generosity of Fujitsu staff. This opportunity really helped bring the cause to life and reiterates the positive impact of our partnership. It was a fantastic volunteering project, which received great feedback from both volunteers and care package recipients.

Diversity & Inclusion NetworksOver the course of the partnership, Macmillan worked closely with Fujitsu’s Diversity and Inclusion (D&I) Networks. As organisations both committed to developing and nurturing a diverse and inclusive workforce, the knowledge and experience shared meant both benefited greatly. Macmillan worked closely with Shine, Fujitsu’s LGBT network, and SEED, their disability network, to carry out mutually beneficial activities and projects. The resource and support provided to one another has been invaluable and will stand as a great legacy of the partnership. The highlights included:

■ Macmillan’s Safeguarding team presented at Fujitsu’s Shine conference about Macmillan’s D&I plans for the future. The team’s intern also shadowed Fujitsu’s D&I department to understand how they built their networks.

■ Macmillan colleagues attended Fujitsu’s digital inclusion conference to learn more about the topic and raise awareness of the partnership by running a raffle. This was a great cross-organisational networking and fundraising opportunity.

■ Fujitsu invited Macmillan to join their table at the British LGBT awards.

■ 10 Fujitsu volunteers marched alongside Macmillan staff and volunteers at Brighton Pride. This had a value to Macmillan of £850 and received great feedback from all volunteers involved.

MISS Bus VisitOne of the key objectives of our partnership was to raise awareness of the many services that Macmillan can offer, be that physical, emotional or financial support, and ensure that these are easily accessible to Fujitsu employees. One of the ways we did this was by organising for one of Macmillan’s MISS (Mobile Information and Support Services) buses to visit the Bracknell office for the day. The MISS team provide free face-to-face support for anyone affected by cancer and are made up of a range of trained professionals from radiographers, dietitians, nurses and financial experts.

“The hampers are beautiful… thank you so much… they were all gratefully received, we had tears and feelings of ‘there is someone more deserving than me’. The patients were so humbled that somebody was thinking of them and could not believe the content of the hampers.” Julie Bliss, University Hospital Coventry

With no appointment necessary, Fujitsu staff were invited to come and talk to Macmillan’s friendly specialists on board if they had any questions about cancer or would like someone to talk to confidentially. On the day, the MISS team spoke to a number of Fujitsu colleagues who utilised the free support, covering a range of topics from diagnosis, to treatment, to local support. It was a fantastic opportunity for Macmillan and Fujitsu to raise awareness of the partnership whilst also offering easily accessible support to anyone affected by cancer.

Party ConferencesFujitsu also provided Macmillan with the invaluable opportunity of hosting a Macmillan takeover in the business lounges at the Labour and Conservative Party Conferences, which they sponsor. With a value of £58,000, this was a great opportunity to build relationships and engage top-level politicians from all parties to help raise the profile of Macmillan and the issues affecting people living with cancer. The takeovers were a huge success and we had engagement with nearly 70 MPs over both conferences, including Theresa May and Shadow Chancellor John McDonnell.

Mentoring SchemeWe launched a mentoring scheme in October 2017 where we saw a gap in Macmillan for a mentorship programme. Fujitsu staff were matched with Macmillan mentees, specifically looking at those in project management with 10 matches over a 6-month period.

This was a fantastic scheme to share experiences from two organisations, to discuss benefits management and opportunities to seek advice on challenges with mentors. Mentors also benefitted from this, finding it a fulfilling experience and gaining interesting insight to Macmillan Cancer Support.

One mentor from Fujitsu said, “It has been a very rewarding experience, working outside of the IT services area that I have worked in now for several years.”

Skill sharesWe also created 14 skill shares matches, a way for Fujitsu to share expertise with Macmillan whether that was through a phone conversation or a team session. This type of volunteering is vital in helping Macmillan become an even more skilled workforce which in turn enables them to reach more people living with cancer. Skill shares brought in expertise and shared learning across a number of areas such as retention, new starters, agile working, communication through Skype and more.

One skill share was between Macmillan’s Head of Portfolio Management Office & Fujitsu’s Head of Business Management & Sales Engagement and Head of Business Performance and Optimisation, who had a half day workshop. Following on from the Fujitsu Mentoring Programme and Macmillan’s agreed new corporate strategy, the Portfolio Management team were keen to learn from Fujitsu through a presentation, storytelling, key findings and an open discussion points. This was attended by senior members of Macmillan’s Planning, Performance and Change team who said, “Fujitsu were very generous with their time and in sharing their insights, and we found it enormously helpful. The scenarios they discussed really brought it to life for us and gave us plenty of food for thought.”

Pro-bono support

Our partnership together has been a great success across fundraising and volunteering but none more so than the pro-bono projects that have and will continue to create huge impact for supporters, volunteers and people living with cancer. There have been three key pro-bono projects we worked on over the two years.

Contactless givingFujitsu provided pro-bono support through the development of a prototype for contactless giving. There is an increasing need for charities to develop digital ways of giving and this helps Macmillan to mitigate the risks of a cashless society and create that introduction into contactless giving.

Fujitsu used an online digital platform, through their ‘Activ8’ team, to crowd source ideas from fundraisers and experts to look at how this will look. Together we piloted foam hands and buckets to test contactless giving at the World Tour 2017, which has in turn evolved into 12 contactless machines, making it easy for people on the street to give.

This allowed us to build on the success of the pilot to trial these 12 devices and in turn raised over £60,000 in card donations and allow Macmillan as an organisation to develop this further and continue to use contactless as a way for the UK public to donate.

360-degree videoFor the Fujitsu World Tour 2018 event, there was another opportunity to co-create a solution for Macmillan with Fujitsu’s ‘Activ8’ team. An innovative 360-degree video pilot was created to create an immersive experience for head and neck cancer radiotherapy treatment. This type of cancer was chosen as it is an area which has potential to create more resource to help those going through new diagnosis.

This project directly helped people living with cancer with positive feedback from head and neck cancer specialists and patients and has now been integrated as part of training as well as showing to newly diagnosed patients at various hospitals. This also upskilled our video production team to create further 360-degree videos.

“The 360-degree video is a great piece of work and collaboration across divisions. It shows the power of working together with our partners to develop products and information/support services which help to transform the lives of people living with cancer. I encourage everyone to view the video.” Natasha Parker, Head of Corporate Partnerships

This video has been shortlisted in the Charity Film Awards 2019 and we have received great engagement across the sector on the creation of this video.

Summary

Our partnership together has accomplished an incredible amount together across fundraising, volunteering and pro bono activities. Over 2 years, we have helped even more people living with cancer to live life as fully as they can and have created a lasting legacy of Fujitsu’s work.

“The partnership with Fujitsu has been incredibly successful. Fujitsu’s digital skills and expertise have brought unique added value to the charity and goes beyond cash value; the outcomes delivered in bringing Macmillan into the digital world have allowed us to reach more people who need our support.” Nicola Keith, Head of Partnership Management, Macmillan

Volunteering Management SystemWe worked together since the start of the partnership to ensure that we can create a service to support Macmillan volunteers, who are vital to making sure that Macmillan can reach everyone to provide support. Our ambition is to create a single technology platform which revolutionises how volunteers give their time via Macmillan.

Our solution is three key areas: a mobile app for volunteers, an instance of CRM to manage the data, and an enhanced volunteer recruitment webpage. Our work on this over the past 2 years have created the foundation for this and will create a lasting legacy of Fujitsu’s co-creation work for Macmillan with a product reaching 25,000+ users. With over £349,000 of pro-bono support being donated to this programme, this will create a transformative change for volunteers, volunteer managers and Macmillan staff.

This project will create multiple benefits including:

■ A new ability for volunteer-data to be collected in one central place improving Macmillan’s insight and single view of our supporters

■ A fully joined up and integrated system that will provide an improved experience for volunteers, with greater ease of access across multiple devices

■ Standardisation of operational processes bringing consistency within all Macmillan services across the UK

■ Pioneering project on D365 aligns with Technology’s CRM strategy

■ Ensured compliance with best practices, data protection and security

■ A lasting legacy of Fujitsu’s co-creation work for Macmillan.
