University of Colorado Colorado Springs (UCCS) police officer Garrett Swasey,who was killed when a gunman stormed a Planned Parenthood abortion clinicin Colorado Spring.
Police have arrested a man accused of opening fire at a Planned Parenthood facility in ColoradoSprings and causing a standoff that lasted several hours on Friday.
At least three people, including one police officer, have died. Nine more people, including fiveofficers among them, were injured, but are in good condition, according to Colorado SpringsPolice.
The officer who died is Garrett Swasey, 44, of the University of Colorado, Colorado Springspolice department.
State and federal law enforcement officials responded to an active shooter situation at the PlannedParenthood building early Friday afternoon.
Colorado Springs Police Lieutenant Catherine Buckley said the gunman first opened fire at thePlanned Parenthood building, adding that authorities had been trying to evacuate people from thearea over the course of the hourslong standoff.
Buckley said the gunman also "brought some bags with him into the building," but it was unclearwhat was in the bags.
Police said the suspected shooter was carrying a "long gun."
A witness told The Associated Press that she heard up to 20 shots fired in a span of 5 minutes.Another witness told The Washington Post that she heard “a lot of gunshots, too many to evencount" beginning around 11:45 am local time.

CNN reported that the ATF and the FBI are helping local police investigate the shooting.
Joan Motolinia said his sister, Jennifer, called him while she was hiding behind a table inside aColorado Planned Parenthood clinic as a gunman was shooting inside the building, according toThe Associated Press. "She was telling me to take care of her babies because she could getkilled," Motolinia said of the mother of three.
The Southern Poverty Law Center reported in October that Planned Parenthood clinics around thecountry had been subject to at least 4 firebombing attacks in just over two months.

The attacks have come in the wake of a series of videos released over the summer purporting toshow a Planned Parenthood employee discussing the organization's practice of using tissue fromaborted fetuses for scientific research.
The videos, which Planned Parenthood said were heavily edited, led to calls for the organizationto be defunded by the US government.
Planned Parenthood Rocky Mountains President and CEO Vicki Cowart said in a statement, "Atthis time, our concern is for the safety of our patients, staff and law enforcement."
Though Cowart stressed that the organization was still learning the details of the incident, shesaid Planned Parenthood shares “the concerns of many Americans that extremists are creating apoisonous environment."
Cowart continued, "We will never back away from providing care in a safe, supportiveenvironment that millions of people rely on and trust."

Planned Parenthood reportedly has "strong security measures in place," including what has beendescribed as a "safe room" at the Colorado Springs facility, according to CNN.
President Barack Obama has been briefed about the situation by Homeland Security Advisor LisaMonaco, a White House official said.
Friday's shooting comes less than a month after three people were killed by a gunman in ColoradoSprings. The gunman was ultimately neutralized in a shootout with police.
Colorado Springs has a population of about 445,000 and is located at the base of Pike's Peak. It ishome to the US Air Force Academy.
