Made Onsite Explorations from Angels Gate Community Classes
Made Onsite explores the rich body of work developed by the artists of Angels Gate Cultural Center’s community classes. These classes have been ongoing for the past twenty years with the goal of bringing together artists of different backgrounds, ages, and practices. Ranging in media from ceramics, collage, painting, and drawing, this exhibition showcases the breadth of art developed through both instructor-led classes and workshops. The figurative artists exhibited take the classical representation of the body and make it their own through various methods. While some artists choose to completely abstract the body and use stunning, yet unnatural colors, others use collage or more gestural mark-making in order to enhance their work. Some ceramicists emphasize graphic shapes and interesting textures and colors in their work, while others take more traditional approaches. Other ceramicists paint intricate designs or narrations on traditional forms, or they use pattern and organic inlays to decorate functional ware. And finally, some artists are inspired by the diverse locations within San Pedro from its industrial ports to its natural landscapes and flora. AGCC’s community classes foster an environment of creativity and exchange, facilitating the growth of the San Pedro artist community. In addition to the visual art classes exhibited, the center hosts music, dance, archery, meditation, yoga, performance and printmaking in youth and adult classes. Angels Gate Cultural Center, is located on the grounds of 1940’s era Army barracks of Angels Gate Park in San Pedro, California and is a community focused, nonprofit arts organization. AGCC provides the Los Angeles Harbor Region with a year-round schedule of gallery exhibitions and community classes and provides art studio space for 52 local artists.
