erudite feature but equally accessible to the general population. It is regulated and lays

on certain principles such as universality, plurality and impartiality, always respecting

different points of view that can be scientific, philosophical, political, cultural or

through lifetime makes the Regional Public Library a precious instrument of info-

inclusion, literacy and cultural development of individuals and of society as a whole.

With a great variety of cultural offers, it can simultaneously be a pleasant and attractive

The Museum’s collection of Portuguese contemporary art is mainly made up of works acquired from art galleries or the artists themselves, and added to this core collection are donations from the exhibitions of the former Gallery of the Regional Secretariat of Tourism and Culture and from private donors, such as Ana Hatherly, Pedro Valdez Cardoso, Albuquerque Mendes, Sofia Areal, among others. In October 2015, this institution was transferred to the Casa das Mudas Arts Centre in Calheta, a project of the architect Paulo David that was inaugurated in October 2004, having been built on the former property of the Casa das Mudas. Quinta das Cruzes is one of the largest “quintas“ with historic tradition in the bay of Funchal, linked to the family of the first Donatory Captain, who have worked in the late fifteenth, early sixteenth century. A small building, started by Joao Goncalves Zarco (1425-1467?), was increased by his son João Gonçalves da Câmara. This house remained in the family until the mid seventeenth century, moving through marriage alliances, to the Lomelino family until the late nineteenth century.
